And if inflation does indeed fall further, Powell suggested the Fed might deviate from its projections and keep rates steady. July's Federal Open Market Committee "will be a live meeting," because "a decision hasn't been made," Powell said. But even if the Fed doesn't hike in July, it's likely to hold rates steady for the rest of the year.

[1/5] Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - June 7, 2023 Poland's Iga Swiatek celebrates winning her quarter final match against Coco Gauff of the U.S. REUTERS/Kai PfaffenbachPARIS, June 7 (Reuters) - Holder Iga Swiatek was tested by American sixth seed Coco Gauff in a rematch of their 2022 French Open title clash but the world number one showed her class to secure a 6-4 6-2 victory and reach the semi-finals on Wednesday. "It was not easy," said Swiatek, the first player since Conchita Martinez in 1995 to drop 15 games or fewer en route to the semi-finals in Paris. It was tight and Coco was using the conditions well, so I was happy that I was able to win. She sealed her seventh victory over Gauff in as many matches by pouncing on her serve again and finished it off on her first matchpoint when the 19-year-old found the net. Sabalenka, who appeared to sarcastically bow to the crowd following the win, said she initially thought the boos were aimed at her. "It was a very tough match, I mean tough emotionally. I'm sorry guys, I didn't get it at first, I thought this booing was against me so I was a little surprised," she said. The Belarusian raised her level again late in the match to save two breakpoints and close out the victory in 71 minutes. CNN —Chelsea won its third consecutive Women’s FA Cup in front of a record crowd at Wembley, triumphing 1-0 over Manchester United in the final thanks to a well-taken Sam Kerr goal in the 68th minute. But, ultimately, this was a day for Chelsea and Kerr who held on to win the FA Cup final in front of a record 77,390 fans at a sun-dappled Wembley. “Everyone stuck at it and we got the win.”It was a historic match in so many ways – the first time a women’s FA Cup match had sold out at Wembley, the first time Manchester United had reached the women’s FA Cup final, a world record crowd for a women’s domestic match, and the first time the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was used in this competition. VAR came into play almost immediately as Leah Galton found the back of the net after just 20 seconds following a sweeping Manchester United attack, but her effort was ruled out for offside. United was appearing in its first major cup final.
Opinion | The Killing of a Homeless Man on the Subway

To the Editor:Re “Subway Killing Both Stuns City and Divides It” (front page, May 5):Politicians and ordinary New Yorkers are pouncing on a debate as to whether or not a subway passenger who put Jordan Neely, a distressed, screaming homeless man, into a chokehold, killing him, should face legal repercussions. Meanwhile, they continue to sit on their hands and not make meaningful investments in solutions that might fundamentally address the city’s crisis of mental illness and homelessness. Jordan Neely is forcing us to ponder that in many ways, we all share some responsibility in his tragic death. In fact, I have always considered that, though our city has its share of bigotry, New Yorkers come together to help each other. Now, in the wake of subway passengers harming and killing another passenger, a homeless man, I am at a loss.
Stepan, 28, who has increasingly driven Chinese cars when using carsharing services, is among those that need convincing. If you want my honest opinion, the difference (with Chinese cars) is massive," he told Reuters at Moscow's Favorit Motors dealership. When buying his new Chinese car, Alexander, 74, looked for one which encompassed Swedish technology. While Chinese cars are increasingly filling the gap, the lack of reputation remains an issue, said auto industry expert Sergey Aslanyan. Chinese brands' market share reached 37.15% in January-February, up from 9.48% a year earlier, Autostat and PPK data showed.
March 17 (Reuters) - Elena Rybakina knocked out defending champion Iga Swiatek with a 6-2 6-2 semi-final victory at Indian Wells on Friday to set up a clash against Aryna Sabalenka in the final. Two months after Rybakina knocked Swiatek out of the Australian Open in the fourth round, the Wimbledon champion once again put in an impressive display against the world number one. Rybakina was in control from the start, breaking early to take a 2-0 lead, before going on to clinch the first set when Swiatek produced a double fault on set point. "I really played well today, it was a really nice atmosphere tonight," Rybakina said in her on-court interview. Rybakina will be out for revenge when she faces Sabalenka, who defeated her in the Australian Open final in January.
CD&R to take Focus Financial private in over $7 bln deal

