Trucks carrying industrial equipments wait because of the closure of the border after the coup in Gabon, in the border town of Kye-Ossi, Cameroon August 31, 2023. The officers placed Bongo under house arrest and installed Nguema as head of state, ending the Bongo family's 56-year hold on power. "Going as quickly as possible does not mean organising ad hoc elections, where we will end up with the same errors," he said. Gabon's election commission said after the election that Bongo had been re-elected with 64% of the vote, while Ondo Ossa secured almost 31%. It said it will impose sanctions on the coup leaders if they do not restore constitutional order.

The incident raised fresh questions among Republican and Democratic members of Congress about some of their aging colleagues. After being approached by a second person, McConnell resumed speaking but needed reporters' questions repeated to him and only answered two more questions. A McConnell aide said the senator would be consulting with a physician prior to his next public event. McConnell froze on Wednesday after being asked whether he intended to run again in 2026, when his six-year term is up. Southwest Airlines said Friday that it has reached a tentative agreement with the union representing its mechanics, aircraft inspectors, maintenance controllers and training instructors. "Our Mechanics & Related Employees work around the clock to safely maintain our aircraft, and we reached a Tentative Agreement that rewards them and helps Southwest maintain an efficient operation," Adam Carlisle, vice president of labor relations at Southwest, said in a press release. The union and airline didn't immediately disclose the details of the agreement but said they would in the coming days. Earlier this month, leaders at Transport Workers Union of America 556, which represents Southwest flight attendants, said they rebuffed a tentative agreement that would have allowed for a membership vote. ABUJA, June 20 (Reuters) - Nigeria's main labour unions and the government on Monday set an eight-week timeline to finalise an agreement to raise the minimum wage to help cushion the impact of high fuel prices after the removal of a popular but costly petrol subsidy. The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had threatened to strike after fuel prices tripled following President Bola Tinubu's decision to scrap the subsidy. Talks with the unions are one of the first challenges the new administration faces as it pushes forward with a raft of economic reforms. "Everything must be rolled out within that time, (it is) not something that we are going to leave endlessly," he said. [1/2] U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) speaks to reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., June 8, 2023. The House is scheduled this week to consider Republican messaging bills that were delayed by the standoff. McCarthy can afford to lose no more than four Republican votes on any measure that faces uniform opposition from Democrats. Norman and other conservatives want 12 appropriations bills that Congress will try to pass in coming months to contain deeper spending cuts included in a Republican debt ceiling bill that passed the House in April. But moderate Republicans warned that hardball tactics could backfire on conservatives if party infighting forces Republican leaders to rely on Democratic votes to move critical legislation.

Morocco considers Western Sahara its own, but the Algeria-backed Polisario front demands an independent state there. The NSC's head, National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi, met Moroccan foreign minister Nasser Bourita on Wednesday, Morocco's foreign ministry said without offering further details. At that meeting, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said: "I hope we will meet very soon in a different desert but with the same spirit." Moroccan media reported a possible plan to reconvene in the Western Sahara town of Dakhla. Holding it in coastal Dakhla could pose a challenge for Washington, which has never followed through on Trump's pledge to open a U.S. consulate in Western Sahara.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 7 (Reuters) - Nikola (NKLA.O) adjourned its shareholder meeting on Wednesday after failing to garner enough support for a proposal to increase the number of shares the electric truck maker is allowed to issue, delaying its prospects of raising much-needed capital. The company, like other electric vehicle makers, has been grappling with dwindling cash and weakening demand amid fears of a recession. While some proposals require a majority of shares voted, Proposal 2 needs more than 50% of all outstanding shares in favor to pass. "More than 77% of shares voted through June 6 have been in favor of Proposal 2, but more time is needed to obtain the required vote," Nikola said in a statement, adding that the meeting will reconvene on July 6. Nikola shares have dropped about 73% this year to 59 cents as of Wednesday's close, below Nasdaq's $1 threshold.

Sisters Audrey Findlay, 75, and Barbara Rowe, 63, start every weekday with an 8 a.m. phone call. An hour or so later, they head to work together at Findlay Rowe, the gift shop they opened 12 years ago. (Previously, they worked at the same health care company for 13 years, where Ms. Findlay was the general manager and Ms. Rowe was the payroll manager.) At 5 or 6 p.m., the sisters leave work and head to their homes — four houses apart. The sisters do have their arguments, as would be expected from two people who frequently spend the bulk of their days together.

It was one the president deployed once again behind closed doors at the White House. With Memorial Day on the horizon, senior White House officials said protecting veterans’ benefits was a top priority. They also knew it was a sensitive issue for Republicans’ politically, especially as House Republicans parried White House allegations about cuts to veterans’ services. White House officials would engage in conversations where their Republican counterparts would outline a potential resolution on issues. For months, White House officials hoped – and to some degree based on past battles, expected – Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell would engage in finding a resolution.

