Honolulu (AP) — Investigators reviewing the emergency response to last year’s wildfire that killed 102 people on Maui said in a report released Friday they found “no evidence” Hawaii officials made preparations for it, despite days of warnings that critical fire weather was coming. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency didn’t immediately respond with comment. Maui fire commanders discussed the forecast, but “no evidence of pre-event preparedness plans by the MFD were produced,” the report said. Maui County and the state use private contractors to help fight fires with water tankers and heavy equipment. And despite the warnings, the heads of the county emergency management agency and the Maui Fire Department were off-island that day, attending conferences in Honolulu.

CNN —India’s second nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarine joined its naval fleet late last month, a move the government says strengthens its nuclear deterrent as New Delhi casts a wary eye at both China and Pakistan. The de facto border between India and China, known as the Line of Actual Control, has been a longtime flashpoint between the two. India’s next ballistic missile subs could be years away, however, if history is any predictor of the future. Arighaat was launched almost seven years ago, and if that timeline from launch to commissioning applies to the next Indian ballistic missile sub, it won’t join the service until 2030. Gilead 's twice-yearly shot reduced HIV infections by 96% in a second large study, the company said Thursday. The positive phase three trial data on lenacapavir sets the stage for likely approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for HIV prevention. The company said 99.9% of participants who received lenacapavir did not acquire HIV, with two cases among 2,180 people. Gilead in June also said lenacapavir was 100% effective at preventing HIV in another late-stage trial with cisgender women. The trial results should lead to an FDA approval and launch in the market by 2025, Yee said.
