After weeks of speculation, Vice President Kamala Harris, endorsed by President Biden to succeed him as the Democratic presidential candidate this fall, will have a bench of new-generation party leaders to turn to when she moves toward the first critical decision of her candidacy: picking a running mate. By now, the list of possibilities is fairly well known: Democrats who had already seemed like potential presidential contenders in 2028 or as potential candidates themselves this year. It is too soon to know if Ms. Harris will go unchallenged for her party’s nomination. Ms. Harris, 59, could be inclined to turn to someone from a swing state that the party needs to win. She is also likely to turn to a male running mate, Democrats said, to give the ticket balance; again, though, nothing is certain since the bench includes several women.

CNN —Thousands of people took to the streets to protest against mass tourism on the island of Mallorca on Sunday as pushback against holidaymakers in Spain continued. ET) according to organizers Menys Turisme, Mas Vida (Less Tourism, More Life), although police put the figure at around 12,000, RTVE reported. Juan Medina/ReutersThe demonstration included around 110 groups and social movements, according to Spanish public broadcaster RTVE. It came amid growing tensions over the impact of tourism on local areas in Spain. In April, a hunger strike was called by locals in the Spanish Canary Islands, protesting against excessive tourism, which protesters said is pricing out locals and leading to environmental damage.

Now that President Biden has withdrawn from the presidential race, the question facing the Democratic Party is no longer whether he can be replaced at the top of the ticket. The process is complicated and opens the door to political upheaval between now and August, when Democratic delegates will gather at their convention to vote for a nominee. Mr. Biden has the power to release all the pledged delegates he accumulated. When he does so, those delegates will be free to vote for whomever they choose. But there appears to be two ways this can go, based on interviews with Democratic Party leaders and strategists.

Amber Rose, an OnlyFans model, influencer and former girlfriend to rappers, took the stage at the Republican National Convention on Monday night sporting her platinum buzz cut and face tattoo. Ms. Rose, the author of a book titled “How to Be a Bad Bitch,” told the overwhelmingly white crowd that she once believed “left-wing propaganda that Donald Trump was a racist.” But now, she said, she had “put the red hat on, too.”“These are my people,” she said. “This is where I belong.”As if to underscore the point, Ms. Rose appeared on the giant screens at the convention hall again the next night. This time it was in a music video for “Trump Trump Baby,” a remix of Vanilla Ice’s 1990s hit, “Ice Ice Baby,” performed by Forgiato Blow, a self-described MAGA rapper. Ms. Rose wore a hefty gold chain with a medallion of Mr. Trump’s face.

Former President Donald J. Trump began his prime-time speech at the Republican National Convention on Thursday with a message of unity, presenting a softer image of himself that appeared aimed at courting undecided voters. But then he went on for an hour and a half, a long verbal walk through the kinds of exaggerations about his record and attacks on Democrats that have become familiar to voters from Mr. Trump’s previous two campaigns and presidency. For a group of undecided voters from around the country, who are sharing their thoughts on key moments in the race with The New York Times, the effect was not strong. Some found the speech off-putting. “I still don’t know what I’m going to do,” said Sharon Reed, 77, a retired teacher-turned-farmer in rural Pennsylvania who previously voted for Mr. Trump but is torn this year.

Mourners prepared to gather on Friday in a corner of western Pennsylvania to say their final goodbyes to Corey Comperatore, the father of two who was killed during an attempt to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump at a rally last weekend. The funeral was set to take place at 11 a.m. at the church in Cabot, Pa., where Mr. Comperatore, 50, was a longtime member. Mr. Comperatore’s life revolved around this small pocket of Pennsylvania: He grew up in Sarver and still lived there with his high school sweetheart and two daughters. He attended church in Cabot and graduated from high school in nearby Freeport. People here are not accustomed to crowds, but crowds are what they have spent the week preparing for as Mr. Comperatore has been thrust into the national spotlight.

CNN —Sealed bottles of tattoo and permanent makeup ink, including some marked as sterile, contained millions of potentially dangerous bacteria, according to new research by the US Food and Drug Administration. Earlier studies have found high levels of bacterial contamination within sealed and sterile bottles of ink. Unfortunately, the study’s findings were not surprising, said John Swierk, an assistant professor of chemistry at Binghamton University, State University of New York, who has studied tattoo ink contamination. For example, using the same gloves to touch a client and the ink bottle is a hazard that can lead to tattoo ink contamination. “Tattoo inks are in the process of being regulated due to the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (of 2022) but much of that law dealing with tattoo inks has yet to be implemented,” Swierk said.

CNN —Kylian Mbappé was officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player in front of tens of thousands of fans at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday. Los Blancos announced last month that the club had signed Mbappé to a five-year deal, ending the French superstar’s seven-year stint at Paris Saint-Germain. This has been a highly-anticipated moment for Real Madrid fans, who have long been hopeful of seeing the 25-year-old – rated among the best current players in the world – wear their club’s famous white jersey. “It’s an incredible day for me, incredible,” the forward told those inside the stadium. Also on Tuesday, Real announced that Mbappé had successfully completed his medical at the Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Moraleja in Madrid.

