An Epic Pilgrimage Across Three Great Religions
  + stars: | 2023-11-09 | by ( Aatish Taseer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +111 min
Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

Just how harmful or helpful hormone replacement therapy may be also depends on the type of hormones that are prescribed, especially at older ages. Estrogen-only hormone therapy can be prescribed if the uterus has been removed via hysterectomy. Scientists are developing a new generation of hormone replacement called selective estrogen receptor modulator, or SERM. Scientists are working on new forms of hormone replacement therapy that go directly to the brain, thus making them safer for menopausal women. In addition, some women are not candidates for hormone replacement therapy, perhaps due to family history, heart conditions or clotting disorders.

Each episode will focus on one of those states — the distracted brain, the frightened brain, the nourished brain, etc. (While her paper was published in 2021 in Nature Scientific Reports, Mosconi has kept adding women’s brain scans to her database.) She adds that what happens during menopause can have implications for brain health in later years. “Active smoking is a huge ‘no’ for both menopause but also for brain health,” she said. “Physical activity is really supportive of hormonal health and brain health,” she noted.

These are some of the activities that can be found at menopause retreats, a wellness trend carving a new niche in the tourism industry. Menopause retreats are tailored to help women navigate the different stages of perimenopause and menopause, and the array of symptoms that come with them — from hot flashes and night sweats to achy joints. Wellness retreats aren't new, of course, but ever since the pandemic, more resorts are promoting menopause-focused vacations — and more women are signing up for them. So instead of just going on a spa retreat, people started going on very specific purpose-driven retreats," Lisa Starr, a spa business consultant at Wynne Business Consulting and Education told CNBC Travel. Do menopause retreats help?

Menopause-centered offerings vary widely, from mindfulness techniques to herbal remedies to nutritional guidance and exercise. Sometimes, the most important activity is just the chance to bond with other women facing the same issues, experts say. “There’s a great healing and discovery when a group of people are going through a similar circumstance,” said Melissa Biggs Bradley, the founder and chief executive of Indagare, a membership-based travel company that recently announced its first midlife and menopause retreat. After a health screening, I was given a tailored agenda to nurture and balance my aging, changing body. First up was a personalized strength training session — squats, lunges, planks and resistance band exercises — to remedy my joint pain and build bone.

We meet Grace when she’s sitting and sweating in traffic — until, no longer able to bear it, she abandons her car and walks away. She is desperate to get to her teenager’s birthday party across town, hoping to make amends after a fight. An 11th-hour reveal — you may find it moving or manipulative — sheds light on Grace’s particular anxieties. I may be proving the author’s point by noting that her central character can be hard to root for. Try as she might, there is no way to separate your hormones from your true self.

But she was taken aback by the extent to which middle-aged women like O'Neill reported experiencing age-related discrimination at work. "When men get to their 40s or 50s, they're considered to be in the prime of their careers," Diehl told me. In one 2019 poll of 400 US workers ages 40 and older, more men than women reported experiencing or witnessing age discrimination on the job. Research has also found that older job seekers face age discrimination regardless of gender, despite a 56-year-old federal law that purportedly protects against older-age discrimination in employment. It's undeniable that workplace age discrimination occurs across gender lines, but the qualitative experiences surfaced by Diehl, Stephenson, and Dzubinski help paint a picture of how an open culture around age discrimination can ultimately end up fueling good, old-fashioned sexism.

Increased longevity is challenging people to rethink the traditional three-step life path of education, work and retirement. But one age group — individuals ages 40 to 59 — is more likely to struggle with this concept, according to new research from Transamerica and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab. "That cohort based on the study really had the toughest time and was carrying the most stress and burden about managing this concept of longevity in a positive way," said Phil Eckman, president of workplace solutions at Transamerica. Moreover, half of people in midlife are struggling to get by financially, more than other age groups studied. "One of the best ways to deal with stress is to look at that notion of health and well-being and sleep and diet and exercise and the way that can reduce stress," Eckman said.

