New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union is seeking a union representation vote among more than 4,000 hourly workers at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The union has announced a broad-based campaign to win representation at the American plants of 13 nonunion automakers. That is slightly more than the union’s representation at the three unionized automakers, which have about 145,000 UAW members between them. The VW Chattanooga plant is the only factory operated by VW that does not have union representation. Once the election process starts, management often holds mandatory meetings with staff to make the case against union representation, and that convinces some earlier supporters of the union to end their support.

Read previewJapanese and Korean carmakers cracked the US market long ago — but don't expect Chinese EV seller BYD to repeat that feat. Advertisement"It'd be very difficult for a Chinese EV maker to enter the US market," Seth Goldstein, an equity strategist at Morningstar, told Business Insider. The bill, a key part of US President Joe Biden's economic agenda, offers tax credits worth up to $7,500 for EV makers, excluding any "Foreign Entity of Concern." BYD isn't the only company turning its back on the US EV market. Given that EV sales growth is stalling in US, it's perhaps little wonder companies like BYD are not too bothered.

Hybrid vehicles led the 2024 top vehicle rankings released Tuesday by influential product testing organization Consumer Reports. Such "electrified" vehicles, including plug-in hybrid models, represented six of the top 10 picks by the nonprofit consumer organization. Toyota's four vehicles in the top 10 rankings were all hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicles. Both hybrids and plug-in hybrids have a traditional engine combined with EV technologies. Plug-in hybrids typically have a larger battery to provide for all-electric driving for a certain number of miles until an engine is needed to power the vehicle or electric motors.

A red Mazda sped past a police officer’s unmarked car stationed at a tree-lined Staten Island intersection. The officer inside, Mathew Bianchi, clocked the Mazda at well over the limit and prepared to make a stop at a nearby streetlight. Bianchi had been instructed to let card carriers off without a ticket. By the time he pulled over the Mazda in November 2018, drivers were handing Bianchi these cards six or seven times a day. So Bianchi did the wrong thing, which is to say, the right thing: He wrote the woman a ticket.

On Saturday, the agency posted documents showing that BMW is recalling 486 SUVs after the Chicago driver was hurt. At least 26 people have been killed in the U.S. by Takata inflators since May 2009, and at least 30 have died worldwide including people in Malaysia and Australia. About 100 million inflators were recalled worldwide. Automakers, he said, blamed manufacturing problems to limit recalls when the non-desiccated Takata inflators started to have problems. In the BMW recall, dealers will replace the air bags at no cost to owners, who will be notified by letter starting Jan. 16.

DETROIT (AP) — BMW is recalling a small number of SUVs in the U.S. because the driver's air bag inflators can blow apart in a crash, hurling metal shrapnel and possibly injuring or killing people in the vehicles. "To all the auto workers out there working without the benefits of a union, now it's your turn," UAW President Shawn Fain said in a video posted on a website urging auto workers to sign electronic cards seeking union representation. The UAW for decades has unsuccessfully sought to organize auto factories operated by foreign automakers. The website asks Tesla workers to join, saying CEO "Elon Musk is the richest man in the world, with a net worth of $230 billion. The question is, will Tesla workers get their fair share?"

The United Auto Workers union is launching an unprecedented campaign to organize 13 non-union automakers in the U.S. after securing record contracts with the Detroit automakers. As part of the campaign workers are signing electronic cards in support of union efforts to potentially organize U.S. plants from those automakers. It is not guaranteed that the union would push to organize every plant or automaker that participates in the campaign. UAW President Shawn Fain has said the union's next mission after ratifying record contracts with General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis was to expand its ranks. Still, the UAW has a poor track record with trying to organize non-Detroit automakers.

