Washington CNN —Joe Biden’s national security advisers have no imminent plans to present the president with an updated proposal in the Israel-Hamas war ceasefire negotiations, two senior administration officials told CNN – the latest indication that talks to end the conflict have seriously stalled. Some US officials had indicated in recent weeks that a so-called bridging proposal was being finalized for Biden’s approval before being shared with the other mediators involved in the ceasefire talks, such as Qatar and Egypt. The recent execution of six hostages in Gaza – including one Israeli American – infuriated administration officials who have been intimately involved in the talks. Meanwhile, there has also been growing skepticism in Washington about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political willingness to end the war. Facilitating an end to the Israel-Hamas war before he leaves office is one of the most important foreign policy priorities for Biden.

Oil prices inch up on Fed rate cut outlook
  + stars: | 2024-09-16 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices edged up in early trade on Monday amid expectations of a U.S. interest rate cut this week, though gains were capped by U.S. supply resumptions following Hurricane Francine and weaker China data. Brent crude futures for November were up 15 cents, or 0.2% at $71.76 a barrel at 0015 GMT. U.S. crude futures for October were up 23 cents, or 0.3%, at $68.88 a barrel. Still, nearly a fifth of crude oil production and 28% of natural gas output in the Gulf of Mexico remain offline in the hurricane's aftermath. A key factor that will dominate the market this week is how aggressive a rate cut the U.S. Federal Reserve will deliver following its Sept. 17-18 meeting.

This is the first time since the October 7 attacks that Blinken has visited the Middle East without visiting Israel. The top US diplomat typically uses the visits to Israel to press the Israeli government on the critical issues surrounding the war, including the hostage and ceasefire deal. However, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has frequently rebuffed the administration in the hours and days following those meetings. The last time Blinken visited Israel, he said that Netanyahu had agreed to the “bridging proposal” meant to close to close the remaining gaps with Hamas. Blinken said earlier this month that “it’s incumbent on both parties” – Israel and Hamas – “to get to yes” on the “remaining issues” related to a ceasefire and hostage deal.

Three Israeli hostages, whose bodies were found last year in underground tunnels in Gaza, were likely killed in a military airstrike aimed at a Hamas commander, an investigation into their deaths concluded. The IDF said this was a "high probability" assessment but that it was "not possible to definitively determine" the cause of the three hostages' deaths. Both Beizer and Sherman were members of the Israeli military. Earlier this month, the IDF said it found the bodies of six hostages killed by Hamas and returned them to Israel. The IDF estimated that 101 hostages remain in Gaza.

CNN —The Israeli military says that three Israeli hostages whose bodies were recovered from Gaza in December were “most likely” killed as a result of an Israeli airstrike. The hostages were two soldiers - Corporal Nick Beiser and Sergeant Ron Sherman – and and civilian man, Eliya Toledano. “The investigation shows that the three hostages were held in the tunnel complex where Andor operated. The bodies of the three hostages were retrieved from the tunnel where Andor had been staying on December 14. Later that month Hamas claimed that the three hostages were “killed by IDF weapons.”A total of 101 hostages are still being held in Gaza, according to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a 26-year-old woman from Seattle, was shot dead Sept. 6 by an Israeli soldier during a demonstration against Israeli West Bank settlements, according to an Israeli protester who witnessed the shooting. The Israeli military said Tuesday that Eygi was likely shot “indirectly and unintentionally” by Israeli forces. The war began when Hamas-led fighters killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in an Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel. The military said the six were killed shortly before Israeli forces were to rescue them. CNN —An Israeli intelligence commander, who critics say played a pivotal role in failing to prevent the October 7 attacks, is resigning, Israel’s military told CNN. Later that month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also received sharp public criticism after he accused security chiefs in a later-deleted social media post of failing to warn him about the impending attack. In a May interview with Dr. Phil McGraw on the “Dr. We have to admit that,” Netanyahu told Dr. Phil. When asked if he held himself to that standard and failed in some way he added, “I hold myself and everyone on this.

TEL AVIV — The six hostages recently found dead in Gaza were executed by Hamas the night before Israeli forces reached the tunnel where they were being held, government officials said Tuesday night. The IDF said it reached that tunnel and made the gruesome discovery on Aug. 30. AK-47 magazines and shell casings were found nearby, Israeli officials said. "It was a hard moment to see the bloodstains on the floor," said Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, an IDF spokesperson. That's when about 1,200 people were killed in Israel and 250 people taken hostage.