Gerardo Medina runs the Taquería Los Amigos, a 24-hour stand that sits at a busy intersection in an upscale neighborhood in Mexico City. With more customers from abroad eating his tacos, he began noticing similar reactions to his pico de gallo: red faces, sweat, complaints about the spiciness. So Mr. Medina, 30, got rid of the serrano peppers, leaving just tomatoes, onions and cilantro. While he still offers an avocado salsa with serrano and a red salsa with morita chiles and chiles de árbol, he wanted to provide a non-spicy option for international visitors unaccustomed to intense heat.

Jeanne Winograd, 72, a Democrat in Phoenix, is such a ride-or-die fan of President Biden that, on Valentine’s Day, she mailed him a card to say his vigor, not his age, would shape the presidential election. But after a week of panic attacks after his dismal debate performance, she felt compelled to send him another card. This one said: Thanks for everything, but it’s time to go. “I just love Biden, but he’s frail,” Ms. Winograd said. In 80 interviews at Independence Day parades, pie-eating contests and political events this holiday in the political battlegrounds of Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin and North Carolina, more than half of voters who had supported Mr. Biden in 2020 now said he should drop out of the race.

Top Democrats scrambled on Sunday to defend President Biden and dismiss concerns about his candidacy that surfaced after he struggled to answer policy questions in Thursday’s debate and failed to make an aggressive case against former President Donald J. Trump. The surge of surrogates followed a concerted effort by Mr. Biden and his team over the weekend to reassure anxious donors, party leaders and supporters who have raised questions about whether he should continue his candidacy. “Listen, if they weren’t engaged in a little bit of hand-wringing, they wouldn’t be Democrats,” Senator Raphael Warnock, Democrat of Georgia, said on NBC News. In interviews on several TV networks, Mr. Warnock and other Democrats offered versions of the same argument: that Mr. Biden should be judged not on his performance in a 90-minute debate but on his record as president over the past three and a half years, and that voters should give more weight to Mr. Trump’s numerous false statements in the debate and to his continued indications that he would not accept an election loss.

There are 28 days until the Summer Olympics opening ceremony, and tests from the historic Seine River show the water is still at dangerous contamination levels for E. coli, which is often linked to fecal bacteria. AdvertisementAlong with the triathlon events, marathon swimmers are scheduled to dive into the river for their events. The three triathlon events will span from July 30 to Aug. 5, while the marathon swimming races will be on Aug. 8 and 9. The latest findings marked the third consecutive week that samples from the river had unsafe levels of bacteria related to fecal matter. Both have said they plan on swimming in the river themselves to prove its cleanliness.

They started the night hoping that President Biden would use the first debate of 2024 to his advantage, that he would finally quash fears about his age and give the impression of a determined statesman compared with former President Donald J. Trump. But for the roughly 40 Democrats who gathered Thursday night at a union hall in Sacramento, it did not take long for the mood to descend into something between grim despair and mild panic. Within minutes, even ardent supporters in the capital of California fell silent, exchanging glances and acknowledging quietly that Mr. Biden, his virtues aside, seemed less forceful than Mr. Trump, and weary. Toward the end, some of the younger attendees left before the debate was over. “Neither of them inspires confidence,” said Dubrea Sanders, 25.

A once politically far-fetched question — can President Biden be replaced at the top of the Democratic Party presidential ticket — has taken on new urgency after Mr. Biden’s halting debate performance against former President Donald J. Trump. The short answer is yes — assuming Mr. Biden decides on his own to step aside. But if Mr. Biden decides not to step aside, the short answer is probably no. Mr. Biden has the power to leave the race and release all the pledged delegates he has accumulated — 3,894 of 3,937 committed so far, according to a tally by The Associated Press — during his march to the nomination. If he were to do so, those delegates would be free to vote for whomever they chose.

He was among the more than 1,300 pilgrims who died during this year’s Hajj as temperatures in Saudi Arabia reached record levels. The tragedy, resulting in one of the highest Hajj death tolls in years, has brought attention to the shadowy industry of unauthorized pilgrimage agents. It is unclear how many unauthorized pilgrims made it to this year’s Hajj, but Saudi news outlet Al Sharq Al Awsat reported Tuesday that 141,000 such pilgrims received free medical treatment during the Hajj season. Clamping down on unauthorized pilgrimageBefore this year’s Hajj season started, Saudi authorities warned pilgrims against using agents selling unauthorized Hajj packages and had been in contact with other governments in an effort to crack down on the trend. Authorities had also arrested some illegal agents and issued warnings about penalties for those found to assist unauthorized pilgrims.

MECCA, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Hundreds of people died during this year's Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia as the faithful faced intense high temperatures at Islamic holy sites in the desert kingdom, officials said Wednesday as people tried to claim their loved ones' bodies. Saudi Arabia has not commented on the death toll amid the heat during the pilgrimage, required of every able Muslim once in their life, nor offered any causes for those who died. Already, several countries have said some of their pilgrims died because of the heat that swept across the holy sites at Mecca, including Jordan and Tunisia. More than 1.83 million Muslims performed the Hajj in 2024, including more than 1.6 million pilgrims from 22 countries, and around 222,000 Saudi citizens and residents, according to the Saudi Hajj authorities. Saudi Arabia has never acknowledged the full toll of the stampede.
