Paris CNN —France’s high-speed train lines were targeted by multiple “malicious” acts including arson on Friday, in what has been described as “coordinated sabotage” to disrupt travel ahead of the Opening Ceremony of the Paris Olympics. SNCF said one of the acts was “foiled.”Travel on these lines is “very disrupted,” with the railway network needing to divert and cancel a large number of trains, SNCF said. Passengers gather around the departure boards at the Gare Montparnasse train station in Paris. Eurostar, the high-speed train service that connects the United Kingdom with France, has been forced to cancel and divert trains due to the “coordinated acts of malice,” on French lines. Meanwhile, the Paris 2024 Olympic Committee canceled its pre-opening ceremony press conference amid the incident, and CNN has also asked Paris 2024 for comment.

New York CNN —The Mirage Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip is closing Wednesday, ending 34 years in business. It will reopen in 2027 as Hard Rock Las Vegas, with a soaring 700-foot-tall hotel tower in the shape of a guitar, similar to its Florida property. Architects told CNN affiliate KSNV-TV that the tropical design created by Wynn was meant to resemble an oasis in the chaotic Las Vegas Strip. MGM Resorts bought the Mirage from Wynn in 2000 and sold it in 2022 for more than $1 billion to Hard Rock International. ☆ Mythical Sword’s Disappearance Brings Mystery to French Village

As legend has it, a sword from God given to Roland, an 8th century military leader under Charlemagne, was so powerful that Roland’s last mission was to destroy it. When the blade, called Durandal, proved indestructible, Roland threw it as far as he could, and it sailed over 100 miles before slicing through the side of a rock face in the medieval French village of Rocamadour. That sword, as the story goes, sat wedged in the stone for nearly 1,300 years, and it became a landmark and tourist attraction in Rocamadour, a small village in southwestern France, about 110 miles east of Bordeaux. So residents and officials there were stunned to discover late last month that the blade had vanished, according to La Dépêche du Midi, a French newspaper. An officer with France’s national police force in Cahors, a town 30 miles southwest of Rocamadour, said that the sword disappeared sometime after nightfall on June 21, and that the authorities opened an investigation after a passerby reported the next morning that it was missing.

WASHINGTON — After he gave his State of the Union speech in March, President Joe Biden seemed to have quieted persistent fears that, at 81, he was no longer up to the job. But a Democratic lawmaker who shook hands with Biden in the House chamber that night was troubled by his appearance. Biden's poor showing at the debate with Donald Trump last week threatens to end his campaign just four months before the election. A third Democratic lawmaker said that in recent months, Biden looked "exceedingly tired" when the two were together. Vivian Maier was a disappearance artist. He has dedicated himself to promoting her legacy, and co-directed an Oscar-nominated documentary film, “Finding Vivian Maier” (2014). “Vivian Maier: Unseen Work,” at Fotografiska until Sept. 29, is the first New York museum show devoted to Maier and one of the largest exhibitions ever mounted of her photographs. Organized by Anne Morin, director of diChroma Photography, it was first seen in a different iteration at the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris in 2021. Thematically arranged and attractively installed, with more than 200 works (including color photos taken with a Leica, Super 8 films and audio recordings), it offers an unusual opportunity to assess Maier’s achievement.
