REUTERS/Bing GuanNEW YORK, March 9 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Thursday blocked 10 companies from selling certain gun components in New York while the state pursues a lawsuit against them aimed at ending sales of illegal, untraceable "ghost guns." The preliminary order by U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman in Manhattan adopts an agreement reached between New York Attorney General Letitia James and the companies last month, court records show. "Today's court order will help protect New York communities and save New Yorkers' lives," James said in a statement. The lawsuits claimed that the companies were creating a public nuisance by selling gun frames and receivers without serial numbers to consumers. Three defendants have settled with New York City, agreeing to stop selling guns there.
Washington state is holding its first carbon-allowance auction on Tuesday, marking a key step forward in a statewide program that will impose a limit on greenhouse gas emissions and make it more expensive for companies to emit carbon pollution. The program imposes a statewide limit, or cap, on greenhouse gas emissions. The new law requires businesses that emit more than 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually to buy emissions allowances at the Washington Department of Ecology's auction. Washington joins 14 other states that have imposed some form of a program that imposes caps on company emissions. Washington has set a goal to curb carbon emissions by 95% below 1990 levels by 2050 — an even more aggressive target than California's plan to achieve an 85% reduction in emissions by 2045.

A Seattle high school basketball team spent Christmas in Vegas after a canceled Southwest flight. "He was like, 'I just want to get those kids home safely,'" Virginia Bethea said. Michael and Virginia Bethea even went out and bought each of the kids a Christmas gift. "This is probably the best Christmas, in all honesty," Virginia Bethea said, adding "just to be able to serve people through this time. "They put more Black boys in college than all high school basketball programs combined in the state of Washington," Virginia Bethea said.

And in recent months, DeSantis has increasingly eclipsed Trump as the top presidential choice among GOP primary voters. Haley and Scott could potentially be competitors to win the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. By the time the Florida GOP primary was held, Jeb Bush had already suspended his campaign, humbled by his fourth-place showing in South Carolina.
Moving species to save them — once considered taboo — is quickly gaining traction as climate change upends habitats. Concerns persist that the novel practice could cause unintended harm the same way invasive plants and animals have wreaked havoc on native species. “Climate change is causing a greater need for this — for taking a species outside its known historical range.”A pending change to the U.S. “In the future, some species’ ranges may shift due to climate change, or their current habitats might become unsuitable due to invasive species encroachment,” Armstrong said in an email. Humanity has been moving species around for centuries, often inadvertently and sometimes causing great harm.
A U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker operated earlier this fall in the Arctic, where rainfall has been increasing and air temperatures have been rising. Life is changing in the snowy, icy Arctic as it becomes warmer and rainier, spurring residents and wildlife to adapt, according to a new report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The 139-page Arctic Report Card was compiled by 147 scientists from 11 countries and included contributions from Native Alaskan scientists for the first time, according to NOAA. It details how warming air temperatures, shorter periods of snow cover, more precipitation and changes in animal migration patterns are affecting the food and health of people who live in the Arctic.
When Naomi Biden, the president’s 28-year-old granddaughter, wore custom Ralph Lauren for a rare White House wedding, one weather-appropriate detail stood out: her long lace sleeves. It looked like a nod to the buttoned-up bodice on the gown Grace Kelly wore to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco. Despite the vanguard of current bridal designers producing more experimental silhouettes—jumpsuits, separates and nearly nude dresses—Ms. Kelly’s classic 1956 look keeps coming back. Among the brides who have emulated her style are Kate Middleton , actresses Lily Collins and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, socialite sisters Paris and Nicky Hilton, and model Jasmine Tookes, as well as legions of less-starry women who associate a high neck and covered arms with timeless glamour.
NICE, France, Oct 27 (Reuters) - France and Spain experienced unusually warm temperatures on Thursday, bringing some bathers out to beaches but also adding to mounting concerns about changing weather patterns in Europe. Western Europe's unusually balmy October follows a summer during which blistering temperatures parched farmlands and rivers and wildfires ran amok. Beach resorts across France have extended their season as the unusually hot weather keeps tourists coming. "This is a summer season that is not ending," said Rene Colomban, head of the Nice beach operators association.
Many of the most destructive and potentially deadly impacts of a hurricane — including storm surge, flooding and rainfall — are not accounted for in a storm's category number. "Hurricane Ian is a very large, slow-moving hurricane. "There have been several alternative scales proposed over the years and none have gained enough attention or traction by the National Hurricane Center," Collins said. "It is important to have such evidence before even proposing to the National Hurricane Center that this should be considered as a replacement." Kantha said the National Hurricane Center acts conservatively and carefully with changes, particularly those with legal implications.
Powerful storms battered three disparate, far-flung corners of the planet over the weekend, but they had one thing in common: They were made stronger and wetter by climate change. The three weekend storms add to a trend of wetter storms in a warmer future, said Michael Wehner, a senior scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. With climate change making storms rainier and more intense, the weekend's extreme weather events offer a glimpse of what could become more common in the future, according to experts. As the world's oceans heat up, they provide more energy for storms, allowing them to intensify as they form. “Hurricane Fiona is a reminder that even though it has been relatively quiet, things can change and strong storms can have a really big impact,” he added.
