Which is stronger will tip the balance of the South American country's presidential election on Sunday and may reshape its diplomatic ties, economic future, and the wider region's political fault lines. 'NOT MY FIRST CHOICE'Neither Massa or Milei goes into the second round with a strong mandate. "For me, neither of them represents the hopes that I have for the future of the country. This would likely put a brake on more radical reforms and force Massa or Milei to moderate. The powerful regional governors are also split between the Peronists and the main conservative coalition, with none allied to Milei.

Milei has said he will cut all subsidies, but admitted it would have to be done slowly. He admitted hiking energy bills was tough medicine in a society already hurting, but argued it needed to be done. "If you increase energy prices today, there is an inflationary peak and it's over. Conservative leader Mauricio Macri (2015-19) cut energy subsidies back. "I don't think Milei will eliminate all subsidies," she said, adding she would likely vote for him for a "change".

I’ve always admired the wisdom and humor of my elders, and she instilled in me a profound appreciation for their company. Unlike the prevalent notion that aging is negative, my perspective on growing old — very old — was different. Soon after, I decided to make a documentary exploring aging and the experiences of women. A friend of mine, who used to teach fitness courses at a retirement home, introduced me to Madeleine. This short documentary was completed when Madeleine was 107 years old, and I consider myself very fortunate to have known her.

Mexico's former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who was a runner-up to Claudia Sheinbaum in the ruling National Regeneration Movement's (MORENA) presidential primary, holds a press conference in Mexico City, Mexico, September 11, 2023. Afterwards, he had held out the possibility of seeking the presidency with the center-left opposition Citizens' Movement (MC) party. However, this weekend MC closed its register of contenders for its presidential candidacy without Ebrard. He was also a key interlocutor for Mexico's negotiations over trade and immigration with then-U.S. President Donald Trump, and the succeeding Biden administration. That has helped polarize public opinion, and Ebrard urged MORENA to broaden its base and cultivate middle class support.

REUTERS/Raquel Cunha/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Mexican state energy company Pemex and U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) company New Fortress Energy (NFE.O) have terminated a deal to develop potentially the country's first deepwater natural gas project that was signed a year ago, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. Last month, Pemex decided to halt the project after NFE wanted to impose conditions Mexican officials considered unacceptable, including NFE buying the natural gas too cheaply from Pemex, one of the sources said. Pemex wanted to develop Lakach with the U.S. company using a service contract, a mechanism used prior to the Mexico's energy sector opening in 2013-14. Reuters previously reported that officials at the CNH and Pemex had been at odds over how to develop Lakach and other large fields.

In October, Pemex received 55.9 billion pesos ($3.2 billion) from the government to strengthen its financial position, accounts show. Separately, Pemex received 71.7 billion pesos over the quarter for debt amortizations. Instead of focusing so much on Pemex, Mexico could have made more of private-sector investment, boosting renewable electricity output and reducing fossil fuel reliance, he said. Pemex also reported a third-quarter net loss of 79.13 billion pesos, revenues of 462 billion pesos and a financial debt of $105.8 billion.

The bill's original draft, sent by the finance ministry, pitched a reduction to 35%, though ruling lawmakers voted for a larger cut. Pemex is the most heavily indebted oil company in the world, facing some $110.5 billion in debt and hefty amortizations in 2024. Before sitting down with U.S. officials including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador condemned the latest wall plan as a "step backwards". At the talks, officials pledged to step up cooperation to combat drug trafficking, organized crime and to ease migratory pressures on the border. Lopez Obrador has praised U.S. President Joe Biden for not building more border wall during his administration. The barrier was a major bone of contention between the United States and Mexico during Donald Trump's presidency. Still, 2024 is presidential election year in both the United States and Mexico and the resurgence of the wall could become a significant talking point on both sides of the border.

CNN —An Indian minister has accused Canada of giving “operating space” to terrorists and extremists, as he rejected claims by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that the Indian government may have played a role in the assassination of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil. “The Canadian (prime minister) made some allegations initially privately, and then publicly. He said the Indian government had long accused Canada of inaction in dealing with Sikh separatist extremism aimed at creating a separate Sikh homeland. He said India believes Canada has a “very permissive Canadian attitude towards terrorists, extremist people who openly advocate violence.”Those individuals “have been given operating space in Canada because of the compulsions of Canadian politics,” Jaishankar added. And that has actually compelled me to temporarily suspend even visa operations in Canada,” the minister added.

Spain's right-wing opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo on Wednesday failed to gain the absolute majority of parliamentary votes needed to become prime minister. Feijóo received 172 votes in favor of his mandate in the Wednesday session — four short of the absolute 176 majority needed from the 350-strong parliament. Despite his electoral win over the summer and support from hard right party Vox, Feijóo's Popular Party has so far failed to stitch together the critical support. Should he fail, acting Prime Minister and Spanish Socialist Workers' Party leader Pedro Sanchez has two months to undergo a similar two-vote process in a bid for investiture, before parliament dissolves on Nov. 27 and elections are called on Jan. 14. A potential pardon could bring on the side the support of self-exiled former Catalonia leader Carles Puigdemont's Junts per Catalunya.

REUTERS/Raquel Cunha Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Sept 11 (Reuters) - The Mexican government's plan to run up the biggest budget deficit in decades during the 2024 general election year could put pressure on public finances and eventually threaten its credit rating, analysts said on Monday. Lopez Obrador last week backed former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum as his party's candidate to succeed him. Historic data show the projected budget deficit for 2024 will be the highest since 1988 as a proportion of GDP. The government's higher spending plans should bolster Latin America's second-biggest economy, which has outpaced forecasts this year, brightening the outlook for 2024. He also noted that since Mexico's current account deficit is currently considerably lower than foreign direct investment, there was a pool of untapped demand in the economy that the government could temporarily offset via higher spending.

A draft seen by Reuters had forecast 2024 economic growth at 2.4%, below the final published figure. The 2024 budget will now be debated by lawmakers in Congress, where the ruling coalition of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador commands majorities in both chambers. The key 2024 oil price is used to estimate a large amount of government revenue. State oil company Pemex's overall budget will be cut 36%, according to the draft budget from 2023 funding levels. Mexico overhauled its civil aviation law, but faced several hurdles in recovering the Category 1 rating.
