Perez to feel the love even if the dream is dashed

"I don't think Max is going to get the warmest reception in Mexico," commented team boss Christian Horner after Verstappen won to boos in Austin last Sunday. Perez, with 'Never Give Up' prominent on a specially-designed helmet for the occasion, remains positive despite a run of poor form. Perez, a winner twice this year, has been off the podium in his previous four outings and beaten by Verstappen in the last 14. Verstappen has won four of the last five Mexican Grands Prix while Perez has been third in the last two. Denmark's Frederik Vesti will take George Russell's Mercedes and Britain's Oliver Bearman replaces Kevin Magnussen at Haas for FP1.

The Botched Hunt for the Gilgo Beach Killer
  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( Robert Kolker | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
This summer, after 13 years, the police finally made an arrest in the Gilgo Beach murders. When I was reporting “Lost Girls,” my 2013 book about the case and victims, the police were largely silent. Since July, I’ve conducted interviews with people close to the Gilgo case during every chapter of its bizarre 13-year timeline. (Several sources asked for anonymity, concerned that public statements by insiders might undercut the case against Heuermann before the trial.) From the moment those women were found at Gilgo Beach, the law-enforcement culture of Suffolk County seemed so preternaturally ill suited to handle this case that a killer was allowed to roam free.

It’s hot in there and we’re not just talking about the steam in the showers, though there’s a lot of that, too. A naval base in real life, it has a picturesque location on a pier; the show’s Italian title, “Mare Fuori,” translates more literally to “The Sea Outside,” as in the sea outside the prison windows. Italian viewers are getting ready for Season 4, whose filming was occasionally interrupted by the screams of fans clustered outside the prison gates. Based on the first season, it is easy enough to understand the impact of “The Sea Beyond” on T-shirt sales and young heart rates. Its heart is pure soap opera, and the writing and direction do not aspire to more.

The number of LinkedIn posts grew 41% from 2021 to 2023. A larger rival account emerged, State Of LinkedIn, and a Reddit community thrived — "LinkedIn Lunatics." "Do you realize how dangerous it is to troll via LinkedIn posts? For most people, their LinkedIn posts don't escalate so rapidly. According to Joseph Yeh, a tech recruiter in California who used to work for LinkedIn, revelatory posting is a balancing act.

CNN —Rupert Murdoch’s reign over the insidious right-wing media kingdom he forged into existence over a decades-long career is coming to a close. Murdoch is a strategic thinker and ruthless businessman, who would have given the timing of his exit immense thought. Is the announcement an indication that Murdoch is attempting to further cement his son, Lachlan, as his successor? The other question is: How will this transition impact the organization of Murdoch’s companies? And the biggest question of all: Does Murdoch have some additional surprises left up his sleeve?

Rupert Murdoch is stepping down as chairman of the board of both Fox Corp. and News Corp. , the companies said Thursday. Lachlan Murdoch, one of his sons, will become sole chairman of News Corp. and will continue as Fox Corp.'s executive chair and CEO. At the time, Fox had opposed having the elder Murdoch — as well as other top Fox executives — appearing in person, citing his age. Since July 2022, Murdoch had worked from his home in Montana rather than going into Fox or News Corp. offices, according to a securities filing. News Corp. owns newspapers The Wall Street Journal and New York Post, among other publications, while Fox is the parent company of right-leaning TV networks Fox News and Fox Business.

Donald J. Trump’s lead in the Republican primary just keeps growing. He’s approaching the position of George W. Bush, who led John McCain by a similar margin at this stage of the 2000 race. The 2000 election is a helpful reminder that the race might still become more competitive. Mr. Bush skipped the first two debates, but Mr. McCain ultimately won New Hampshire, cleared the field of significant opponents, and ultimately won six more contests. That’s more than can be said right now for Mr. Trump’s competition, which would probably go 0 for 50 if states voted today.

The following is adapted from Walter Isaacson's biography "Elon Musk," publishing Sept. 12. "Hey, I'd love to come see you and talk about philanthropy and climate," Bill Gates said to Elon Musk when they happened to be at the same meeting in early 2022. In the rarefied fraternity of people who have held the title of richest person on Earth, Musk and Gates have some similarities. Gates had shorted Tesla stock, placing a big bet that it would go down in value. "How can someone say they are passionate about fighting climate change and then do something that reduced the overall investment in the company doing the most?"

