"Tipflation" could be blamed on tablets or the post-pandemic economy — but consumers seem to be giving in to the pressure and leaving more cash behind. Sure, most Americans report feeling negative about tipping, but service workers are earning exponentially more in gratuity than before the pandemic, according to payroll provider Gusto. From March 2020 to May 2023, hourly wages only rose 18%, compared with a 42% increase in tip earnings, the company found. Of the 300,000 small and medium-sized businesses included in the analysis, bar workers made more in tips than employees in other service industries. Kabir agreed, saying he tips upwards of 40% for particularly good bar service.

Delivery drivers are weighing in on a contentious debate over what constitutes a good tip. Some drivers say a good tip is roughly 15% to 20% gratuity on the total cost of a delivery order. The drivers Insider interviewed generally agreed that the baseline for a good tip is between 15% to 20% of the total bill — including taxes and fees. Percentage-based tips don't always account for the time and effort it takes to deliver an order, drivers said. Consider delivery time and distance when tipping, drivers sayWhether a $5 tip on a $20 order is good (or bad) can depend on the circumstances of the delivery.

DoorDash recently fired a driver after he cursed at a woman for tipping $5 on a $20 order. It comes as more businesses are asking customers to tip at cash registers and even at self-checkout stations. In a blog post from 2019, Grubhub suggested customers tip 20% — and consider adding more if it's an extra-big order, or if there's bad weather. That means the woman who tipped $5 on her $20 DoorDash order — which is a 25% gratuity — actually gave quite a good tip, drivers said. "A $5 tip on a $20 order?

James said that's why she opted out of the tip screen when she implemented her store's contactless point-of-sale system. "I do also understand tips are not 'needed' in all situations." "I often get asked how much I tip, and I don't," Lynn said of most point-of-sale tip prompts.

On top of a nightly charge of as much as £918, or about $1142, the hotel charges guests a daily £15, or $19, service fee. The Dreamcatcher DW in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is another hotel that charges an undisclosed $15 a night "hotel fee." "We do have a $50 check-in fee that started at the beginning of this year," a spokesperson for Hanalei Bay Resort told Insider. The etiquette around gratuity is becoming less clear. Photo: Getty Images/iStockphotoThe mental math of when and how much to tip has become unnecessarily confusing, say readers of Rachel Wolfe’s recent WSJ story about tipping at self-checkout. As tip requests now show up for everything from locksmiths to wedding dresses, the etiquette around gratuity is becoming less clear.

The landmark case is the court’s 2010 decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. A five-justice majority — including Justice Thomas — struck down decades-old restrictions on independent campaign expenditures by corporations, holding that they violated the companies’ free speech rights. The government’s legitimate interest in fighting corruption, the court held, is limited to direct quid pro quo deals, in which a public official makes a specific commitment to act in exchange for something of value. In dissent, Justice John Paul Stevens accused the majority of adopting a “crabbed view of corruption” that the court itself had rejected in an earlier case. But the decision didn’t come out of nowhere: The court has often been unanimous in its zeal for curtailing criminal corruption laws.
A bill passed in Colorado would clear the way for all workers to accept cash tips. Some businesses, including Walmart and McDonald's, don't allow employees to accept cash gratuity. But some businesses, including big names in retail, don't allow their employees to take cash tips from customers. Walmart, for example, has historically forbidden its employees from accepting cash tips, as has McDonald's. Neither company immediately responded to requests for comment on their policies or the Colorado bill from Insider.
Self-checkout machines at cafes, sports stadiums, and airports are asking people to tip — and customers aren't happy about giving their extra money to machines. A recent report from The Wall Street Journal noted the rise of digital, self-checkout kiosks hitting customers with a tip prompt at the end of their transactions. This prompt has frustrated people who are being asked to tip workers with whom they've had no interaction. "I was confused, because it wasn't entirely clear who I was tipping," he told the Journal, though he tipped 20% anyway. A spokesperson for OTG told the journal that all tip money collected is pooled and then paid out to the staff members working that particular shift.

Not long into the pandemic, Americans were eager to tip their front-line-working baristas and servers. “This is the hottest topic in etiquette right now,” said Daniel Post Senning, the co-author of “Emily Post Etiquette, The Centennial Edition” and the great-great grandson of the etiquette icon Emily Post. He cites the pressure of inflation, the disruption of the pandemic and the rush back to travel for the unease. “There’s growing anxiety and public discussion around tipping.”Offering guidance on when and how much to tip when you travel, etiquette experts, academics and travelers weighed in with the following advice. They want to do the right thing," says Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert and owner of the Protocol School of Texas. Run your credit card at a restaurant, and your server will hand you a receipt with a "tip" line. In a recent survey from hotel software firm Canary Technologies, 79% of hotel guests said they think workers should get tips. But hotel workers in the survey said only about 30% of guests typically tip. As for a tip, you don't need to break out your wallet for directions to a nearby coffee shop, says Gottsman.
New York CNN —More stores now offer customers the option to tip, from coffee shops to ice cream stores. They are also overwhelmed with the number of places that give them the option to tip with a card on an iPad, leading people to be less generous. Although consumers are accustomed to tipping waiters, bartenders and other service workers, tipping a barista or cashier may be a new phenomenon for many shoppers. Some customers tip no matter what. Others feel guilty if they don’t tip or embarrassed if their tip is stingy.
Many have taken a stand against the pressure to tip everywhere, saying the US has a "tipping culture." But the shift in American tipping culture has come with some consumer backlash. Even as consumers expect to be solicited for a tip when they're out and about, some on social media are working to draw a new line, spurring regular debates. Dubbed "tipping culture" by many on social media, the feeling that gratuities have become compulsory has also spread beyond North America and into other countries like Australia. Still, many on the side of service workers argue that tipping is necessary for many workers to be able to stay afloat and pay their rent.
Cleveland ranked No.1 on the list with diners there adding a 20.6% gratuity to their checks, on average. San Francisco brings up the rear, with a 17% average tip. Just about every transaction you make these days, it seems, comes with a tablet being flipped in your direction with suggested tip amounts. As long as the server doesn't stick a fork in my eye, they get 20% — more if they're especially good. I recently picked a few things up at a local grocer/convenience store/deli, and when the touchscreen flipped, I was prompted to tip 20%, 22%, or 25%.
Cruise lines like Carnival and Norwegian have either raised daily gratuities, WiFi fees, or both. Cruise lines have seen an increase in onboard spending as they continue to add more premium amenities and dining. Others, like Norwegian Cruise Line, are raising the daily tip rate up to $5 for passengers staying in higher-end staterooms and suites. Meanwhile, Carnival has raised both daily gratuity and WiFi fees, the latter by $5 for premium WiFi. An increase in WiFi fees is just a "natural inflationary price increase," Patrick Scholes, an analyst at Truist Securities, told Insider.

Michigan man says his six-year-old son spent nearly $1,000 on Grubhub deliveries on Saturday. Stonehouse documented the nearly $1,000 food shopping spree on Facebook. He told local news outlet Michigan Live it took a few deliveries for him to realize his son was behind all the orders. I looked at my phone with repeated messages that my food was getting ready, my food was being delivered," Stonehouse told Michigan Live. The nearly $1,000 tab included the default 25% gratuity charged by Grubhub, so the delivery drivers also cashed in on Mason's spending spree.