Feb 27 (Reuters) - Focus Financial Partners Inc (FOCS.O) has agreed to be taken private by affiliates of buyout firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R) in an all-cash transaction valued at more than $7 billion including debt, the companies said on Monday. The buyout firm's offer highlights how private equity firms are pouncing on the plunge in valuations to snap up companies. CD&R and Stone Point will fund the deal, which is expected to close in the third quarter of this year, with fully-committed equity financing. Stone Point and fellow private equity firm KKR & Co (KKR.N) owned New York-based company Focus prior to its listing in 2018. Jefferies LLC and Goldman Sachs are financial advisers to Focus, while Moelis & Co, Truist Securities Inc and BofA Securities are among advisers to CD&R.
Feb 24 (Reuters) - Cvent Holding Corp (CVT.O), a U.S. software provider that facilitates in-person and virtual meetings, has rejected a $3.9 billion acquisition offer from buyout firm Blackstone Inc (BX.N), people familiar with the matter said on Friday. Blackstone is taking a break from the negotiations after Cvent rejected its $8-per-share offer as too low, the sources said. Shares of Cvent, which is controlled by private equity firm Vista Equity Partners Management LLC, had ended trading on Thursday at $7.64. Cvent, Blackstone and Vista Equity declined to comment. Cvent shares have since dropped due to concerns that an economic slowdown, brought about by the U.S. Federal Reserve's higher interest rates to fight inflation, will lower demand for conferences and events that drive the company's business.

GIRONA, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Pedri celebrated his 100th match for Barcelona as he came off the bench and scored from close range in the second-half to give the LaLiga leaders a hard-fought 1-0 win at Girona on Saturday. With forwards Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres suspended and midfielder Pedri recovering from muscle discomfort, Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez opted to rotate his side on a chilly afternoon at Montilivi. Despite having almost 70% of possession in the first half, Barcelona struggled to break the deadlock against Girona’s low block. Barcelona finished the match with only three shots on target, having made the most of their only clear opportunity. "I believe that in these games you have to win it in any way possible," Barcelona defender Jules Kounde told DAZN.
Felix sees red on debut as Chelsea slump at Fulham

The win lifted Fulham above Liverpool and up to sixth in the Premier League standings on 31 points after 19 games. Potter had no complaints about the red card, describing Felix's challenge on Tete as a "forward's tackle". The second half wasn't at our best level," he said. They lost midfielder Denis Zakaria to injury, however, and Felix to a red card, the 23-year-old wildly lunging at Tete after losing the ball. Felix, whose loan signing cost Chelsea a reported 9 million pounds ($11 million), will miss the next three league matches against Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Fulham due to suspension.
Warren Buffett is likely go on a stock-buying spree in 2023, Tesla CEO Elon Musk says. Musk has flagged higher interest rates and a looming recession as headwinds for stocks. "If a company has very strong fundamentals, but then the market is doing some short-term panic situation, obviously that's the the right time to buy stock," Musk added. Still, Musk has quoted the investor on earnings calls, while Buffett has praised Tesla's unlikely success and hailed Musk as a "remarkable guy." The suspect accused of killing five people in an attack on a Colorado LGBTQ club opened fire almost immediately after arriving and later claimed to not have slept for days, police said in an affidavit released Wednesday. Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, was charged Tuesday with 305 criminal counts, including murder and hate crimes, in the shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs just before midnight Nov. 19. Aldrich was taken down by bystanders, stopping the attack, officials and witnesses have said. A further 17 people were injured by gunfire, and five others had physical injuries from other causes, officials have said. The charges against Aldrich include first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and bias-motivated crimes.
The suspect in last month's deadly rampage at a Colorado LGBTQ nightclub was charged Tuesday with 305 criminal counts in what could be the most heavily prosecuted murder case in state history, authorities said. The 305 charges filed in court include first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and bias-motivated crimes, District Attorney Michael Allen told the court. Allen said he couldn't recall a murder trial with so many counts. "But there could be others out there that I’m just not thinking of right now.”Lawyers on both sides asked the judge to schedule Aldrich's preliminary hearing for May. But 4th Judicial District Judge Michael McHenry insisted the hearing can start sooner and ordered both sides to be ready on Feb. 22 for a preliminary hearing he expected to last two days.
Forest edge out Palace to move off the bottom

NOTTINGHAM, England, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Morgan Gibbs-White grabbed the only goal as Nottingham Forest beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at the City Ground on Saturday to ensure that they will not spend Christmas at the bottom of the Premier League. "We rode our luck with the penalty but I thought the best team won," Forest manager Steve Cooper told the BBC. Instead, it was Palace who were awarded a spot-kick when Joe Worrall brought down Zaha just before halftime. Lingard could have killed off the game in the 75th minute after a brilliant Forest attack in which Gibbs-White picked out Brennan in the box. Palace left plenty of space for Forest to exploit as they poured forward looking for an equaliser, but the home side hung on for a much-needed win.
