New York CNN —Stores are drowning in a glut of merchandise this holiday season, keeping the discounts fast and furious in the runup to Christmas. With Christmas Day falling on a Sunday, and Christmas Eve falling on the preceding Saturday, Super Saturday this year is on Dec. 17th. With eight days to go until Christmas Day, and drop-dead shipping deadlines approaching, people have a lot more buying to do. Well ahead of the final full weekend before Christmas, stores this year were already offering discounts of 50% to 60% off, and tacking on free shipping for online orders. “Retailers want to start selling for the next big holiday, which is Valentine’s Day,” said Davis.
Banks struggled to find demand from junk-bond investors for $2.4 billion of secured bonds and loans that is part of the debt package after a weeks-long marketing effort, the sources said. It showed the challenges banks face to sell down highly leveraged debt this quarter as bond yields spiked in response to a hawkish Fed policy and recessionary fears. The source would not say whether that would mean re-offering the debt to investors at even juicier terms. The end result is the banks involved are digging into their own pockets to provide the whole debt for the Tenneco acquisition which closed on Thursday. So it's almost like investors have seen this cycle occur that makes them question the outlook of something like Tenneco," he added.

Thanksgiving was around the corner, but that year the feast would be just for my husband, David, and me plus a neighbor. That year, David arranged our garage so it functioned as an intimate yet socially distanced café for three. As for the menu, I’ve never been a fan of traditional roast turkey—let’s be honest, it’s kind of bland and dry—and for three people, even the smallest turkey wouldn’t make sense. I needed an alternative that was practical but festive enough to bring some much-needed cheer.
Yet the government’s unfunded mini-budget on Sept. 23 stoked fears of runaway inflation, causing gilt yields to soar. The mess left pension funds scrambling to raise margin, and they wound up doing so by selling their most liquid asset – gilts. And the more the pension funds sold, the more gilt prices fell, causing a vicious spiral and fears the funds could run out of cash. By the time Governor Andrew Bailey intervened, certain pension funds had been hit with margin calls as high as 100 million pounds. Ahead of the BoE’s announcement, strategists said the 2.1 trillion pound gilt market was seizing up, with very poor liquidity and pricing quality being a clear sign of market dysfunction.
