Bitcoin miners have tumbled since last Thursday, following the launch of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds . The declines are in part due to the pullback in the bitcoin price, which is down roughly 6% in the same period. In a Monday note to investors, Bernstein also pointed to lower investor appetite for mining stocks as a bitcoin proxy now that ETFs have entered the market. "Just like bitcoin, the next two months offer dip buying opportunity in bitcoin miners," Chhugani said. Bitcoin miners were top performers in 2023, outperforming even bitcoin.

H&M has probably been operating under the illusion that it could maintain pricing power while consumers are being hit by inflation. Its $120 billion rival Inditex (ITX.MC), whose Zara brand is considered more upmarket than H&M, has started to pause price increases. Right now, H&M trades on the same 20 times forward earnings multiple than Inditex.

The "no recession relief rally" has ended for the stock market, according to Stifel's Barry Bannister. The S&P 500 is up about 17% year-to-date, but has declined by about 3% since the start of August. Bannister expects the S&P 500 to finish the year at 4,400, suggesting potential downside of about 2% from current levels. According to data from Bank of America, stock market returns are typically muted between July and December in the third year of the Presidential Cycle, which reference a four-year stock market cycle that tracks with the four-year term of the US President. That's well below consensus estimates of the S&P 500 generating $226 in earnings per share next year.

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Ankur BanerjeeAnother day, another surprise hike. Broader consensus is that the Fed will do at least one more hike. The CME FedWatch tool showed the probability of the Fed hiking by 25 bps next week is 36%, it was 22% a day earlier. With a light data calendar and futures pointing to a mixed open in Europe, markets could drift on Thursday. Economists expect the Federal Reserve to pause on its tightening cycle on its June 13-14 meeting as price pressures soften and as its key rate rises above inflation for the first time since mid-2020.

Wall Street desperately wants the stock market to go back to the good ol' days. In that environment, any idiot — or anyone on Wall Street — could buy almost any asset, sit back, and watch its value increase. In this scenario, the stock market gets choppy. It was a pull-in-case-of-emergency valve that we pulled for so long that now it feels normal to Wall Street. Despite this constant caterwauling from Wall Street, Americans are working, spending, and helping the economy defy doom-and-gloom forecasts.

The investor behind a top 10 global ETF sees a bearish trend in the Big Tech rally. Anna Paglia, who oversees the tech-heavy Invesco QQQ Trust , sees signs investors are starting to take a defensive approach to the group. Two other top holdings, Meta Platforms and Nvidia , are up more than 100% for the year. "People don't know if … this performance is only driven by the mega caps or if there's more in there," she said. "We are still firm believers in the QQQ, but it's a wait and see for our clients," she said.
Barkin said he remained open-minded on whether the Fed at its June 13-14 policy meeting should raise the benchmark policy rate for an 11th straight time or leave it at the current range between 5.00% and 5.25%. I do wonder whether we're not going to need more impact on demand to bring inflation down to where we need to go," Barkin said, laying out a potential case for further rate increases. Barkin said he is comfortable overall with the Fed's move earlier this month to a meeting-by-meeting, data-dependent approach after having raised the policy rate by 5 percentage points since March 2022 in an effort to lower the highest inflation in 40 years. "I'm still seeing data that suggests a hot job market and enduring inflation," he said. "I continue to believe that inflation will last longer than perhaps market measures of inflation compensation would suggest.
TAIPEI, April 28 (Reuters) - Taiwan's top chip design company MediaTek is focusing more resources on chips for cars and AI computing as its smartphone clients face a supply glut and inflation and macroeconomic uncertainty dent demand for consumer electronics. "We are definitely moving our resources very, very rapidly towards the automotive and computing areas, because those areas will provide our growth in the next three to five years," MediaTek Inc (2454.TW) Chief Executive Rick Tsai told an earnings call. Tsai said everyone, including MediaTek, was rushing to claim that they were able to support generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT. MediaTek is investing heavily in AI because the new areas the company is focusing on are all related to computing, Tsai said. While smartphone demand has remained lacklustre in the first quarter, the company expects signs of recovery later this year.
[1/2] A LVMH luxury group logo is seen prior to the announcement of their 2019 results in Paris, France, January 28, 2020. European labels including LVMH's Louis Vuitton and Dior, as well as Chanel and Hermes have been riding a wave of strong demand from Americans, who emerged from lockdowns with savings and a desire to splash out on designer labels. He added the group is taking a cautious approach to price increases this year -- not just for cognac. "It's probably the most emblematic luxury store in the world," said Guiony. Elliott Savage, portfolio manager of U.S.-based fund YCG Investments, which holds shares in LVMH and other luxury brands, said a weakening U.S. luxury market in the near term could present an opportunity for dominant players to take market share.
Earnings season does not start until April 14, when the big banks begin reporting, but already the bears are saying expectations are too high. One of the issues that drives bears crazy is the refusal of analysts to slash earnings estimates for 2023. This is exactly what happened during the big selloff that culminated in the drop in the S & P in October of last year. These estimates from analysts are known as "bottoms-up" estimates, because the estimates come from an analysis of individual companies. I'll get into this more as we get closer to earnings season, but here's an example from Wolfe Research's Chris Senyek.

Call it the "incredible shrinking earnings story." Strategists are again starting to reduce earnings estimates. Earnings: shrinking fast (S & P 500 2023 estimates) June 2022: $252 Dec. 1: $231 Jan. 1: $229 Today: $222 Source: Refinitiv Jonathan Golub at Credit Suisse is the latest strategist to lower 2023 earnings estimates due to "margin pressures."
