Shares of Tinder owner Match jumped as much as 12% during Tuesday morning trading after The Wall Street Journal reported that Elliott Management, the activist investing firm behind campaigns at Salesforce and Pinterest , had built a roughly $1 billion stake in the online dating company. The company had a market cap of $10 billion at the close Monday, but that pales in comparison to its more than $45 billion market cap in 2021. Elliott is expected to engage with Match management, the Journal reported citing people familiar with the matter, but it was not clear if that engagement would include nominating its own directors. But the company reported a continued tumble in so-called Tinder payers in November when it reported third-quarter earnings. A spokesperson for Elliott Management was not immediately available for comment.

The company's stunning progress garnered the love of Wall Street, with analysts upping their price targets on the stock to account for future growth and naming it among their top AI picks. Nvidia's 'iPhone moment' Few could have predicted the frenzy ChatGPT would create when it debuted in late 2022, but no company could have been better prepared for the excitement than Nvidia. What to expect in 2024 Many on Wall Street don't foresee Nvidia hype dying down in the new year. In fact, many investors expect shares to keep rising as long as the company can smash expectations and guide higher. That's a feat many on Wall Street expect the company to accomplish, with the consensus price target implying another 35% upside for shares, according to FactSet.

With a power vacuum and years of civil conflict following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, militias grew and multiplied in Iraq, some supported by Iran. While he came to power with the Iranian-backed groups' support, he also wants continued good relations with the U.S. and has backed the ongoing presence of American troops in his country. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a meeting with al-Sudani this month, warned of consequences if Iranian-backed militias continued to attack U.S. facilities in Iraq and Syria. An official with one of the Iranian-backed militias said al-Sudani put “great pressure” on the militias not to carry out attacks during Blinken's visit. But the U.S. military response to the attacks on its forces has been minimal.

And if the political strategist James Carville was right that “it’s the economy, stupid,” the next several months could make or break Joe Biden’s economic record. As things stand, the current ruler of the free world touts a fragile advantage. Households’ disposable income after adjusting for inflation hit a record $20 trillion in the month that Biden’s measure was approved, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. STUDENT LOANSForgiving swaths of student debt was another of Biden’s campaign promises, but his efforts have so far failed. Under Starbucks’ new wage plan announced Monday morning, only baristas with more than five years of experience will win 5% raises. All other employees will come in below the 4.1% jump in average hourly pay over the last 12 months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Part-time workers at United Parcel Service (UPS.N) won a 48% average pay hike over five years, akin to a 10% annual increase. While U.S. baristas continue to organize, contracts approved at two Canadian Starbucks stores suggests employees’ bargaining power is fizzling.

Europe's startup ecosystem has been battered this year but climate tech founders have managed to avoid the brunt of the immense downturn so far. PwC's global analysis of the sector also points to climate tech outperforming the norm, accounting for a tenth of private market investments in 2023. Venture capital investment into European startups more broadly is primed to slump by around 46% to 58.1 billion euros in 2023. These obligations have helped make climate tech startups "catnip to investors," Sustainable Ventures' Stuart Ferguson said. Last year, European companies like electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar and batter-maker Northvolt raised 1.6 billion euros and 1 billion euros respectively.

Planet Fitness shares could soar as new weight loss drugs become popular and users flock to the gym, according to Evercore ISI. Shares of Planet Fitness have dropped about 30% in 2023, plunging 16% in a single day last month when the company announced the surprise ousting of CEO Chris Rondeau . Although GLP-1 drugs aid weight loss by suppressing appetite, it's still essential for patients to adopt healthy habits for long-term success. This is a positive development for Planet Fitness, resulting in a rush of new gym memberships, Cheng said. North Korea boast a fearsome artillery and ammo arsenal that would boost Russia's dwindling supply. With a clear need for firepower and a dwindling group of allies to get it from, Russia is turning to North Korea. The United States imported nearly $127.5 billion in goods from Vietnam in 2022, compared with $101.9 billion in 2021 and $79.6 billion in 2020, according to US government data. The United States needs a trusted partner for its supply of chips, and Vietnam can do just that, Osius said. But that compares favorably with a global growth forecast of 3%, and is noticeably faster many of the world’s major economies, such as the United States, China and the eurozone. Politically, Vietnam shares many similarities to China in that it is an authoritarian one-party state that tolerates little dissent. Vietnam is an obvious choice, because it’s a cheap alternative to manufacturing in China, said García-Herrero.

New York CNN —Digital World Acquisition Corp., the blank-check firm seeking to merge with former President Donald Trump’s media company, will get another extension to complete its troubled deal. Shareholders voted to grant DWAC (DWAC) another year to pull off its merger with Trump Media & Technology Group, which owns Truth Social, according to an SEC document posted Wednesday. Had shareholders voted against the extension, DWAC would have liquidated, and the social media platform would have to find another financial backer by September 8, 2023.
