KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) — For the second time in nearly four months, officials in a northwestern Arizona county narrowly rejected a proposal to hand count all ballots in the 2024 election cycle rather than using electronic tabulating equipment. County election officials had said it would take 245 new workers and $1.1 million to count all ballots by hand. The company has said trucks are "essential" to restarting three offshore oil platforms and an onshore oil processing facility that have been shuttered since the spill. Gee's decision did not address Exxon's claims that the board's decision amounted to an unconstitutional taking of the company's property and other constitutional claims. Attorney Linda Kropp, who represented several of those groups, said Exxon's trucking plan is "reckless, dangerous and totally unwelcome" and said it puts the community at risk of oil tanker crashes. Exxon had sued in May 2022, alleging the board's denial was a "prejudicial abuse of discretion."

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Reparations advocates urged San Francisco supervisors Tuesday to adopt recommendations aimed at shrinking the racial wealth gap and otherwise improving the lives of Black residents as atonement for decades of discriminatory city policies, including the granting of a lump-sum $5 million payment to every eligible adult. San Francisco's Board of Supervisors was expected to vote Tuesday to accept the final reparations plan issued by the city's African American Reparations Advisory Committee. San Francisco embraces its image as a sanctuary for people living in the country illegally and members of the LGBTQ community. More than 200 people rallied outside City Hall before Tuesday’s board meeting, demanding that the city start addressing the enormous disparities for Black San Franciscans. Critics say the city's reparations plans are unconstitutional and would ruin the city financially.
