In terms of the Electoral College, Trump is on track to win 312 electoral votes if his lead in Arizona holds. It would be a better showing than either his or Joe Biden’s 306 electoral votes in 2016 and 2020, respectively. But it would be far short of Barack Obama’s 365 electoral votes in 2008 and 332 in 2012. Bill Clinton never reached 50% in the popular vote because both of his presidential elections featured a strong third-party candidate in Ross Perot. But Clinton did run away with the Electoral College vote, winning 370 electoral votes in 1992 and 379 in 1996.

Some Uber and Lyft drivers are striking deals with passengers for rides outside the apps. AdvertisementSome drivers for rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are offering passengers an alternative: Ditch the apps entirely, agree on a price, and pay them in cash or through an app like Venmo. But some rideshare drivers' pay is considerably lower than that — as little as $9 an hour, BI previously reported. AdvertisementRideshare drivers told BI that they often make less than half of what riders pay for the trip. One Uber driver in Massachusetts shared screenshots of a recent Uber trip that cost the rider about $156 — and paid the driver roughly $74 after Uber deducted its share plus taxes.

Newsom is far from the only Democratic governor preparing to take on Trump. In blue states like Illinois, Massachusetts and New York, officials are already vowing to mount legal and policy fights against the incoming Trump administration on issues like abortion rights, environmental regulations, gun control, immigration enforcement and more. But the second Trump era will offer Democratic officials opportunities to showcase their own leadership as they position themselves for potential future runs. A less combative toneSome Democratic governors, including those widely seen as potential 2028 presidential contenders, did not immediately take aim at Trump’s incoming administration. “Finally, let’s root for the success of the new administration and keep working together to get things done.”Pennsylvania Gov.

A cadre of blue-state governors is already preparing a litany of political and legal moves to shield their states’ policies and residents from federal actions under Donald Trump's new administration. In California, Gov. A spokesperson for Trump didn’t immediately respond to questions about how Democratic governors are responding to his return to the White House. Phil Murphy pledged to both push back against Trump when necessary, while also seeking out areas for compromise. “If it’s contrary to our values, we will fight to the death,” Murphy said at a Wednesday press conference, mentioning issues such as immigration and reproductive rights.

At least 1,017 out LGBTQ candidates ran for election this year, a 1.1% increase compared with 2020, according to the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, a political organization that tracks and supports LGBTQ candidates for elected office. The LGBTQ+ Victory Fund endorsed and tracked 477 of the LGBTQ candidates who made it to the general election. As of Friday afternoon, about three-quarters of those races had been called, with LGBTQ candidates having a success rate of approximately 80%. LGBTQ candidates won elections to at least 37 state legislatures this year, according to the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, and several were historic firsts. “Having LGBTQ+ candidates in the halls of power will be paramount in helping to protect and uphold pro-equality values,” Meloy said.

The reality is that both parties learn lessons from losing elections that apply only in the short term — say, from one presidential election to the next midterm or from one midterm to the next presidential election. Not anymore — it’s why Democrats usually overperform in special elections, with more devoted “every election” voters right now. Meanwhile, in the non-battlegrounds, which were more affected by the basic “mood music” of the election, Democrats were shellacked. The seeds of discontent with this version of the Democratic Party can be traced back a decade to Obama’s decision to anoint Hillary Clinton as his successor. Gavin Newsom, a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, on Thursday called for lawmakers to convene a special session later this year to safeguard the state’s progressive policies on climate change, reproductive rights and immigration ahead of another Trump presidency. The move — a day after the former president resoundingly defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race — effectively reignited California’s resistance campaign against conservative policies that state Democratic leaders started during the first Trump administration. California’s move is part of a growing discussion among Democratic state officials across the country seeking to protect policies that face threats under Trump’s leadership. Newsom and Democratic lawmakers said they are acting now to shield the state’s policies that have made it a leader in the nation. “He wants to be seen as a political revivalist, and so that puts him front and center,” McCuan said.

