A Russian-installed official said on Sunday that Ukraine had taken control of the village, Piatykhatky, in the southern Zaporizhzhia region. Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said Ukrainian forces had not only retaken Piatykhatky but had advanced by up to seven km (4.3 miles) into Russian lines in two weeks, capturing 113 square km (44 square miles) of land. The reported capture of the villages reflects incremental gains for Ukraine that highlight the challenge of breaking through lines Moscow has spent months strengthening. Russia says it invaded Ukraine to "denazify" it, an argument Ukraine and its Western allies call a pretext for a land grab. While Ukraine conducts what Western governments and analysts say are probing attacks to test Russian forces, officials from two NATO member states said Moscow is redeploying some of its forces as it seeks to predict where Ukraine will strike.

Russia claimed victory over Bakhmut after a monthlong battle over the eastern Ukrainian city. On Sunday, Russia's defense ministry backed a claim first made by the head of the Wagner paramilitary group, Prigozhin, that Russian forces have seized Bakhmut. "Their capture does not grant Russian forces operationally significant terrain to continue conducting offensive operations or any particularly strong position from which to defend against possible Ukrainian counterattacks." The battle in Bakhmut has also, at times, put the Wagner leader at odds with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "Russian forces will likely need additional reinforcements to hold Bakhmut City and its flanks at the expense of operations in other directions," ISW reported.

The Sudanese air force is conducting operations against the RSF, the army said. Footage from broadcasters showed a military aircraft in the sky above Khartoum, but Reuters could not independently confirm the material. A Reuters journalist saw cannon and armoured vehicles deployed in streets, and heard heavy weapons fire near the headquarters of both the army and RSF. The RSF, which analysts say is 100,000 strong, said its forces were attacked first by the army. Civilian political parties that had signed an initial power-sharing deal with the army and the RSF called on them to cease hostilities.
"These movements and deployments happened without the agreement of the leadership of the armed forces or even coordination with it," the army spokesman said. Deputy head of Sudan's sovereign council General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo speaks during a press conference at Rapid Support Forces head quarter in Khartoum, Sudan February 19, 2023. Witnesses told Reuters that they saw a convoy of RSF vehicles including armoured trucks enter Khartoum on Thursday. Political figures issued statements on Thursday about attempts to mediate between the RSF and army high command. Hemedti, who has amassed considerable wealth and expanded domestic and foreign relations, has said repeatedly in speeches that he wants no confrontation with the army.

March 24 (Reuters) - Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) is redeploying employees in wealth management and lending to other roles within the company, a source familiar with the matter said on Friday, as higher interest rates continue to weigh on the businesses. Less than 200 employees are being moved to product specialist positions within the company's global operations organization, the source told Reuters. Based on current market conditions, we are re-aligning talent to support these areas," a Bank of America spokesperson said. The move highlights the broader weakness in Wall Street banks' mortgage and wealth management businesses in a rising interest rate environment. Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) slashed hundreds of jobs in its mortgage business across the U.S., Bloomberg News reported in December.
In an exclusive interview with Reuters, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon added new fuel to a growing debate over how South Korea should arm itself as the North races to perfect its capability to strike the South with tactical nuclear weapons. "North Korea has nearly succeeded in miniaturising and lightening tactical nuclear weapons and secured at least dozens of warheads," Oh said. Oh, an influential member of President Yoon Suk Yeol's conservative People Power Party, is one of the highest-profile officials to actively advocate for a South Korean nuclear weapons programme. He dismissed opponents who warned of punishments from other countries, including sanctions, saying a South Korean nuclear programme would send a message to countries like China to curb the North's military buildup. "If North Korea’s nuclear threat becomes more visible and South Korea takes its own path to nuclear development, it will signal the start of a nuclear domino effect in Asia."
AWS HR VP Ian Wilson said Amazon is looking for ways to rehire some of the laid off employees. Amazon laid off over 18,000 employees in January. Amazon slashed over 18,000 jobs in January to deal with slowing growth and a volatile economy. Some of those laid off employees may soon get a call to return to the company. Wilson said re-staffing laid off employees has been "top of mind" for him, but it's been difficult because of Amazon's recent hiring freeze.

a hedge fund recruiter said, commenting on the calculus for hedge fund investors. At the end of 2021, the fund's exposure had been evenly split between fixed-income and equities, according to the investor documents. In all, more than 60 portfolio managers departed or were let go in 2022, according to the investor documents and people close to the matter. After the shakeup, ExodusPoint's income stream is now even more reliant on fixed-income trading — and that may not be such a bad thing. "The fixed income piece is doing incredibly well," another hedge fund recruiter said.
Ukrainian military leaders have said they need hundreds of the tanks to break through Russian defenses. Germany has more than 300 active Leopard tanks and more in storage. Several countries use Leopard tanks, including Canada, the Netherlands and Sweden. “The question is whether 100 tanks of different varieties will be enough to eject Russian forces from Ukraine. The deployment of Leopard tanks was the most significant, he said, because of its conventional diesel-powered engine, as opposed to the Abrams tanks, which are powered by jet fuel.

Here are the characteristics of tactical nuclear weapons and why they have drawn so much attention. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterWHAT IS A TACTICAL NUCLEAR WEAPON? Tactical nuclear weapons are often characterized by their size, their range, or their use for limited military targets. Russia has 1,000 to 2,000 warheads for non-strategic nuclear weapons in its arsenal, the CRS report says. "I don't think there's any such thing as the ability to easily (use) a tactical nuclear weapon and not end up with Armageddon," he said last week.
SEOUL, Oct 11 (Reuters) - South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said on Tuesday that North Korea has nothing to gain from nuclear weapons, as the isolated country threatened to beef up its capability to attack its southern neighbour. "North Korea is consistently developing and upgrading its nuclear weapons and posing nuclear threats to not only our Republic of Korea but the world," Yoon told reporters, referring to South Korea by its official name. "I believe it has nothing to gain from nuclear weapons." North Korea's increasingly explicit nuclear threats has fanned a furore in Seoul, with some politicians and scholars calling for redeploying U.S. tactical nuclear weapons. The chief of South Korea's progressive main opposition has accused Yoon of pursuing a "pro-Japan defence policy" which he said might end up stationing Japanese military forces in South Korea.
The outages may only provide a momentary reprieve for oil prices, said Bob Yawger of Mizuho in New York. After shutting some its offshore crude production, BP Plc (BP.L) said the storm didn't pose a threat to its Gulf of Mexico assets and it was redeploying workers to oil platforms. "Oil is currently under the influence of financial forces," said Tamas Varga of oil broker PVM. Iraq's oil minister on Monday said the group was monitoring prices and did not want a sharp increase or a collapse. U.S. crude oil in storage rose by about 4.2 million barrels for the week ended Sept. 23, according to market sources citing American Petroleum Institute figures on Tuesday.
