Most expensive Ferrari ever auctioned fetches $51.7 million
  + stars: | 2023-11-15 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO has sold for $51.705 million, becoming the most expensive car from the Italian manufacturer ever sold at auction. “Now, it ranks among the most expensive cars sold at auction, a true testament to its singular place in history,” he added. Only 39 examples of the 250 GTO were built by the legendary Italian marque between 1962 and 1964, and it’s extremely rare for an owner to part with one at any price. Renowned car collector David MacNeil, founder and CEO of automotive floor-mat company WeatherTech, bought chassis number 4153 GT for $70 million in 2018. “The Ferrari 250 GTO is the motoring market’s equivalent of Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ and a talisman for any top-end collection,” said Knight.

THE CAPITAL of South Australia, Adelaide offers an almost utopian alternative to the typical urban sprawl. A moat of lush parklands surrounds a one-square-mile city center full of shops and restaurants. Beyond that, leafy suburbs give way to the Adelaide Hills, where koalas roam, and to the sea. Recently, transplant chefs from China and Vietnam have infused the petite city of just over a million people with diverse flavors. Best of all, it’s supremely easy to wander Adelaide by foot, stumbling upon discoveries while enjoying long, post-food-coma strolls.

Some believe a tight oil market and resilient U.S. growth will keep energy stocks rising for the rest of 2023. Bullish investors argue that energy stocks are still cheap by historical standards - and far less richly valued than other areas of the market. The energy sector currently trades at a forward price to earnings ratio of 12.2, well below its historical median forward P/E of 15.3, according to LSEG Datastream. Parts of the market appear skeptical energy stocks have much further to run. "That should result in a ... smoother ride for energy stocks than we’ve been accustomed to."

The head of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee has asked the country's top three oilfield services companies to explain why they continued doing business in Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, and demanded that they commit to “cease all investments” in Russia's fossil fuel infrastructure. Sen. Bob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, cited an Associated Press report that the companies — SLB, Baker Hughes and Halliburton — helped keep Russian oil flowing even as sanctions targeted the Russian war effort. Much of Russia’s oil is hard to reach, and analysts say that had U.S. oilfield services companies all pulled out, its production would have taken an immediate hit. Halliburton wound down its Russia operations less than six months after the invasion, while Baker Hughes sold its oilfield services business in Russia after about nine months. In contrast, oil majors such as Shell and BP announced they would quit Russia within days or weeks of the invasion, writing off billions of dollars.

Bottas settled for a six pack after winning weight in beer
  + stars: | 2023-08-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
ZANDVOORT, Netherlands, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Alfa Romeo driver Valtteri Bottas settled for a six-pack after winning his weight in beer in a cycle race in Colorado over Formula One's August break. "The prize for the best costume was your weight in beer, and I really wanted to win the prize," said Bottas of last week's event. "I was thinking about it, obviously being mainly an American crowd, so I went for The Simpsons and Duffman." Bottas admitted his favourite character was Homer Simpson but also figured it would be tougher riding uphill dressed in that guise. He also rode a 100-mile gravel race on Sunday, finishing 20th out of 926 entrants.

RM Sotheby's has put up a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO for auction for around $60 million. Car collectors love the GTO model Ferraris because of their championship history, Gord Duff, RM Sotheby's global head of auctions, told the Journal. In fact, another 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO was auctioned by RM Sotheby's for more than $48 million back in 2018, CNBC reported. A 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO was reportedly bought by David MacNeil, the founder, and CEO of WeatherTech, for $70 million in 2018, per various media reports at the time. RM Sotheby's sold a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe for the equivalent price of $142 million last year.

Shelbourne goalkeeper leaves club for Love Island
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
June 15 (Reuters) - Irish side Shelbourne are grappling with an unconventional transfer after goalkeeper Scott van der Sluis announced he was leaving to participate in dating reality show "Love Island". Van der Sluis, a former Wales youth international, is heading to Spain after requesting an early release from his contact to take a break from his professional career. Shelbourne boss Damien Duff was amused by Van der Sluis' decision. "I was shocked and saddened that Scott chose a villa in Mallorca full of beautiful, single women over myself, the staff and the players," ex-Ireland winger Duff joked. "All jokes aside, I thank Scott for his services to Shelbourne FC and we all wish him the very best for the future, whatever that holds."

This is the same Nina Gold who’s made a successful career casting some of the defining films and TV shows of this century. “I still don’t really understand what it is that makes acting good,” she says. For “Bad Sisters’” smarmy, abusive antagonist John Paul, Gold cast Claes Bang. For Gold and her team – rising to six people, depending on projects – it’s a lot of logistics and audition tapes. Gold cast Taylor-Johnson in his breakout role as John Lennon in “Nowhere Boy” (2009) at age 18-20, she guesses, but had been auditioning him since about the age of nine.

By September, the tally of lost and captured Russian tanks reached 1,000 — more than all the tanks in the British, French, German, and Finnish militaries combined. The first time these British tanks found a fight, only 25 of the 49 of them actually moved when ordered to commence the attack. Nonetheless, before the conflict was over, Churchill himself would decide tanks had, once again, run their course, declaring, "we have too much armor — tanks are finished." And that is the real lesson we can glean from the performance of Russian tanks in Ukraine over the past year. Maxim Shemetov/ReutersThis point becomes evident when you look at Russian tank losses recorded by the Oryx Blog between February and April 2022, when Russian tank losses were at their absolute worst.
