The stock price is stalling near resistance around the $128 price level and I have a bearish options trade to capitalize on it. To further confirm a bearish bias on EXPE, I am using 3 technical indicators in the chart below: RSI (Relative Strength Index): As a stock climbs up, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) gauges the strength of the trend. DMI (Directional Movement Index): When the DI+ (green line) is above DI- (red line), the stock is in an uptrend. The Trade Setup: A Bear Put Spread I am using a “bear put spread” as my trade structure here. Most trading platforms will offer a bear put spread (or long put spread) as a trade type and automatically construct the trade for you.

The financial sector, along with other value-oriented sectors, is beginning to significantly underperform the major equity benchmarks over the last six weeks. We'll share a potential short candidate, close to breaking down through a key support level that could indicate much further downside to come. First, let's visualize the relative performance of the financial sector, along with three other value sectors that have all shown deterioration since April. In searching through the financial sector for an actionable chart to play potential downside, I discovered that Progressive Corp. (PGR) is showing all the signs of a bearish rotation. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

Jerome Powell, Chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, speaks during the conference celebrating the Centennial of the Division of Research and Statistics, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington D.C., United States on November 08, 2023. None of those numbers are dramatically different from the April readings, and still show inflation running well above the Fed's 2% target. Central bankers prefer the Commerce Department's measure of personal consumption expenditures prices, a broader measure that also accounts for changes in consumer behavior. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is scheduled to release the CPI report at 8:30 a.m. The Fed meeting

Advertisement"Right now there's way too much confidence about the future trajectory of AI," Romer said. However, the economist argued there was not enough data available for the tech to keep progressing at the same pace. "It's just a lot of hype, the typical bubble hype where people are trying to cash in on the latest trend." Taken together, Romer and Kaltbaum see AI-linked stocks as hogging the market's gains — rightfully or not — and view the frenzy as a sign of problems ahead.

What do the charts say after this sudden 20% drop in price? After making a new all-time high of around $318 in early March, Salesforce demonstrated choppy, sideways price action into mid-April. A gap lower in price pushed CRM below its 50-day moving average, which often serves as an early warning sign of an impending trend change. From mid-April until this week, Salesforce has again settled into a sideways price range, this time between $268 and $290. While CRM was in a somewhat precarious position leading into this week, the gap lower post-earnings represented a sudden revaluation for this former technology leader.

We're using the closing prices here to make it easier to detect a "bullish momentum divergence," which is where prices are trending down, but price momentum is actually trending higher. This disagreement between price and momentum often occurs at market lows and can serve as an important indicator of a trend rotation. In August-September 2023, this bullish divergence led to a 20% rally into year-end 2023. Off the COVID low in 2020, we've seen fairly consistent support around $110, which was last tested in March 2023. But the real story from a technical perspective is that this week's move appears to complete a "big base breakout" pattern — a sign of potentially much greater gains in the coming months. This resistance level continued to hold, with subsequent peaks through the end of 2022 and into 2023 all hitting this same price point before rebounding lower. In March of this year, SQSP finally broke above this resistance level around $33.70, which then became a support level in late April. 'Big base breakout' The daily chart shows how often this $33-34 range was tested all through 2023 and into early 2024. One of the key features of a "big base breakout" is a frequent test of the upper end of the trading range.

Bank stocks have been in comeback mode since making a key low post the regional bank crisis in 2023. A new breakout could be on the horizon, according to the charts. Two of the most popular bank ETFs are the SPDR S & P Regional Banking ETF (KRE) and the SPDR S & P Bank ETF (KBE) . Both are lagging the S & P 500 in 2024, which is +8.2% YTD. The bottom line is that both KRE and KBE have been forming bullish patterns, and we could see breakout attempts soon.

Has the time arrived for the stock to break free from a range heading into earnings next week? There has been much hype around this emerging Swiss company that grew revenues by 68% in 2022, 46% in 2023, and are expected to grow revenues by more than 25% in 2024 and 2025. Technically speaking ,that range of overhead resistance for On Holding (ONON) is easy to see on the weekly chart below. There was weekly downtrend line resistance originating from the 2022 high that was broken in Q1 '24. On earnings ahead Heading into earnings, I think it's wise to refer back to Q4 of 2023 earnings announced on March 12.

