), who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said America needs a confirmed ambassador to Israel as soon as possible. President Biden's nominee, Jack Lew, a former Treasury secretary and White House chief of staff during the Obama administration, is set for a confirmation hearing on Wednesday. "I will do everything I can not only to have a hearing but to move him out of committee on the floor of the United States Senate because we do need a confirmed ambassador of Israel," Cardin said Tuesday. He said he wants to "make sure that's a reality as soon as possible." Some Republicans have expressed opposition to Lew and could try to slow walk the nomination.

REUTERS/Tom Brenner/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Democratic U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Monday the Senate will seek within days to pass a resolution supporting Israel, approve additional funds for Israel and confirm a new U.S. ambassador to the Jewish State. "That means military assistance, intelligence assistance, diplomatic assistance and humanitarian assistance to care for innocent civilians. Schumer said he thought Senate passage of a strong pro-Israel legislation might encourage the House of Representatives to act, despite its leadership impasse. Schumer called Lew "capable and strong" and urged the committee to approve Lew as soon as possible, so the full Senate can confirm him "in all due haste."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department said Monday that at least nine American citizens have been killed in the weekend Hamas attacks on Israel, raising the toll from four. It was not clear whether the missing had been taken hostage, were killed or were in hiding. The attack by Hamas and Israel's response have left more than 1,100 dead and thousands wounded on both sides. The White House has received assurances that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will push forward hearings for Lew, the official added. But the Israeli government formally declared war Sunday and gave the green light for “significant military steps” to retaliate against Hamas.

But should the vote drag on in the intensely divided chamber, some lawmakers warn that efforts to provide assistance to Israel amid the conflict would be stymied. Since McCarthy’s ouster, two candidates have formally announced their bid for the speakership – House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio. Accordingly, questions about the role of Rep. Patrick McHenry, who stepped in as “speaker pro tempore” after McCarthy’s historic ouster, have begun circulating. The position is widely considered to be a placeholder with the primary function of helping the chamber to elect a new speaker. But some experts have argued the House can vote on resolutions, like one condemning Hamas, without a speaker.

The White House has been working urgently in the past 24 hours to get a Senate confirmation process in motion for President Joe Biden's nominee to be U.S. ambassador to Israel, according to two White House officials. But the White House officials said they hope lawmakers in both parties will agree with the president on the need to quickly confirm Lew amid the war between Israel and Hamas. "Everyone understands the importance behind it," one White House official said. Tom Nides, Biden's former ambassador to Israel, told NBC News in an interview that the Senate needs to confirm his successor "immediately" upon return. One official said Lew is "eager" to get to work, and the White House hopes he is confirmed with bipartisan support.

A senior administration official said that the recent dysfunction in Congress, including the vacant speakership, had been the topic of discussion at the White House with regard to options for assisting Israel. “Without a speaker of the House, that is a unique situation we're gonna have to work through,” the official said while noting there was also a role for the Senate to play should emergency assistance for Israel be needed. The Biden administration’s nominee for Ambassador to Israel, Jacob Lew, has yet to be confirmed by the Senate.

Mandatory Credit: Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 29 (Reuters) - National Football League players who bet on NFL games will face harsher penalties under the league's revised gambling policy, according to a memo obtained by Reuters on Friday. Players who bet on games involving their own teams will face a minimum two-year suspension, while betting on any NFL game will result in a minimum one-year suspension. The league said it was working with the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) to develop a program educating players on changes to the policy. "The NFL and NFL Players Association share a longstanding and unwavering commitment to protecting the integrity of the game," the league and NFLPA said in a joint statement. Several NFL players have faced punishment for gambling over the last two years, as sports betting has become legal in more U.S. states and been made increasingly accessible.