The Unending Indignities of ‘Vaginal Atrophy’
  + stars: | 2023-08-22 | by ( Rachel E. Gross | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When Heather Corinna started a Facebook support group in 2019 for people going through menopause and perimenopause, one phrase came up again and again. Members of the group had read about it online, heard it from their doctors and seen it in their medical notes. Vaginal atrophy. Amid the many unfamiliar terms and bodily changes that people were facing, “vaginal atrophy” seemed to encapsulate a host of fears around sexuality and aging. “I mean, atrophy,” said Mx.

"You're too old to work at 35, but too young to retire at 60," one person wrote, bemoaning the "curse." It refers, specifically, to the typical Chinese employer's preference for hiring workers who haven't reached the sell-by date of their 35th birthday. And it's not just about finding work — Chinese workers being phased out at what was previously viewed as the prime of their careers means their livelihoods could be seriously affected. "At this point in time, youth unemployment is high, so many young workers are willing to work for less. Seah told Insider that increased competition for younger workers "will eventually drive up youth wages, making them relatively more expensive to hire."

Getting older doesn’t have to mean moving less. The key to longstanding fitness, experts say, is envisioning the kind of athlete you want to be 20, 30, even 40 years from now, and training smartly in the present for that future. Starting in your 30s, you lose between about 3 and 8 percent of your muscle mass per decade, and more after turning 60. Bone mineral density also starts to decline in midlife, which puts you at risk for fractures and osteoporosis. Your VO2 max, or the heart and lungs’ ability to take in oxygen and convert it into energy, decreases as well.

There's a big problem with Shopify's calculator for the true cost of meetings. Shopify's COO says the salary indicator on each meeting just reflects the average salary for the role. That means the meeting's cost won't be accurate in the first place: It's just an estimate. And Shopify has swooped in with what it says is a solution: airing the cost of meetings to scare bosses into scheduling fewer of them. If there's an hour-long meeting, everyone's hourly salary will be factored into a Google calendar invite.

HOPE, by Andrew RidkerIf for Emily Dickinson “hope” is the thing with feathers, for Andrew Ridker, in his novel called “Hope,” it’s an upstanding liberal Jewish family outside Boston, grasping at air as they plummet from grace. Think Harvard-educated physician father, socially conscious Brookline mother and young adult offspring struggling to self-actualize. He does this for the money: The green energy start-up he invested in has failed, and his octogenarian mother, Marjorie, needs help paying for an elite retirement community. In different ways, the books explore American males overseas (here, Israel and Syria) and do-gooderism gone wrong. They jump smoothly around in time (“Hope” takes place over a year in the Obama era) and skillfully enter the viewpoint of all main characters, lending each depth and humanity.

Sleep Better at Every Age
  + stars: | 2023-07-07 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +47 min
Sleep training, the process of teaching babies how to soothe themselves at night and sleep independently, can start when infants are 3 to 4 months old. While sleep training can be taxing for everyone involved, it can lead to better sleep for the whole household. If your child is struggling to sleep through the night at this age, consider talking to a pediatrician about possible solutions. The problem: Insomnia can strike at any age: Around 20 percent of children have difficulty falling or staying asleep. Plus, the older we get, the harder it is to bounce back from a night of poor sleep, Dr. Roth said.

But Shopify's logistics acquisitions, which came with around 550 more staff altogether, started to look like dead weight after the shine of the initial announcements wore off. By the beginning of 2023, the attitude toward logistics inside Shopify had shifted to palpable frustration, four people who worked for Shopify's logistics division said. Lance McMillan/Toronto Star via Getty ImagesIndependent of logistics, Shopify saw massive cultural shifts in the past several years. One core tenet of Shopify's work culture is "default to open," meaning it values transparency and sharing information with employees. The letter referred to Shopify's logistics work of the past four years as a "side quest" that distracted the company from its "main quest."