Live Updates: The April Jobs Report

PinnedIt’s been a hot spring for the American labor market, and while the summer forecast is milder, it’s not clear when the cool-down will begin. The last three months have seen an upswing in job creation, bending what had been a bumpy but definite downtrend since the post-pandemic resurgence. Does that mean the labor market is taking off again without ever having touched down? Workers are quitting their jobs at even lower rates than they were in 2019. “You don’t have that cost of onboarding and starting over again if you can hold on to them.”

With bitcoin finally breaking below that support level at $60k this week, we see much further downside potential before the long-term uptrend resumes. You may also notice the breakdown below an ascending 50-day moving average during the second week in April. Going into May, bitcoin is making lower lows and lower highs, and now sits below a downward-sloping 50-day moving average. BTC.CM= 1Y mountain Bitcoin, 1-year Where could we expect potential support if the downtrend continues? The 200-day moving average is right around there, and big round numbers like $50k and $60k have often served as important thresholds for the cryptocurrency.

In an effort to navigate a market that remains highly concentrated under Big Tech's dominance, but also ripe for stock pickers, Barclays has dozens of stocks that share similar characteristics to the tech heavyweights. However, some select Big Tech remained fairly strong throughout the sell-off, with stocks like Alphabet and Apple bucking the downtrend. While Big Tech valuations still appear reasonable to Barclays analyst Venu Krishna, he pointed out that they're "not the only game in town," and suggested investors diversify their portfolios to beat their benchmarks. Yet, market returns, earnings upside, and institutional investor exposure remain highly concentrated in Big Tech," Krishna said in a Tuesday note. Aside from allowing investors to diversify, these stocks come with strong fundamentals based on profitability, balance sheet strength, cash conversion, and growth-adjusted valuation characteristics that closely resemble those of Big Tech stocks, the firm said.

The bitcoin sell-off could get worse before it gets better, according to analysts who look only at price charts. The downtrend intensified on Wednesday when it tumbled under the $60,000 level for the first time since February, as stubborn inflation and uncertainty around Federal Reserve interest rate policy kept markets under pressure. That was a key support level for bitcoin, representing the approximate convergence of the March low and 100-day moving average, according to Ari Wald, an analyst at Oppenheimer. Wolfe Research's Rob Ginsberg said $60,000 bitcoin looks "vulnerable" and that $50,000 could be in play. Bitcoin traded between $60,000 and $74,000 since mid-March, when the cryptocurrency reached new records and has failed multiple times to break out.

Since February, Meta Platforms has been trending slightly higher on weaker price momentum. Since early 2023, META has experienced a period of remarkably positive price momentum. META has been trending slightly higher since February, yet the RSI has been sloping downwards. Thursday's initial gap lower dropped META right into the middle of the price gap formed in early February. This would also mean a retest of the 200-day moving average, which META has not touched since February 2023.

While a market correction can be bad for a portfolio, CNBC Pro has some ideas for how to weather a downturn. The average analyst surveyed by LSEG also has a buy rating with an upside showing shares can rally about 18% in the next year. In addition to having a buy rating, the typical analyst polled by LSEG anticipates shares climbing nearly 21%. It also has the second-highest earnings per share growth rate at nearly 265%. But the average analyst has a buy rating on the stock with a price target suggesting shares can jump nearly 16%, per LSEG.

Economists polled by Dow Jones forecast GDP growth would come in at 2.4%. Tech tumbleThe lackluster GDP added further pressure to an already-tense market contending with concerns over a pullback in growth among technology earnings. "This report was the worst of both worlds: economic growth is slowing and inflationary pressures are persisting," wrote Chris Zaccarelli, investment chief at Independent Advisor Alliance. Health care shouldn't be overlooked as a place to buy amid the current market turmoil, according to Jamie Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group. He's been particularly interested in health care — pharma more specifically — as the industry feels tailwinds from artificial intelligence and the weight-loss drug boom. "The amount of money that the health care industry is making is being completely ignored by investors," Cox told CNBC Pro. "The noise of the short-term back-and-forth ... gives you good opportunity to buy high-quality companies, while people are just selling indiscriminately." For more diversified exposure, Cox recommended the Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) .