The NFL kicks off the first of this season's international games on Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London before the series shifts for the first time to Frankfurt for two games starting Nov. 5. NFL Europe, which began in 1991 with 10 teams, shuttered in 2007 and was replaced by regular season NFL games starting with a contest at Wembley in October 2007. "It may have been back at the very first game at Wembley, but now this is a really educated fanbase." About 82% of tickets sold for two London games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next month went to fans in the United Kingdom, the NFL said. "There's a pathway to 150 foreign born players in the NFL in the not so distant future," he said.

A growing legal headache for early frontrunner Donald Trump could pave the way for a "dark horse" Republican presidential candidate to win the backing of the party in the race for the White House. That's the view of one former U.S. ambassador ahead of the Republican Party's second televised presidential debate on Wednesday evening. The former president, who skipped the first Republican Party presidential debate in Wisconsin last month, boasts a lead of more than 40 points over his nearest competition, according to a recent national NBC News poll. Trump has said he doesn't plan to take part in the second Republican debate on Wednesday evening and will instead deliver a speech to autoworkers in Detroit. Republican Party donors have encouraged Youngkin to enter the race and challenge Trump's sizable lead in the polls.

For decades, Casey Wasserman has insisted that he would never enter the traditional entertainment business. Film and TV felt too incestuous — his grandfather, Lew Wasserman, reigned as Hollywood’s power broker from the 1960s to the 1990s — and too financially challenged, he would say. Never say never: Mr. Wasserman, 49, on Monday announced that his sports-centered conglomerate, Wasserman, had finalized a deal to buy Brillstein Entertainment Partners, a Hollywood management firm and content production company. Brillstein represents stars like Brad Pitt, Tiffany Haddish, Adam Sandler, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek and Elizabeth Olsen. The trend continued upward, so much so that by 1999 some universities had admissions policies that explicitly favored men. In doing so, the school managed to maintain a ratio of 45 percent men to 55 percent women. The young women’s lawyers argued that the extra points for men violated both the equal-protection clause and Title IX, which guarantees equal educational opportunities for men and women. But Title IX does not prohibit gender-based affirmative action in admissions at all schools. That Title IX exemption still stands, allowing private colleges and universities to privilege men during the admissions process.

President Biden announced on Tuesday that he would nominate former Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew as his next ambassador to Israel, tapping a low-key Washington veteran for a high-charged post at a time of friction with America’s strongest ally in the Middle East. If he is confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Lew will head to Jerusalem even as Mr. Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are at odds over the president’s efforts to negotiate a new nuclear agreement with Iran and the prime minister’s plans to rein in the authority of the judiciary in Israel. Mr. Biden has sought to smooth over the rifts with Mr. Netanyahu by inviting him to visit the United States, an invitation the president had declined to issue for months. At the same time, Mr. Biden has embarked on a high-stakes diplomatic gamble to broker normalized relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, a move that if successful could transform the power dynamics of the region. Mr. Biden’s envoys have been negotiating with the Saudis while keeping the Israelis informed about the progress, but the challenges for reaching such an accord remain daunting.

Jack Lew, former U.S. Treasury secretary, listens at a panel discussion during the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington, D.C., April 19, 2018. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden nominated former U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Tuesday to serve as ambassador to Israel. Lew, 68, served as treasury secretary between 2013 and 2017. He was also the White House budget director and later chief of staff during the Obama administration and budget director during the Clinton administration. Lew's nomination comes during a period of strained relations between the U.S. and Israel after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's judicial overhaul this summer, a move that led to months of protests.

A consortium led by Francisco Partners and private equity group TPG will take software provider New Relic private in an all-cash, $87-a-share offer that values the company at nearly $6.5 billion, the company announced Monday. Reuters reported in May that Francisco Partners and TPG had ended deal talks after failing to secure enough debt financing to meet New Relic's desired valuation. Since that report, the private equity groups were able to obtain financing and meet New Relic's valuation requirements. Under the terms of the deal, New Relic will have a 45-day "go-shop" period, during which it can entertain offers from other qualified bidders.
