To our modern eyes, the paintings lack the vitality and strength of the animals we are familiar with in Australia. So why did his paintings of the dingo and kangaroo — some of the earliest European representations of Australian animals — look so strange? "Pumpkin with a Stable-lad," a 1774 George Stubbs painting of the racehorse Pumpkin. But Stubbs’ kangaroo more closely resembles the rat-like Gerbua of Banks’ description than the creature we know today. Nicknamed “Moon Museum,” it was attached to a leg of the spacecraft and then left on the moon with it. Called the Lunar Codex, it will be split across three launches planned over the next 18 months. Peralta originally intended the Lunar Codex to include only his own works, such as "Sonnets from the Labrador," but reconceived the project as a global endeavor during the pandemic. It was after college that Reubens created the iconic character Pee-wee Herman while a member of the famed Los Angeles improv group, The Groundlings. Paul Reubens as Pee-wee Herman in 2009. Later this year, the Lunar Codex — a vast multimedia archive telling a story of the world’s people through creative arts — will start heading for permanent installation on the moon aboard a series of unmanned rockets. The Lunar Codex is a digitized (or miniaturized) collection of contemporary art, poetry, magazines, music, film, podcasts and books by 30,000 artists, writers, musicians and filmmakers in 157 countries. It’s the brainchild of Samuel Peralta, a semiretired physicist and author in Canada with a love of the arts and sciences. In 1972, only a handful of years into painting, she died in a car crash and faded into relative obscurity. Lance Weiler is preparing his students at Columbia University for the unknown. “What I’m going to show you might disturb you,” he warned the class in January, at the beginning of his graduate course on digital storytelling. His classes have combined augmented reality with Edgar Allan Poe, virtual reality with Sherlock Holmes and machine learning with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Now, Weiler wants his students ready for an art world that is gradually embracing the latest digital tools. He told his class in a dramatic whisper: “I’m going to show how you can leverage these technologies in your artistic practices.”