As a general rule, the response of tourists to upheaval is a barometer of a destination’s perceived stability. The future of the climate crisis portends the far grimmer prospect of disruption without end. Placed alongside the more mortal implications of catastrophic shifts in our climate, the upending of vacation plans might seem trivial. However, it reveals something about climate change’s totalizing potential and the extent to which persistently violent and volatile weather might compromise our quality of life. But in every case, it will become harder to see our best-laid plans through to fruition, and that threatens the foundations of hope.

A potent mix of hard-won data and rarefied abstract mathematical physics, the standard model of cosmology is rightfully understood as a triumph of human ingenuity. It has its origins in Edwin Hubble’s discovery in the 1920s that the universe was expanding — the first piece of evidence for the Big Bang. Over the past 60 years, cosmology has become ever more precise in its ability to account for the best available data about the universe. Cosmic inflation is an example of yet another exotic adjustment made to the standard model. There is nothing inherently fishy about these features of the standard model.

Mr. Avant, born in a segregated hospital in North Carolina and educated only through the ninth grade, moved easily in the high-powered world of entertainment, helping to establish the idea that Black culture and consumers were forces to be reckoned with. He started out managing a nightclub in Newark in the late 1950s and moved on to representing some of the artists he met there. Joe Glaser, a high-powered agent who handled Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and many other top acts, took Mr. Avant under his wing; perhaps, the documentary suggested, Mr. Glaser, who was white, thought it would be advantageous to have a Black man representing some of his Black clients. In any case, Mr. Avant was soon handling artists including the jazz organist Jimmy Smith and traveling in rarefied circles. Though he knew nothing about the movie business, Mr. Avant worked his brand of magic on the West Coast: Mr. Schifrin has to date been nominated for six Oscars.

Caviar Gets Even More Refined

So it’s perhaps no surprise that chefs are turning their attention to something more rarefied than your everyday osetra: albino caviar, which ranges in color from alabaster to golden, and is the result of uncommon mutations. The most sought after is that of the beluga sturgeon but, says Hermes Gehnen, the founder of N25 Caviar, an international purveyor, “restaurants generally can’t afford it. Although white caviar stock is limited, they aren’t the only pale orbs worth chasing. As he explained, it isn’t that hard for a judge to catch even a faint whiff of the scent of impropriety. And you don’t have to be a federal judge to smell it. We also see knock-on benefits for rival Club name Meta Platforms (META), which unveiled its latest headset last week. Overall, Vision Pro, which debuted at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference Monday, should prove to be a net win for the Club portfolio. The stock market appears to be less impressed, with Apple stock under pressure since CEO Tim Cook presented the new devic e in a pre-recorded presentation Monday. Implications for Meta Vision Pro shouldn't be seen as a detriment to Meta's products , which currently dominant the AR/VR headset market. Beyoncé and Jay-Z Join the $100 Million Home Club

Beyoncé and Jay-Z, no strangers to flashy real estate deals, reportedly upgraded from their $88 million mansion in Bel Air, Calif., to a $200 million Malibu property last month, officially erasing the line between going big and going home. The sale marks the most expensive residential real estate deal in California history — but not the most expensive in American history. That would be the $238 million sale in January 2019 of an unfinished penthouse on Central Park South, in Manhattan, to the billionaire hedge fund tycoon Kenneth C. Griffin. Still, California can claim 10 of the 20 most expensive property sales ever in the United States, according to data compiled by Jonathan Miller of Miller Samuel appraisals. Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who have bought and sold multimillion-dollar homes in Miami, New Orleans and the Hamptons, are now in a rarefied club of celebrities who own properties worth $100 million or more.

Meanwhile, the smaller TV audiences of the cable and streaming age have allowed “Succession” to thrive as a more specific and more niche entertainment. “Succession” can afford to be a rarefied, decadent pleasure, like an ortolan, the deep-fried songbird, eaten whole, that was featured in a memorable Season 1 meal. “Dallas,” like its followers from “Dynasty” through “Empire,” was in the populist soap-opera tradition of letting the audience delight in the woes of rich people. “Succession” has its crowd-pleasing and universal elements too. At root, the series’s family themes are talk-show simple: Hurt people hurt people.

In the Footsteps of Charles III
  + stars: | 2023-04-20 | by ( Sarah Lyall | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
No royal heir in British history has waited longer than Charles III, the king formerly known as the Prince of Wales, to ascend the throne. By contrast, Charles — the oldest Prince of Wales in British history to become king — was born a monarch-in-waiting and has had a lifetime to prepare. The public in turn has had a lifetime to get to know Charles, starting from his rarefied childhood in the public eye. But Charles was an unusually outspoken Prince of Wales. He has often waded into debates on unexpected topics like alternative medicine and organic farming (pro) and modernist architecture (against).
