Morgan Housel(Note: Morgan Housel will be on HalfTime Report today at 12:35 PM ET and on ETF Edge at 1:10 PM. To give you an idea of how big that is, a typical financial book will sell roughly 5,000 copies. Now Housel is back with a second book, "Same As Ever: Timeless Lesson on Wealth, Greed and Happiness." Housel cites Charlie Munger, who noted that the world isn't driven by greed, it's driven by envy. Today's economy is good at generating three things: wealth, the ability to show off wealth, and great envy for other people's wealth."

Deep structural problems mean Europe is bound to trail most other big economic areas for years to come. The labour market remains tight and the world economy is rebounding, so external demand is also likely to be healthier. Fearing it will be difficult to hire in future, firms are now hanging onto workers, creating even more labour market tightness, potentially fuelling wage growth and weakening productivity. The potential growth rate for Europe's largest economy is now below 1%. European Union governments are meanwhile struggling to reach consensus on bigger questions that will help shape the future.

If both are calculated in dollar terms, however, Chinese stocks have, by some measures, carried an advantage over the very long term. Many observers say demographics, deleveraging, and de-risking - U.S. firms on-shoring, new supply chains, and trade tensions – will be a considerable long-term drag on Chinese growth. Little wonder, perhaps, that Chinese stocks are so cheap. Reuters Image Acquire Licensing RightsBased on 12-month forward price/earnings multiples, U.S. stocks are twice as expensive as Chinese stocks. For the past 10 years Chinese stocks have been substantially cheaper than U.S. stocks, and most of the decade before that they were usually cheaper too.

You think and think and think, and you still can't believe that things changed so radically in such a short period of time. So, let's pull apart Apple, Amazon, Meta and Alphabet to try to understand how unimportant what actually happened at these companies might be. Instead, Apple stock has climbed roughly 5% since it reported quarterly results on Nov. 2. Meta stock fell to $288 a share, down from $314, in a couple of sessions just because of that line in its earnings report. But like Apple and Amazon, Meta stock stabilized and has risen more than 14% since late October.

People walk on a crosswalk at a business district in central Tokyo, Japan September 29, 2017. The monthly poll mirrored a similar improvement seen in the third quarter in the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) closely-watched quarterly tankan survey. The service-sector index grew to plus 27 from plus 24 in the previous month, led by retailers, information and communications, and other services. Analysts expect Japan's economy, the world's third-biggest, to have shrunk in the third quarter, the first contraction in four quarters, according to a Reuters poll. The Reuters Tankan indexes are calculated by subtracting the percentage of pessimistic respondents from optimistic ones.

Mainstream investment giants such as BlackRock (BLK.N) and Fidelity, as well as crypto-focused firms like Grayscale, have filed applications for spot bitcoin ETFs. U.S. crypto firm NYDIG estimates demand for a spot bitcoin ETF at around $30 billion. Their calculation compares the sizes of the gold and bitcoin ETFs - $210 billion versus $28.8 billion, respectively - and adjusts them for their relative volatility. BlackRock declined to comment on its pending spot bitcoin ETF, other than to confirm that it is still awaiting final SEC approval. His forecast is based on how demand evolved in smaller markets where spot bitcoin ETFs already exist, such as Canada.

Looking ahead, the ongoing pass-through of the European Central Bank's monetary policy tightening, still no reversal of the inventory cycle and new geopolitical uncertainties will continue weighing on the German economy, Brzeski said. "The German economy looks set to remain in the twilight zone between minor contraction and stagnation not only this year but also next year," Brzeski said. The contraction in the third quarter is not seen as an outlier as Commerzbank expects the German economy to contract again in the winter half-year. Economists will pay close attention to national inflation data from Germany and Spain, as they are published one day before the euro zone inflation data release. Euro zone inflation is expected to ease to 3.2% in October from 4.3% in September, according to economists polled by Reuters.

It's a big week: a Federal Reserve meeting, unemployment numbers and earnings for the biggest company in the S & P 500. The problem is the S & P 500, as a barometer of economic health, much like Pollyanna, skews optimistic by nature of its design. By contrast to the S & P, the R2K tracks smaller, less well-known businesses. In this way a call option will increase in value if the stock price rises through the strike price. In this case the "at-the-money" straddle expiring this coming Friday, November 3rd, is priced at $7.70 or nearly 4.6% of the current stock price.

The World Is Becoming More African

Old World Young Africa As the world grays, Africa blooms with youth. The World Is Becoming More African Part one of a series on how the youth boom is changing the continent, and beyond. But while a handful of African countries are poised to ride the demographic wave, others risk being swamped by it. In the West, racists and right-wing nationalists stoke fears of African population growth to justify hatred, or even violence. The age gap between geriatric leaders and restless youth is “a major source of tension” in many African countries, said Simon Mulongo, a former African Union diplomat from Uganda.

