Now, a new study has found those who experience more gratitude also have a lower risk of dying. The researchers used data from the Nurses’ Health Study, which included nearly 50,000 women between ages 69 and 96 who completed a six-item gratitude questionnaire in 2016. The researchers controlled for factors such as psychological well-being, health issues and other demographics including social and religious participation. There’s no clear consensus on how often one should practice gratitude, Simon-Thomas said. Having more gratitude has also been linked to being more optimistic in general, and people who express higher levels of gratitude tend to look more for the good in life, Watkins added.

One evening last June, as Esther Iradukunda set the table for dinner at her home in Buffalo, she heard a high-pitched cry through the kitchen window. She rushed outside and followed the screams to the train tracks that ran about 100 feet away from her house. She found her young brother Aron lying on the tracks, run over when he chased a ball between the cars of a train that had suddenly begun to move. Ms. Iradukunda desperately pulled her brother clear just as the train began moving again, rolling slowly toward the CSX train yards about a quarter-mile away. No one from the railroad had heard the boy’s screams or noticed him trapped on the tracks.

☆ Three Missionaries in Haiti Are Killed in Gang Attack

An Oklahoma-based missionary group working in Haiti’s capital was attacked by gangs on Thursday, leaving two Americans and the group’s director dead, the organization, Missions in Haiti, announced on Facebook. The independent nonprofit was founded by an Oklahoma couple, David and Alicia Lloyd, in 2000. The victims were the founders’ son, David Lloyd III, 23, known as Davy; his wife, Natalie Lloyd, 21; and the organization’s Haitian director, Jude Montis, 20, the group said. Most of you know my daughter and son-in-law Davy and Natalie Lloyd are full time missionaries in Haiti. They were attacked by gangs this evening and were both killed.

It is hardly the first time that an international force has gone to Haiti in the name of law and order. For the past century, soldiers from around the world — including the United States — have deployed to, and even invaded, Haiti. In the past 30 years, the United Nations has launched at least six peacekeeping missions to Haiti. International soldiers have restored overthrown presidents, eased them out and helped train the Haitian National Police. But they have also left bleak legacies of sexual exploitation, civilian casualties and deadly disease.