DETROIT (AP) — Less than two weeks after ratifying new contracts with Detroit automakers, the United Auto Workers union announced plans Wednesday to try to simultaneously organize workers at more than a dozen nonunion auto factories. The UAW says the drive will cover nearly 150,000 workers at factories largely in the South, where the union has had little success in recruiting new members. Also on the union's list are U.S. factories run by electric vehicle sales leader Tesla, as well as EV startups Rivian and Lucid. “You don’t have to live paycheck to paycheck,” union President Shawn Fain said in a statement appealing to nonunion workers. At the end of the contract top-scale assembly workers will make about $42 per hour, plus they’ll get annual profit-sharing checks.

UAW aims to organize 13 nonunion automakers

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union says it has started an effort to organize workers at 13 non-union automakers with US factories. The union said there are about 150,000 employees at 36 nonunion auto plants operated by the companies it is targeting in this campaign. That is slightly more than the union’s representation at the three unionized automakers, which have about 145,000 UAW members between them. But if a union organizing campaign is successful, the union will be made up of workers from the company. The union has filed complaints accusing many of the automakers of unfair labor practices during those earlier organizing efforts.

The United Automobile Workers union announced Wednesday that it was undertaking an ambitious drive to organize plants owned by more than a dozen nonunion automakers, including Tesla and several foreign companies — a goal that has long eluded it. The move comes weeks after the U.A.W. In addition to Tesla, the targets of the drive are two other electric vehicle start-ups, Lucid and Rivian, and 10 foreign-owned automakers: Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, Volkswagen, Mazda and Volvo. If the U.A.W. secures a foothold among those companies, it could signal a big shift in the American auto industry, where nonunion manufacturers have long had a significant cost advantage over the Detroit automakers.

2024 Mazda3 Hatchback: A High-Octane Debate

HUSTLE BUSTLE The 2024 Mazda3 Hatchback (base MSRP $25,690, with front-wheel drive) offers a choice of two turbocharged 2.5-liter engines, one producing 191 hp and the other producing either 227 hp (regular gas) or 250 hp (premium). Photo: MazdaTHE NEXT TIME you put gas in your car, if you still do, take note of the filler flap, where some manufacturers specify the use of premium fuel. Considering the price difference between regular and premium—in my home state of North Carolina last week, 78 cents per gallon—that’s a pretty big ask. The 2024 Mazda3 Hatchback Turbo Premium Plus doesn’t insist that you buy premium. If you put regular gas in the Mazda , you will feel a maximum of 227 hp under your haunches; if premium, the figure jumps to 250 hp.

It’s a message ringing clear at the Tokyo Mobility Show, which will run through Nov. 5 at Tokyo Big Sight hall and where battery-powered electric vehicles are the star at practically every booth. Toyota Motor Corp.’s lean angular Lexus concept, set to go on sale in 2026, is an electric vehicle running on lithium-ion batteries. That is partly because of Toyota’s past success in hybrids, exemplified in the Prius, which have a gasoline engine in addition to an electric motor. In China, a third of vehicles sold are EVs. Nissan, an early EV maker among the Japanese with its Leaf going on sale in 2010, is showcasing four EV concept cars.

Toyota Motor Corporation's cars are seen at a briefing on the company's strategies on battery EVs in Tokyo, Japan December 14, 2021. The Japan Mobility Show, which opens on Thursday, comes at a critical moment for the domestic industry. Toyota (7203.T), the world's top-selling automaker, this year announced a strategic pivot to battery EVs, including plans to commercialise advanced batteries and adopt die-casting technology pioneered by Tesla (TSLA.O). Toyota's shift has helped silence criticism that it was too slow to embrace battery EVs. CNN —Toyota has joined the growing list of automakers that have decided to switch to using Tesla’s charging standard. Beginning in 2025 all Toyota electric vehicles sold in the US will have charging ports designed to work with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), rather than the Combined Charging System plugs automakers in the US now use. Toyota’s announcement means that all of America’s best-selling automakers — Toyota ranks second only to General Motors in US sales — have agreed to switch to Tesla’s standard in the next few years. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk announced in November of last year that he was inviting other automakers and charging companies to adopt Tesla’s NACS. Major charging companies have announced they will offer both types of cables to service electric vehicles with either type of charging port.
