But what if you paid extra for a window seat or extra legroom? There's a heated discussion doing the rounds on social media about when you should switch seats, and under what circumstances you should refuse. Proceed with cautionSome travelers have been sharing their experiences on social media, saying that caution should be exercised when someone asks to switch seats because people "don't always have the best intentions." Airlines offer options to choose seats in advance, so it's good practice for passengers to get in the habit of planning ahead. "From a glass of fizz, to extra pillows and blankets, or maybe some treats from a premium cabin if available."

Delta Air Lines said Monday that it will bring its premium economy service to transcontinental flights in September, its latest attempt to boost sales of higher-priced tickets to customers willing to splurge for more space and perks. Premium economy is a relatively new class of service that major airlines offer on longer, mostly international flights. Delta customers who purchase standard economy tickets will be able to pay for upgrades to premium economy on the transcontinental flights. The seats were sold as extra legroom tickets, which are a rung below premium economy. Some American Airlines ' shorter domestic flights operate a similar model, featuring lie-flat seats but not the Flagship service offered on international flights.

On a recent trip to Japan, I upgraded my flight home from Tokyo to Washington, DC, from economy to premium economy, which the airline calls Premium Plus. Here's why the $300 flight upgrade was worth it. I didn't have that much time to make my connecting flight, so being able to get off the plane quickly was worth the upgrade. Economy seats only have 9-inch screens. I'd pay to upgrade my flight again, especially for long-haul tripsThe $300 upgrade was worth it for my long-haul flight from Tokyo to Washington, DC.

While I dread these altercations, I think some passengers need to chill out — people have the right to recline their seat. So, you’d think that 150 lighter seats per flight will certainly save an airline a ton of money. A lighter seat that doesn’t recline is also a seat that is less likely to break, which saves an airline money in repairs. But after 28 years in the job, I’ve found there’s some basic reclining etiquette that makes for a smoother flight for everyone. But on coach, middle seat passengers struggle to type because there’s no arm space.

The accommodation didn't include sheets or a pillow, as it's not recommended for overnight travel, a representative of the train line previously told Business Insider.

But the budget airline on Tuesday launched a new add-on to get more room at the front of its tightly-packed planes — with no middle seat neighbor. On flights starting April 10, Frontier will offer UpFront Plus in the first two rows of its Airbus planes, where it will block the sale of the middle seat. Those seats will also include four to five inches more legroom compared with most of the seats on the planes, an airline spokeswoman said. Fellow budget airline Spirit offers the "Big Front Seat" in its Airbus cabins. The new Frontier option isn't a new seat, but is instead spaced differently than most of the plane.

I was a senior in college in 1978 when I wrote my first opinion piece that touched on airline deregulation. It was an editorial in The Cornell Daily Sun (“Ithaca’s only morning newspaper”!) I wrote, “When Kahn began hacking away at airline protectionism the airlines screamed, but today fares are lower, passenger volume is way up and airlines are actually profiting. People complain about high fares, unreliable service, lack of legroom and so on. The public’s disgruntlement has created an opening for talk about some pretty extreme solutions.

Why airlines plug up emergency exits

However, as a former United Airlines pilot now lecturing in Yale University’s School of Management, I believe the wrong questions are being asked about what happened on Alaska Airlines Flight 1282. The question we need to ask is: Why wouldn’t an airline use all of an aircraft’s emergency exits? Others, such as emergency exits, are more opaque to travelers. NTSB/Handout/ReutersWhy you get more emergency exits in IndonesiaIn the US, airlines must comply with federal aviation regulations, which dictate aircraft maintenance procedures and in-flight personnel assignments – and minimum standards for emergency exits. That’s precisely what happened with Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 – and how “door plug” suddenly entered the American vernacular.

"Many people, they sit in those seats and they don't know that they are subject to helping when an emergency actually happens," he said. "There are clear pockets where they're not aware that they're about to hit and they can be very severe," he said.
