Hal Lawton, the chief executive of the Brentwood, Tennessee-based company, had said these initiatives “make great business sense for Tractor Supply.”But Tractor Supply has decided that all of those risks are now worth ignoring. By walking away from diversity and climate goals, Tractor Supply has become the latest corporate giant to retreat from progressive initiatives it once promoted, joining Bud Light, Target and others. Tractor Supply declined to comment on these statements. Tractor Supply’s customer base has historically been primarily older men, who lean Republican, but Tractor Supply has increasingly tried to draw Millennials and women, who tend to favor Democrats. Tractor Supply’s reversal could hurt it with these customers, who could be crucial as the company’s historic base ages out of the market.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is set to testify on Capitol Hill before the U.S. House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday. The appearance comes after Powell appeared before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs on Tuesday. Investors will be listening to hear if Powell gives any hints about when the Fed might begin to cut rates. The central bank has a meeting later this month, though traders see a cut in July as unlikely. Representatives could also ask about the Fed's oversight of banks, including the potential risks of commercial real estate to regional lenders.

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun will face questions from the Senate Permanent Subcommitee on Investigations on Tuesday over quality control concerns and whistleblower allegations. Boeing's bestselling 737 Max plane has been the source of controversy since two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019. Following the incident, company whistleblower Sam Salehpour came forward and claimed that the aerospace company put excessive stress on airplane joints, which reduced some of the planes' lifespans. Mohawk alleges that the lost parts were likely installed on airplanes in Boeing's Washington plant where 737 Max models are made. The company announced March that Calhoun will step down from his post as CEO before the end of the year.

Latinas face the steepest climb up the corporate ladder despite being as ambitious as their white peers, according to new research from Lean In. Latinas lag behind nearly all other major demographic groups in the executive ranks — white men and white women, Black men and women, even Latino men — comprising a mere 1% of C-suite executives at U.S. companies. A "broken rung" at the first critical step up to manager is still holding Latinas back from climbing the corporate ladder — for every 100 men promoted to manager, only 74 Latinas are promoted, Lean In reports. Latinas are less likely than white women and women overall to have their work highlighted to a leader or to have benefited from a sponsor action like being recommended for a promotion. Nearly half (44%) of Latinas say career growth has become more important to them in the last two years, compared with 32% of white women, Lean In reports.

I've stopped making friends at work
  + stars: | 2024-06-04 | by ( Alexandra Karplus | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +8 min
Because the city has a large transient population, I've seen many friends and coworkers come and go — but even this has had benefits. I've made trips to visit my work friends in their new homes around the world. Work friendships started back in New York and are still going strongThese types of strong connections with colleagues didn't just start in Singapore. More than half of those surveyed said they'd met a close friend through their work or a spouse's work. I haven't been introduced to any of my coworkers' friends or partners, nor has my husband met any of them.

The executive order will temporarily ban undocumented immigrants from obtaining asylum when migrant crossings exceed a certain threshold — a daily average of 2,500 over seven consecutive days. Given current levels of migrant crossings, which Department of Homeland Security officials estimate at 4,000 per day, the action is expected to take effect immediately. The executive order could also have economic impacts by tightening the labor market's growth and potentially unclogging U.S.-Mexico supply chains.

Policymakers remain concerned that inflation is not showing enough evidence that it is moving toward the Fed's 2% annual target. Recent data points have shown prices both at the consumer and wholesale levels running hotter than expected while consumer sentiment also has shown elevated expectations over the short term. Markets still expect the Fed to lower rates later this year, and Powell said following the FOMC meeting that he thinks it unlikely that rates will increase from here.

Out in the world, chess' resurgence has been accompanied by a wave of new clubs and events. I made a pilgrimage to the Marshall Chess Club, a 109-year-old institution in Greenwich Village. The following evening, I went to an East Village bar and found a very different scene at Club Chess.
