But Iowa caucusgoers and New Hampshire primary voters also exposed noticeable chinks in Trump’s electoral armor and worrying general election headwinds that he and his campaign will face in the coming months. Yes, Trump handily won a head-to-head matchup in a New Hampshire primary contest that wasn’t limited to just Republicans. “Twenty percent of GOP voters will not vote for him,” the Republican member told CNN. Visibly miffed by Haley’s conviction to continue on after New Hampshire, Trump spent the evening lashing out at her online and trashing her appearance in his victory speech. Of the 30% of New Hampshire GOP primary voters who named immigration as their top concern, nearly 8 in 10 voted for Trump, according to CNN’s exit poll.

Rochester, New Hampshire CNN —Bonnie Cote never considered voting for anyone other than former President Donald Trump. Despite months of campaigning and millions spent on ads, mailers and door knocking in the Granite State, some Trump supporters said they were unfamiliar with Haley. “Everybody came out for Trump, Trump, Trump… so, why not go for Trump?”Kirwin said she thought Trump was “a little crazy” and his found his personality “awful,” but she also recalled watching him in the first 2016 general election debate against Hillary Clinton. “And make no mistake, we will restore our national pride.”It’s an argument that has worked on some former Trump voters. Here are five takeaways from the New Hampshire primaries:Trump wants Haley out — nowIn what were expected to be celebratory remarks Tuesday night in New Hampshire, Trump instead sounded annoyed that Haley had not yet dropped out of the Republican primary race. A Haley victory would usher in a more competitive phase of a primary that Trump has so far dominated. President Joe Biden is not on the ballot, having made South Carolina the first formal stop on the Democratic primary calendar. But New Hampshire is sticking to tradition and hosting its own Democratic primary anyway. We're about to find out whether Republican primary voters agree. Furious about Biden's decision, the “Live Free or Die” state ignored the president's wishes and will host its own unsanctioned Democratic primary anyway.

That explains why Trump got about half of all the Republican votes in Iowa, leaving DeSantis far behind. That should tell you a lot about Iowa voters, but enough of them also voted for DeSantis and Haley. When I spoke to the Haley campaign early Monday morning, before the Iowa caucuses had begun, they said they were shifting toward Trump, seemingly writing DeSantis off as their closest threat. DeSantis himself said last week that his finish in Iowa could “upend” Trump’s lead in the GOP primary. Ames, Iowa CNN —Teresa Garman has attended decades worth of Iowa caucuses, but views Monday’s meeting as the most consequential. In interviews, Iowans expressed an array of opinions on Trump’s legal problems, from anger over what they say they believe is a “witch hunt,” echoing the former president’s criticism, to a desire to move on and focus on issues plaguing the country. Among those who were not considering the former president, 57% said Trump was controversial and 48% said they were concerned about his legal issues. “If Trump is the nominee, it’s going to be about January 6, legal issues, criminal trials,” DeSantis said during a CNN debate Wednesday. “I think that Vivek is, in a roundabout way, even better for Trump than Trump being in there,” Sherman said.

With a cash haul from elite party donors expected to reach into the millions, the Los Angeles event could help ease concerns among Democrats about Biden's reelection chances. As of the last fundraising reporting deadline at the end of September, Biden and his party reported $91 million cash on hand. During the 2020 Democratic primary campaign, Smith and Costos hosted Biden's first major fundraiser in the area, during a Los Angeles swing that raised over $1 million. At the same time, Ms. Haley earned a new lift from the super PAC, called Independents Moving the Needle. It said it would initially focus on New Hampshire, where Republican voters are more moderate than in many other states — and, crucially, where voters who are not registered with a party can choose to participate in the Republican or Democratic primary race. After the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 23, the group will turn to South Carolina — Ms. Haley’s home state — and to “selected Super Tuesday states with open primaries,” according to a memo shared with The New York Times. “We all believe that Nikki Haley is an outstanding leader,” the memo says. “She has by far the best electability of any Republican presidential candidate in 2024.

Iowa is make or break for Mr. DeSantis, who has gone all in on the state. This makes it especially unsettling for his team that Ms. Haley has caught up with him there in recent polling. We need this election to once and for all defeat MAGA and Trumpism, and send Donald Trump packing, if he is not in prison. The filing marks a return to a state that Biden credits with catapulting him to the White House. Biden ousted Iowa and New Hampshire from the top spots on the party's nominating calendar in favor of South Carolina. The move forces any Democratic challenger to Biden to compete first in South Carolina instead of Iowa and New Hampshire, two largely white states which both rejected him in 2020. Biden did not register for New Hampshire's primary, slated for January, after the state refused the Democratic Party's request to move the date back. Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the third Republican presidential debate, held in Miami on Wednesday night. The debate didn’t answer the question of whether she can really cut into DeSantis’s more conservative bloc of support. He deserves praise for his substantive, competent answers, but there’s not much of a market for that in the Republican primaries. In a debate dominated by a neoconservative revival, Ramaswamy — in both style and substance — was the only Trumpist on the stage. primary voters relished his attacks on the Republican National Committee and the debate moderators.

Biden is the problem

But President Biden's political footing remains on shaky ground, as he polls poorly with voters. AdvertisementAdvertisementBiden's polling woes are raising eyebrowsFor months, Biden has generally been in a statistical tie with Trump regarding a 2024 matchup. Those concerns have led to a sizable bloc of Democrats expressing a desire for a new presidential nominee, even with Biden running for reelection next year. Biden won Michigan by nearly 3 points in 2020, making it a key state in his 2024 political calculus. Despite Biden's own party coasting to victory in several key elections, his inability to separate himself from Trump in national polls should cause the Democratic Party to broach a tough conversation: Is Biden the problem?