The Israeli military said Tuesday that an American woman who was killed during a protest in the occupied West Bank last week was "likely" hit "unintentionally" by Israeli fire. Eygi’s family said she was peacefully demonstrating when she was killed and that video showed the bullet appeared to come from an Israeli military shooter. They had separately called for an independent U.S.-ordered investigation and said an Israeli investigation would not be enough. A Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into the 2022 killing of another American in the West Bank, veteran Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, remains ongoing. Israel refused to cooperate with the FBI's investigation and to date no one in the Israeli military has been prosecuted.

CNN —An Israeli official has floated the possibility of offering Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar safe passage out of Gaza, once all remaining hostages held in the Palestinian territory are released. On Tuesday, Hirsch elaborated on the idea in an interview with Bloomberg, saying Israel has already proposed safe passage to Sinwar. “I’m ready to provide safe passage to Sinwar, his family, whoever wants to join him,” he told Bloomberg. We want demilitarization, de-radicalization of course — a new system that will manage Gaza.”He told Bloomberg that the offer of safe passage was put on the table a day and a half ago, but did not say what the response was. Israel would be open to releasing prisoners it holds as part of any deal, he told Bloomberg.

Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has met more than 150 world leaders since becoming vice president. Still, Harris has not always been the first phone call for foreign leaders or officials looking to get a line into the White House. UkraineA month after Russia invaded Ukraine, Harris was dispatched to NATO’s eastern flank on a reassurance mission – one that also came with some sensitive diplomatic smoothing-over. For a foreign policy novice with aspirations for higher office, the war in Ukraine was a rigorous introduction to wartime diplomacy. She has vowed to continue to support Ukraine and impose costs on Russia,” an aide to the vice president said.

And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has poured cold water on US hopefulness, though Biden officials have largely refrained from criticizing him. “In my view, the less that’s said about particular issues, the better,” a senior administration official told reporters Wednesday in response to Netanyahu’s press conference. Days later, a senior administration official who briefed reporters argued that the majority of the details of a ceasefire deal – “90%” – had been agreed to by the two parties. In a detail not previously shared, the senior official said that of the 18 paragraphs in the agreement, 14 were finished and agreed to. They need to rest and refit, in case a war in the north [with Hezbollah] is going to happen,” the second senior administration official said.

At least three dozen Palestinians were killed in multiple Israeli strikes in the southern Gaza Strip, officials said Saturday, even as preparations moved ahead for high-level cease-fire talks in the Egyptian capital. The hospital received a total of 33 dead who were killed in three separate strikes in and around Khan Younis. Seventeen others were killed when a strike hit a road south of Khan Younis, including the passengers on a tuk-tuk and passers-by, Nasser Hospital said. Another strike hit a tuk-tuk east of Khan Younis, killing at least five people. First responders also recovered the bodies of 10 people from a residential block west of Khan Younis.

Noa Argamani, the freed Israeli hostage who was kidnapped from a music festival during the Oct. 7 terrorist attack and held in Gaza until June, celebrated her freedom this week by returning to the dance floor. She addressed whether a celebration was suitable when dozens of hostages remain in Gaza following the Oct. 7 attack that sparked war between Israel and Hamas militants. The party was titled "Return to Life" and featured a large graphic image of Or with the words, "We will dance again." More than 40,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its offensive in the enclave following Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attacks, local officials say. Hamas said it would head to Cairo on Saturday to meet with mediators ahead of a new round of Gaza cease-fire talks, as the United States, Qatar and Egypt push to reach an agreement they hope can stave off the growing threat of regional war. On Friday, the Israeli military announced that at least one soldier had been killed and several others were wounded in fighting in central Gaza. While U.S. officials have insisted there is progress in negotiations, the main warring parties, Israel and Hamas, have been far more pessimistic in their assessment. Negotiators have been pushing for a major summit as early as Sunday to move ahead with the talks. But the visit to Cairo leaves the door open for further talks.

The bodies returned for the final time to the villages that, in life, they had called home. Months of anguished waiting at an end, mourners embraced, wept, read tributes and lowered into the soil the remains of Israeli hostages recovered this week from the Gaza Strip. But grief had to share space with fury at Israel’s leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for not agreeing to a cease-fire with Hamas that might have saved the captives’ lives. “You were abandoned, again and again, by the prime minister and his ministers, to Hamas’s tunnels,” Keren Munder — herself a former hostage — said as she buried her father, Abraham Munder, on Wednesday in his hometown, Nir Oz. Distant explosions and crackles of gunfire occasionally interrupted her eulogy, reminders of the war between Israel and Hamas, now in its 11th month.

CNN —Months of feverish negotiations, in different cities and at multiple levels, have gotten Israel and Hamas closer to striking a ceasefire deal. “But we are committed to continue the war after the pause in order to achieve the goal of destroying Hamas. It essentially allows Israel – and Hamas – to abandon discussions after the six-week first phase and resume the war.
