☆ German government not planning blanket Huawei ban

BERLIN, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Germany does not want to follow the United States in generally banning products made by Chinese telecoms equipment makers such as Huawei, but will continue making such decisions on a case-by-case basis, an Economy Ministry spokesperson said on Friday. A German Economy Ministry strategy paper seen by Reuters on Thursday detailed recommendations to increase the level of scrutiny on the use of components from certain states. The paper mentions legislation introduced in Germany in 2020 that set high hurdles for makers of telecommunications equipment for next-generation networks, such as Huawei. When asked whether it expected a tightening of rules or even a ban in Germany or the European Union, Huawei told Reuters on Friday it relied on constructive and facts-oriented dialogue. Representative Michael McCaul, top Republican on the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Germany was "jeopardizing its own national security and that of Europe's" in its decision on Huawei.

Nov 15 (Reuters) - FTX Trading's new CEO John J. Ray III, a lawyer tapped to lead the collapsed crypto exchange's restructuring, previously oversaw the $23 billion bankruptcy of energy firm Enron Corp and has a reputation for boosting creditor recoveries. Ray, 63, on Monday declined to comment on his initial priorities as FTX's CEO. Serving as Enron's CEO throughout its years-long bankruptcy, Ray's work resulted in major settlements with banks accused of helping Enron deceive investors, including a $1.66 billion settlement with Citigroup in 2008. Mark Lichtenstein, an attorney who worked on Enron's bankruptcy, saw many parallels between FTX and that case. "You’ve got such a meltdown, similar to Enron, sort of a run on the bank," Lichtenstein said.

Nov 2 (Reuters) - Veon Ltd (VON.AS), the Dutch-based operator of telecommunications networks, said on Wednesday it was seeking the sale of its Russian operations, which make up more than half of its revenues and earnings. The company said it was conducting a "competitive sales process" for the business, which operates under the Beeline brand. Since then, scores of foreign firms have sought to reduce exposure to Russia and paused or terminated operations there. Veon's position is difficult as it also has significant operations in Ukraine, where it has struggled to keep its Kyivstar arm operating throughout the conflict. Russian media reported last month Veon was considering a sale of Beeline but Veon declined comment at the time.

A pair of right-wing provocateurs pleaded guilty on Monday to telecommunications fraud stemming from robocalls made shortly before the 2020 election. Jacob Wohl, 24, and Jack Burkman, 56, each pleaded guilty to one felony count, a spokesperson from the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed. Both men were indicted in October 2020 on eight counts of telecommunications fraud and seven counts of bribery in connection with trying to influence voters through robocalls on Aug. 26, 2020, that contained disinformation about mail-in voting ahead of the November election. The remaining charges were dismissed Monday, according to Wohl’s attorney, Mark Wieczorek, who declined to comment on his client's guilty plea. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney James Gutierrez said Burkman and Wohl were "held accountable" for infringing on voters' rights.