Oil prices gain 1% on falling U.S. stockpiles, Saudi warning

Oil prices rose over 1% on Wednesday, after a large unexpected drawdown in U.S. crude inventories and a warning from the Saudi energy minister that raised the prospect of further OPEC+ production cuts. U.S. crude inventories posted a massive surprise drawdown, falling by 12.5 million barrels last week to 455.2 million barrels, the Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday. U.S. gasoline stocks dropped by 2.1 million barrels in the week to 216.3 million barrels, the EIA said, while distillate stockpiles fell by 600,000 barrels in the week to 105.7 million barrels. Saudi Arabia's energy minister said short-sellers - those betting that prices will fall - should "watch out" for pain. "Oil prices are trading higher ... buoyed by the latest short-seller warning from Saudi Arabia," said OANDA senior market analyst Craig Erlam.

Gold slips as dollar advances with US debt talks dragging on

Gold slipped as the dollar firmed, cutting some safe- haven flows into bullion from the looming risk of a U.S. debt default as talks entered a critical stretch. "Overwhelmingly, the debt ceiling headlines are at play.... Gold gained in the previous session "despite headwinds from a rising broad dollar, which reveals notable demand behind the scenes." Wall Street's main indexes opened lower as the debt ceiling impasse kept investors on edge. If regional U.S. banking troubles were to subside and agreement reached over the debt ceiling, gold could fall further, said Edward Gardner, commodities economist at Capital Economics.

HIROSHIMA, Japan, May 21 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden and House Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy will meet to discuss the debt ceiling on Monday, after a "productive" phone call as the president headed back to Washington, the two sides said on Sunday. Staff members from both sides will reconvene for talks at 6 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Sunday. A failure to lift the debt ceiling by that date would trigger a default that would cause chaos in financial markets and spike interest rates. SPENDING CUTSMcCarthy said Republicans backed an increase in the defense budget while cutting overall spending, and that debt ceiling talks have not included discussions about tax cuts passed under former President Donald Trump. McCarthy has said he will give House lawmakers 72 hours to review an agreement before bringing it up for a vote.
President Joe Biden, a Democrat, insists Congress has a constitutional duty to raise the limit without conditions to fund previously approved spending. POLARISATIONYellen said the first major standoff over the debt ceiling since 2011 reflected continuing U.S. polarisation after the presidency of Donald Trump. "Maybe this time is more difficult, but I'm hopeful that...we will find a solution." Despite the debt ceiling fight, Yellen said she remained convinced that the Biden administration had re-established U.S. leadership in the world and other G7 leaders were grateful they had turned "the dial 180 degrees relative to the Trump administration". "We should be talking about raising the debt ceiling.

WASHINGTON, April 14 (Reuters) - International Monetary Fund chief Kristalina Georgieva said on Friday that debtors and creditors made "tangible progress" on debt restructuring issues this week, but urged countries facing mounting debt problems to seek help earlier in the process. A new sovereign debt roundtable was helping to accelerate work on debt restructurings, Georgieva told a news conference during the IMF and World Bank spring meetings in Washington. But countries nearing debt distress and their creditors should move forward on reprofiling debt levels before a full restructuring was needed, she said. Imagine a further tightening of financial conditions, that increases the burden on these countries," she added. Georgieva said the IMF would continue to work closely with the 20 African countries with heavy debt burdens to avoid getting to the point where restructurings were needed.

The grand jury has been hearing evidence from the Manhattan District Attorney's office about possible crimes related to a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. The Washington Post, citing two people familiar with the matter, said the grand jury hiatus was due in part to a pre-scheduled two-week break starting April 10, following the April 9 Easter holiday. A law enforcement source told Reuters the grand jury is not expected to reconvene on the Trump case until after Easter, without providing a specific date. Grand jury proceedings are secret. The grand jury is believed to meet generally on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
The grand jury has been hearing evidence from the Manhattan District Attorney's office about possible crimes related to a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. The payment was in exchange for her silence about a sexual encounter Daniels said she had with Trump a decade earlier. A law enforcement source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was unclear exactly when after the holiday the grand jury would hear evidence again in the Trump case. Grand jury proceedings are secret. The grand jury is believed to generally meet on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s probe into whether Donald Trump falsified business records is ongoing and there’s no evidence that Bragg has resigned from his position. One Facebook user said: “Manhattan D.A., Alvin Bragg has now stated that all charges (what charges?) against President Trump have been dropped, and that Bragg is now resigning as D.A. There is no evidence Bragg has resigned, and his office has not indicted Trump on any charges. The claim appears to stem from a digitally altered video of Bragg.
The New York grand jury hearing testimony about Donald Trump’s role in paying hush money to a porn star heads into a new week amid public anticipation about a potential indictment of the former president, who has escalated his rhetorical attacks on prosecutors. The panel is expected to reconvene Monday, according to people familiar with the matter, after it last heard testimony in the Trump investigation a week ago. The grand jury has been weighing the Trump case as well as other unrelated matters. Its agenda for the week isn’t clear.
David Pecker testified Monday before the Trump hush-money grand jury in Manhattan. The ex-publisher was one of the first witnesses to testify before the grand jury, and he is expected to be among its last. The grand jury did not meet the rest of last week. Trump was reportedly in the room in 2015 when Cohen discussed hush-money payments with Pecker. The grand jury is expected to reconvene on the hush-money matter Wednesday afternoon.
