Dollars trade at around twice the price they do at the official exchange rate with even banks offering openly offering unofficial rates. An Economy Ministry source denied to Reuters the possibility of the formalization of official parallel FX rates, while a central bank spokesman declined to comment on the topic. Local economist Gustavo Ber said the "daily bleeding" of reserves was a rising concern, with traders closely watching what happened with the peso crawling-peg. The rising pressure on the currency has seen dollars trade at 400 pesos per dollar in parallel markets, compared to 205 pesos at the official rate. Maximiliano Donzelli, analyst at IOL, said a sharp devaluation remained unlikely despite the growing pressure, with temporary and targeted parallel rates more likely.
Snow in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., on Sunday as California braces for another atmospheric river. Two storms were poised to strike the East and West coasts on Monday, forecasters said, bringing a nor’easter from New York to Maine and yet another atmospheric river to California. Parts of the Northeast, which have had a mild winter, are expected to get heavy rain and snow, forecasters said. Along the Pacific Coast, another atmospheric river was set to add to the dizzying tally of storms this winter that have caused historic flooding and near-record rainfall. The National Weather Service warned it could be difficult to commute in some places.

After earlier attacks, the Ukrainian military reported shooting down incoming Russian missiles and explosive drones, but some still reached their targets, damaging power and water supplies and increasing the suffering of the population amid freezing temperatures. Ukrainian authorities in several regions said some incoming Russian missiles were intercepted. Efrem Lukatsky / APFragments from downed Russian missiles damaged two private buildings in the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, the city administration said. Earlier this month, the United States agreed to give a Patriot missile battery to Ukraine to boost the country’s defense. Russian officials have said that any peace plan can only proceed from Kyiv’s recognition of Russia’s sovereignty over the regions it illegally annexed from Ukraine in September.

CNN —A large winter storm system slammed into the western US over the weekend, blanketing mountain areas with heavy snow before taking aim at the South, where it’s expected to bring severe weather, with strong winds, hail and tornadoes possible. More than 15 million people in 14 states are under some sort of a winter weather alert as the powerful storm moves across the county. A multi-day severe storm threat begins Monday for parts of the South and southern central US. A slight threat for severe weather has been issued for parts of western and central Kansas and Oklahoma into northwestern Texas. Duluth, Minnesota, could also see 6 inches of snow and will be under a winter storm watch starting Tuesday morning.
The Pentagon has yet to approve a contract to deliver a counterdrone system it promised over the summer to Kyiv, despite Russia’s surge of recent attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure using Iranian-made unmanned aircraft. In late August, the Pentagon said the U.S. had included a weapons system known as the Vampire in a nearly $3 billion military aid package for Ukraine. The portable, laser-guided missile system is designed to be quickly installed in the bed of a civilian truck and has the ability to destroy drones and other targets beyond the range of standard weapons.
"Russia understood that Ukraine has a powerful energy system, and therefore ... attacked distribution substations, which connected (different) regions," Podolyak said. He also ruled out retaliatory strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Power has been restored to more than 4,000 towns and villages since the strikes, Shmyhal said, but warned of difficult times ahead. "We are planning to make more candles and order more materials because of these blackouts," she said. to authorize a second booster shot of its vaccine — that is, a fourth dose — for people aged 65 and older. Two days later, Moderna followed suit, but with a broader request to authorize a second booster for all adults over 18. The agency said on Tuesday that adults aged 50 and older could opt for a second booster shot of the vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, to be given at least four months after the first booster of any authorized or approved Covid vaccine. A second booster would be the third shot for those who received one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and a booster shot of an mRNA vaccine. In fact, other data from Israel suggests that a second booster has only marginal benefits in healthy young people.
