CNN —Sweden has summoned Iran’s acting ambassador to protest against the execution of Habib Chaab, a dual Swedish-Iranian national who had been convicted of leading an Arab separatist group accused of attacks. “The death penalty is an inhuman and irreversible punishment and Sweden, together with the rest of the EU, condemns its use under any circumstances,” the Swedish Foreign Ministry said in a statement Saturday. Chaab was executed on Saturday morning over his alleged involvement with the Harakat al-Nidal separatist group, reported Mizan, an Iranian state-affiliated media outlet. Iran considers Harakat al-Nidal to be a terrorist group. Postponing the civil case would "preserve the integrity" of the ongoing prosecution by preventing the defendants from seeing the extent of the government's evidence against them, federal prosecutors argued in the filing. The SEC and the attorneys for the suspects consented to the request, which is common in such cases. A telephone conference is scheduled in the criminal case for Dec. 14, but it's expected to be mostly procedural and an opportunity for the prosecutors and defense attorneys to update the judge on the status of the litigation.

A Dutch court sentenced three men to life in prison over the downing of passenger jet MH17 in 2014. The plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine by a Russian-made missile, and nearly 300 people were killed. Two Russians and a pro-Moscow Ukrainian separatist were convicted, but they're fugitives. Given that the convicted are currently fugitives, the three men may never be apprehended and serve their time in prison, the report said. The missile was provided by Russia's military to pro-Moscow separatist forces, the Dutch court confirmed.

Decades later, prosecutors should be thinking about whether that same statute could be used against former President Donald Trump, his inner circle and even Giuliani himself. First, there was an allegedly criminal effort to win the presidency, including through a foreign-influence campaign. Third, there was the allegedly criminal effort to monetize the presidency, including by using Trump’s hotels and golf clubs in ways that may constitute corruption.
