People who contract Lyme disease may experience temporary symptoms similar to the flu, such as muscle aches, fever and headache. CNN: Has the incidence of Lyme disease increased in recent years? While most US cases involve travelers who contracted malaria from other parts of the world, locally transmitted cases have occurred, too.

"Even with a team of babysitters or support staff, the emotional and psychological weight of parenting often falls squarely on the single parent's shoulders," Wright said. She shared why Kardashian's struggles touch upon a difficulty many single moms face, no matter how much money they have. Single parents can feel even more acutely spread thin because they're doing it alone. That makes the single parent's job that much more challenging. "People do outsource every single part of parenting, and that has consequences for children," Wright said.

On TikTok, floor time involves sitting or lying on the floor to soothe yourself. We asked experts what they think about floor time and how it can help if you're anxious or overwhelmed. Lying on the floor can help you block out external stimuli, allowing your body time to reset, Wood said. As you're lying on the ground, "make sure your knees are at a 90-degree bend to support your lower half," she said. Alternatives to this practiceWhether you call it floor time or a corpse pose, lying on the floor may not be an option.

Policy advocates argue that child care, including for infants and toddlers, is an economic issue that affects all Americans, not just those with young kids. That is up from $57 billion in 2018, before the pandemic exposed and exacerbated holes in the system for working families and the companies that rely on them. Part of the nationwide solution is supporting what the group calls the "workforce behind the workforce" — early child care providers. "Supporting the early childhood workforce could include such things as making sure child care providers have access to benefits. "Programs that support additional training and education for child care providers are important as well."

The concrete jungle is an increasingly unfriendly playground for young kids and their parents. Families with kids under six years old are more than twice as likely to leave New York City than families without young kids, according to a new report from the Fiscal Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank. To make matters worse, many parents of young kids were thrown into a panic several months ago when New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced he would cut $567 million from public preschool programs for three-year-olds. Between 2020 and 2022, 17,500 millionaires moved into New York City, while 2,400 left, FPI reported last year. Have you left New York City or State because of rising childcare and housing costs?

Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to charges of illegally purchasing and possessing a gun while abusing or being addicted to drugs, a violation of federal law. Another question probed whether potential jurors or their close associates had ever sought treatment for drug use. During their, at times, emotional answers, prospective juror after juror described how drug use had afflicted people they knew. About 42% of adults in the United States say they personally know at least one person who died from a drug overdose, according to survey findings published earlier this year by the nonprofit research institute RAND Corporation. In addition to illuminating the sheer number of Americans impacted by addiction, Hunter Biden’s trial is also creating critical awareness around the very language used to describe drug use.

CNN —New York could soon become the first state to pass a law restricting social media platforms from using algorithms to promote content to minors. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers are nearing a legislative deal on the proposal, according to a person familiar with the matter. That could mean significant changes to how kids in New York interact with social media apps and would make algorithmically generated content feeds an opt-in experience requiring parental consent. A tentative deal on the social media bill was earlier reported by The Wall Street Journal. “We’re not banning young people from social media,” Hochul said in an interview on NPR Monday.

The evidence is overwhelming that physical activity is good for both our bodies and our brains. By one estimate, we're getting 27 fewer minutes of physical activity on average each day than we did 200 years ago. For kids, who need even more physical activity, the decline is stark. A 2022 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth gave the US a D- score, concluding that America, while never sufficiently supportive of physical activity, had become even worse at making the space and time for it. I'd forgotten that exercise, while not a cure for my mental illness, was a necessary precursor to my mental wellness.

The Labor Department said that through the employment of children at its supplier, Hyundai was in violation of the “hot goods” provision of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which prevents the interstate commerce of goods “that were produced in violation of the minimum wage, overtime or child labor provisions” of that law. “Companies cannot escape liability by blaming suppliers or staffing companies for child labor violations when they are in fact also employers themselves,” said Seema Nanda, the Labor Department’s chief legal officer, in a statement Thursday. The suit comes after investigations by Reuters and The New York Times documented the use of child labor by the suppliers of car companies. In 2022, Reuters found that Smart Alabama had used child labor at its facility, and that Kia, which is part of the same South Korean conglomerate as Hyundai, had also used child labor in the South. The United Automobile Workers union has said it hopes to organize workers at Hyundai’s Montgomery plant.

CNN —Reassuring new evidence suggests that feeding children smooth peanut butter during infancy and early childhood can help reduce their risk of developing a peanut allergy even years later. “Peanut allergy develops very early in most children between six and 12 months of life. The LEAP-Trio trial set out to examine whether that reduced risk of peanut allergy would last into adolescence. At that age, peanut allergy remained “significantly more prevalent” among the children who originally avoided peanuts, with about 15% having a peanut allergy. Among those who originally consumed peanuts, about 4% had a peanut allergy, the researchers found.

James Wood’s mother struggled with addiction, and he often found himself adrift, not knowing what day or month it was. When James was 14, his mother died of pneumonia, and he entered California’s foster care system. As a minor with a deceased parent and a disability, James was entitled to federal benefits, totaling $780 a month, some of which his mother had accrued during the years that she worked as a nurse. The government got the money instead, according to James and his adoptive father, Wayne Stidham. It’s a longstanding practice for many states or counties to apply for the federal benefits of foster children, often without their knowledge, and then use the money to cover some of the costs of their care, according to legal advocates for children and congressional researchers.