Amid the chaos of climate change, humans tend to focus on humans. Now that wildlife is depleted and hemmed in, climate change has come crashing down. In 2016, scientists in Australia announced the loss of a rodent called the Bramble Caymelomys, one of the first known species driven to global extinction by climate change. Their work brings them face to face with realities that few of us see firsthand. These scientists are witnesses to an intricately connected world that we have pushed out of balance.

It's an old Silicon Valley philosophy packaged anew: Growth without guardrails. Silicon Valley enters the age of e/accAndreessen and other prominent Silicon Valley figures such as Y Combinator president Garry Tan have quietly added the term e/acc to their social media profiles. In his manifesto, Andreessen calls it "techno-optimism." To some extent, it's a repackaging of what Silicon Valley has always peddled — let us build, grow, and make money without limitations. "Techno-optimists believe growth is progress," Andreessen argues, adding that growth is driven by the progress of technology without hindrance.

Over the past seven decades, the world economy has grown 14-fold, powered by a 45-fold expansion in global trade, according to the World Trade Organization. World trade as a percentage of GDP peaked at 61% in 2008. The first is rising geopolitical tensions between the United States and China. The retrenchment is probably going to be gradual: global trade was still worth 57% of world GDP last year. For 2024, the WTO said growth in goods trade would pick up to 3.3%, virtually unchanged from its April estimate of 3.2%.

In both cases the outcome would push the Fed from that "golden path" onto a far more familiar one: An economy buckling as borrowing costs rise and confidence wanes. "I don't think it is unavoidable" that joblessness will have to rise significantly for inflation to return to target, Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan said on Monday. But the most important thing is that we stay focused on restoring price stability, and I think that will require some rebalancing in the labor market." Her look at past periods of inflation and disinflation makes her think the labor market may still need a shock for the Fed to succeed. "As nice as it is to see a really strong labor market, when you are trying to get inflation down, that's not your friend."

This is one of the concerns that has turned Instacart's IPO into a flop on its second day as a public company. To be successful, an IPO must deliver a big pop to the investors who signed on to buy stock when it debuts. He came out with an analysis of Instacart's business on Tuesday, valuing the company at $29 a share. The reason: The grocery business is low-margin, so there's not a lot of room for Instacart to skim more fees. "In short, the growth in online grocery sales will be higher than total grocery sales growth, but not overwhelmingly so."

Some Hollywood studios have long-term leases in place at soundstages and can control what they film and when, but most producers book stages for specific productions. And until the strikes are resolved, it's difficult to plan ahead, so most productions are waiting to move forward. But several high-level studio execs, studio investors, and producers told Insider the gears are starting to turn, with some productions beginning scenario planning. Of course, no one's expecting spending on new entertainment to be what it once was once the strikes end. Some projects were ready to start production, with sets already built, or were in mid-production on a TV series.

US home sales are headed for the largest slowdown since 2011, according to Fannie Mae. That's due to headwinds like higher mortgage rates, amid a weakening US economy. That figure will only improve slightly in 2024, with total home sales expected to hit 4.9 million, Fannie Mae economists said. Optimists who say the US is on track to avoid a recession have pointed to still-robust consumer spending, but current trends look unsustainable when considering incomes, Fannie Mae said. Experts say housing affordability and sales are unlikely to improve until mortgage rates dial back more significantly, likely to around the 5% range.

Over the course of three conversations this summer, Acemoglu told me he's worried we're currently hurtling down a road that will end in catastrophe. "There's a fair likelihood that if we don't do a course correction, we're going to have a truly two-tier system," Acemoglu told me. "I was following the canon of economic models, and in all of these models, technological change is the main mover of GDP per capita and wages," Acemoglu told me. In later empirical work, Acemoglu and Restrepo showed that that was exactly what had happened. "I realize this is a very, very tall order," Acemoglu told me.

The gloom across the business sector underlines the challenge for Japanese policymakers and raises doubts that exports could fuel an economic recovery in the face of weak domestic demand. The Reuters Tankan monthly poll of 502 big manufacturers, showed a sharp fall in the sector's sentiment index to plus 4, from plus 12 in August. Compared with three month ago, the manufacturers' sentiment index -- calculated by subtracting the percentage of pessimistic respondents from optimistic ones -- was down four points and suggests decline in the quarterly tankan survey. The Reuters Tankan non-manufacturers index also dropped nine points to hit plus 23 in September from the previous month, the biggest decline since May 2020, the survey showed. The business sentiment over the coming three months showed the manufacturers' index flat in December and the service-sector index slightly down at plus 21 at year-end.