Especially when such a small amount may improve your blood pressure, according to a new study. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 15,000 people who wore activity monitors and had their blood pressure tracked, according to the study published Wednesday in the journal Circulation. As little as five more minutes a day of exercise was associated with lower blood pressure, and just 10 to 20 minutes more as linked to a clinically meaningful change in blood pressure (defined as a reduction of 2mmHg of systolic blood pressure or 1mmHg of diastolic blood pressure), Blodgett said. Even five minutes more of exercise is associated with lower blood pressure, the study said. The answer for better blood pressure may be more than just a walk in the park, however.

Read’s attorneys argue she is being framed and that other law enforcement officers are responsible for O’Keefe’s death. A judge declared a mistrial in June after finding jurors couldn’t reach an agreement. The defense also arguing that the judge abruptly announced the mistrial in court without first asking each juror to confirm their conclusions about each count. The court never asked for counsel’s views, or even mentioned the word mistrial.”In August, a judge ruled Read can be retried on those charges. The defense portrayed Read as the victim, saying O’Keefe was actually killed inside Albert’s home and then dragged outside.

Former Sen. Kelly Ayotte has won the New Hampshire governor’s race, NBC News projects, defeating Democrat Joyce Craig to keep the seat in Republican hands. Ayotte will succeed Republican Gov. Ayotte lost her re-election battle in 2016 to now-Sen. Maggie Hassan, a Democrat, by only about a thousand votes. She got her start in politics by serving on the Board of School Committee in Manchester, before serving as an alderman for six years. Craig and Ayotte won their parties’ primaries in September, leaving them with only about eight weeks to campaign in the general election period.

Trump has been declared the winner in ten states, including Florida, while Harris has won seven. AdvertisementPolls have now closed in the key swing states of Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Each state gets a set number of votes that correlates with its population — if a state has two US senators and three House members, it has five electoral votes. The winner must get at least 270 electoral votes — a majority of the 538 total. She has generally polled better in these states than the Sun Belt states of Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, and North Carolina.

Many state governments in the U.S. are working with less room in their budgets. The federal government put over $800 billion to help state governments navigate the pandemic. Virtually every state also increased employee pay for public employees," said Justin Theal, a senior officer at The Pew Charitable Trusts' Fiscal 50 project. Emerging risks, including an aging population, deferred maintenance on infrastructure and more extreme weather threaten state budgets moving forward. Boston AP —A jury on Tuesday found an Alabama man not guilty of killing an 11-year New Hampshire girl more than 35 years ago. “I recognize the work and dedication of the jury during their long deliberations in this case,” Tucker said. The body of the Salem, New Hampshire, girl was found in a Lawrence, Massachusetts, trainyard on Sept. 12, 1988, a day after she was reported missing. The family, in statement, said they respected the process but believe McClendon was still guilty of murder based on the DNA results. Strasnick told the jury that the DNA evidence taken from under Tremblay’s fingernails excludes 99.8% of the male population.

As millions of Americans cast ballots on election day, advisors are bracing for major tax changes that could be on the horizon. Enacted by former President Donald Trump, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, or TCJA, brought sweeping changes for individuals, including lower tax brackets, higher standard deductions, a more generous child tax credit and a bigger estate and gift tax exemption, among others. Many of the individual TCJA provisions will sunset after 2025 without action from Congress, which will be a key issue for the next president, policy experts say. However, planning can be complicated with several tax provisions scheduled to sunset, experts say.

This proposal would gradually raise the tipped minimum wage over a five-year period, starting with an increase to 64 percent of the state minimum wage on Jan. 1, 2025 and ending with a match to 100% on Jan. 1, 2029.
AdvertisementThis Election Day, minimum wage workers in four states are waiting to learn if they'll get a raise. The minimum wage in Massachusetts is $15 an hour, and the tipped minimum wage is $6.75. If Massachusetts' question 5 passes, the tipped wage would slowly increase to become level with the state minimum wage, reaching full parity by 2029.
