The Baha Mar resort in Nassau was full of quants, engineers, and data scientists the week before Christmas. Attendees heard speakers such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, author Malcolm Gladwell, and retired US Army Gen. Stan McChrystal speak on different topics, including the future of technology and history. One session featured Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert speaking on robotics and artificial intelligence with the firm's robot dog, Spot, next to him. But for those at WorldQuant looking forward to relaxing, the resort has plenty of options. Entertainment during the week also included a performance from David Blaine, the well-known illusionist.

Recruiters working with Michael Gelband's ExodusPoint no longer need to track down the hiring manager every time they find a compelling candidate. The multi-strategy manager told its recruiting partners in an email blast that the new process for submitting candidates will be through Greenhouse, the TPG Growth-backed jobs board. Gelband's former boss, Millennium founder Izzy Englander, deemed it a "talent bubble," as firms poach portfolio managers, analysts, and software engineers from each other — driving up compensation industrywide. ExodusPoint's decision to push its external recruiting network to an online portal comes as the firm integrates more than 35 new portfolio managers into its strategy over the last 12 months. Those teams will need analysts, researchers, and developers to support its growing army of portfolio managers, and the firm, like its peers, is always hunting for top-performing PMs.

CNN —Axl Rose, lead singer of the rock band Guns N’ Roses, has been accused of sexually assaulting a Penthouse magazine model in a lawsuit filed Wednesday in New York. The lawsuit was filed on Wednesday with the New York State Supreme Court and was obtained by CNN. It’s not just individual musicians stepping out of line, but an industrial system of enabling them and then covering up their misconduct and crimes, silencing survivors and normalizing sexual assault. LOS ANGELES (AP) — An elevated Los Angeles freeway closed for more than a week because of an arson fire reopened ahead of Monday morning's commute, at least a day earlier than previously announced and weeks ahead of the original estimate. “Welcome back, Los Angeles!” Mayor Karen Bass posted late Sunday on X, formerly known as Twitter. Gavin Newsom said recent safety inspections showed the span was safe to start reopening Sunday evening and that the freeway would be “fully operational” before Monday's rush hour. State investigators repeatedly identified fire and safety hazards at a leased storage space under an elevated Los Angeles freeway before it burned in the fire, documents show. The California Department of Transportation, or Caltrans, released the documents Friday.

The update, according to two people with knowledge of the talks, was that there is no update — at least about the much-ballyhooed tie-up between Schonfeld and its much larger rival, $60 billion Millennium Management. Whether investors will pull a significant chunk of capital or stand by the firm won't crystallize until 5 p.m. Thursday. Schonfeld, whose assets stood at $11.7 billion in October, has experienced two years of lackluster returns following a period of rapid expansion. Schonfeld management was courting several institutional investors, and in early October, the Financial Times reported that Millennium threw its hat in the ring. In the event of some form of tie-up with Millennium, there would be redundancies, especially in corporate and back-office roles.

Billionaire Millennium founder Izzy Englander blames long non-competes for the hedge-fund talent fight. He said at the closed Robin Hood conference Tuesday that there's a talent bubble, not a talent war. He also said that artificial intelligence is a tool, but not revolutionary. One of the main players in the hedge-fund talent war doesn't believe there's a battle going on. This story is available exclusively to Insider subscribers.

A new documentary “Uncharitable,” from “Paris Trout” and “Losing Isaiah” director Stephen Gyllenhaal, wants to change that. For almost twenty years, researchers and nonprofits have warned about the negative consequences of starving nonprofits of general operating expenses, also known as overhead. In part by emphasizing efficiency, those donors continue to pressure nonprofits to decrease their standing costs, using a slightly different vocabulary. Similarly, more donors understand the value of granting unearmarked funds, which allow nonprofits to change plans or simply to invest in their staff or improve their infrastructure or technology. ___Associated Press coverage of philanthropy and nonprofits receives support through the AP’s collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc.

The message was that a tie-up with Millennium was a 50-50 proposition and that any agreement would be contingent on Schonfeld remaining independent. Other strategic investors in the mix include Blackstone, GIC, and Future Fund, an Australian sovereign wealth vehicle that's already a significant Schonfeld investor. Schonfeld's assets have dipped this year amid meager returns, and the fund has cut costs and slowed hiring in recent months. But fundraising from cautious institutional investors is time-consuming, and Millennium chief trading officer Mark Meskin contacted Schonfeld's leadership to discuss a potential tie-up, sources say. Schonfeld, industry sources say, was likely under pressure from existing investors, who have had to bear a higher brunt of the fees following redemptions.

According to Goldman's chief economist, Jan Hatzius, some 25% of all US workers work from home at least part of the week. So, which Wall Street firms are still letting employees work from home at least part of the time? On days employees are in, the firm focuses on taking "advantage of our shared location," it reads. At that time, the firm called for its employees to come into the office a minimum of three days a week. Since then, most employees have been in the office throughout the week, according to a person familiar with the firm.

When it was raising fresh money from investors in 2020, one slide on the pitch deck for the hedge fund Schonfeld Strategic Advisors got to the heart of the issue: "Why Schonfeld?" A hedge fund recruiterAmid the weakness, the fund has begun to prune costs. Steve Schonfeld (class of 1977) and Brad Tolkin (class of 1976) attended Roslyn High School in Roslyn Heights, New York. Tolkin told Insider in 2019 that the firm's goal was no less than becoming "the premier equities hedge fund globally." While Steven Schonfeld's 20% annual-return goals would've been ambitious for any sizable hedge fund, returns have also lagged behind peers.

Hedge funds have reached the halfway point in a challenging year. The first half of 2023 was not how hedge fund managers drew it up. They invested heavily in global macro hiring late last year, expecting plenty more runway in the strategy's revival after a blockbuster 2022. Overall, the hedge fund industry lags far behind, gaining just 1.23% through May, according to the HFRI Fund Weighted Composite Index. Citadel's strength has been one of the few certainties in an otherwise uncertain year for hedge funds.

Billionaire Ken Griffin's Citadel continues to lead the competitive multistrategy hedge fund performance race this year, despite being bested for the month of May by Izzy Englander's hedge fund. Sick of sewage, Britons protest at water companies' pollution
  + stars: | 2023-05-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
To the beat of a drumming band and waving placards, the protestors called on Britain’s water companies to do more to prevent sewage discharges. "We are sick of this sewage and they need to take action," Izzy Ross, Surfers Against Sewage's campaign manager told Reuters. Public anger has been fuelled by the payment of dividends to investors and large salaries and bonuses to water industry executives. Campaigners say water companies are discharging much more often than they should, including when there has been no rain. On Thursday, Water UK, the trade body representing the UK water industry, apologised, said the public was right to be upset, and said more should have been done to address the issue of spillages sooner.
In late 2021 Matthew Tuttle launched a fund that bets against the ARK Innovation ETF. A month ago he started a new ETF that shorts stocks picked by Jim Cramer of "Mad Money." Tuttle, the CEO and investment chief of Tuttle Capital Management, is starting to get a lot of requests for "anti"-ETFs. When shorting big name investors makes senseIt's easy to assume Tuttle is motivated by personal or professional dislike for Wood and Cramer. While he's considered creating an anti-fintwit ETF, Tuttle is still positive on Fintwit itself.
Multi-strategy hedge funds had a mixed March after the Silicon Valley Bank collapse put markets on edge. The Citadel Wellington fund ended the month up 1.38%, while Steve Cohen's Point72 was up 1.33%. Equities was up 2.16% in March, bringing year-to-date performance to 4.56%. Its global fixed income fund returned 0.12% in March, bringing year-to-date performance to 1.77%. Hedge fund performance figures are still trickling out, but data and reports suggest that trend-following and macro funds were caught out after the banking crisis rocked markets.
There's an old saying on Wall Street: You can only leave Goldman Sachs once. Insider's Alex Morrell has a fascinating look at how Goldman Sachs' top executives have headed to some of the top hedge funds in the world in recent years. Poaching talent is a longstanding tradition on Wall Street, and the path from the investment banks to the buy side is a well-worn one. It's an indication of the shifting tides on Wall Street between the firms that traditionally held all the power (big banks) and the ones usurping them (multi-strat hedge funds). Click here to read more about how Goldman Sachs alumni are getting poached by the world's biggest hedge funds.
In November, one of the world's most consequential hedge funds announced a shake-up at the top of its power structure. In an internal memo, the founder of Millennium Management, Izzy Englander, said that Bobby Jain would be vacating the co-CIO role. "You can't readily find that managerial experience at other hedge funds and Goldman is a perfect place to look for those people." 8 former Goldman Sachs leaders are now Millennium execsEnglander isn't alone — firms rarely are in the copycat world of multistrats. In a statement to Insider, Abbey Collins, a spokesperson for Goldman Sachs, said, "Goldman Sachs has always been and remains a talent magnet.
But a recent report by Credit Suisse on the use cases for both ChatGPT and AI in finance caught my eye. AI models are only as good as the data they receive, which leaves them susceptible to bias, just like humans. A top-performing hedge fund is looking to team up with one of the hottest tech tools. Izzy Englander's Millennium Management told clients that it'll expect to get paid regardless of whether the hedge fund actually makes money for its investors, according to Bloomberg. The billionaire hedge fund manager believes all signs are pointing towards a recession.
