Fani T. Willis, the district attorney of Fulton County, Ga., had no shortage of doubters when she brought an ambitious racketeering case in August against former president Donald J. Trump and 18 of his allies. It was too broad, they said, and too complicated, with so many defendants and multiple, crisscrossing plot lines for jurors to follow. But the power of Georgia’s racketeering statute in Ms. Willis’s hands has become apparent over the last six days. While Ms. Powell pleaded guilty only to misdemeanor charges, both Mr. Chesebro and Ms. Ellis accepted a felony charge as part of their plea agreements. A fourth defendant, a Georgia bail bondsman named Scott Hall, pleaded guilty last month to five misdemeanor charges.

How can someone that talented go more than four years without winning on the LPGA Tour? It's not about how many men Thompson beat over 36 holes. Golf is one of the few sports that allows for men and women playing together, and the PGA Tour is just now getting up to speed. Men and women compete for one prize (the women play from a shorter set of tees). There was chatter several years ago about combining the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua for winners from the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour.

Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton got questions about the same topic more often than he could remember this summer: The money, the money, the money. There are players with bigger salaries, even players with larger extensions — for example, Boston's Jaylen Brown signed one that could be worth $304 million this summer. But for players like Haliburton, Edwards, Ball and Bane, this is a new chapter. Haliburton, Edwards, Ball and Bane will average about that much in annual salary for the foreseeable future starting in the 2024-25 season. (Edwards will make about $13.5 million this season, Ball about $11 million, Haliburton about $6 million and Bane around $3.9 million.)

WASHINGTON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Bolstered by an infusion of new cash, Republican candidate Ron DeSantis’ presidential bid is diverting more resources to Iowa, including relocating key members of his team there, his campaign said on Wednesday. The moves reflect the crucial role Iowa, the state with the first Republican nominating contest on Jan. 15, plays for DeSantis. The Florida governor's campaign has essentially made it a win-or-bust state because he badly trails Republican frontrunner Donald Trump in opinion polls in Iowa and elsewhere. The DeSantis campaign on Wednesday reported raising $15 million during the third quarter, although not all of those funds will be available for use during the Republican primary. His campaign is planning to relocate about one-third of its staff, including aides who handle strategy and communications, to Iowa for the stretch run before the contest, the campaign said.

"We know that the British economy recovered faster from the pandemic than anyone previously thought and data out today once again proves the doubters wrong," finance minister Jeremy Hunt said. And that's before the full drag from higher interest rates has been felt," said Ruth Gregory, deputy chief UK economist at Capital Economics. The upward revisions were concentrated in 2020 and 2021, during the height of the pandemic and immediate aftermath. Growth in 2021 was revised to 8.7% from 7.6%, while the size of 2020's historic slump was reduced to 10.4% from 11.0%, in line with preliminary guidance on Sept. 1. Growth in 2022 was revised up to 4.3% from 4.1%.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesLONDON — The U.K.'s economic performance since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic has surpassed that of France and Germany, according to new data revisions published on Friday. A previous ONS estimate in August had suggested that U.K. GDP was still 0.2% below pre-pandemic levels, making it the slowest recovery among advanced economies. British Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt said in a statement Friday said the revised data "once again proves the doubters wrong." Still a 'flatlining economy' The U.K. economy has proven surprisingly resilient so far. "Unfortunately this snapshot of economic data is not significant enough to change the overall picture of a flatlining economy," said PwC economist Jake Finney.

SUZUKA, Japan, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Max Verstappen told Red Bull's doubters to 'go suck on an egg' after taking a dominant Japanese Grand Prix pole position a week after the team's record run of 15 wins in a row ended in Singapore. There had been some who suspected a recent technical directive on flexible bodywork had clipped Red Bull's wings in Singapore and possibly beyond, but Verstappen showed normal service had resumed. "I think they can go suck on an egg. "I think what we've witnessed today is something very special," team boss Christian Horner told Sky Sports television. Horner said Singapore was "a bit of an anomaly" and the team had learned a few lessons.

Sept 14 (Reuters) - Luton Town manager Rob Edwards said it was disrespectful to dismiss the club's chances of retaining their Premier League status after just three games, as he called on his side to embrace the challenge of proving their doubters wrong. Luton, who are back in the top flight after a 31-year absence, have lost all three of their league games this season, conceding nine goals and scoring twice. In a BBC column earlier this month, former Tottenham Hotspur striker and pundit Garth Crooks said he couldn't take Luton seriously, adding he was expecting to "see them down by Christmas". Asked about the comments, Edwards told reporters: "I think after three games it is disrespectful (to say we are certain to be relegated). "Every game is an opportunity for us to get points and we have to see it like that," Edwards added.

‘Gran Turismo’ Review: Once Upon a Pair of Sticks

Since the late 1990s, the Gran Turismo racing games for PlayStation have brought in billions of dollars, rivaling the box-office bounties of some movie franchises. It was only a matter of time before a movie offshoot arrived, following in the tracks of other live-action adaptations of PlayStation games, including last year’s “Uncharted.” “Gran Turismo” the movie tells the true (but unlikely) story of Jann Mardenborough, a Gran Turismo maven who became a professional racer of actual cars on actual tracks. Mardenborough’s leap from pixels to asphalt was an effective advertisement for Gran Turismo as more than a game, but his transition wasn’t all smooth. After Jann’s father (Djimon Hounsou) says there’s no future in gaming and brings Jann to his job at a rail yard, Jann goes off and wins a contest held by Nissan to recruit promising Gran Turismo players. Once again Jann exceeds expectations and beats out a more TV-ready competitor for the chance to race professionally.

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) defied the doubters with its late Friday quarterly results and strong guidance. In the nervous run-up to the earnings release, Palo Alto's stock had fallen about 16% in August. Cramer's Charitable Trust, the portfolio used by the CNBC Investing Club, owns shares of Palo Alto Networks. On Monday, he praised Palo Alto Networks' ability to gain market share in the increasingly important cybersecurity industry. The magnitude of Palo Alto's jump Monday is due, in part, to short-sellers covering their bets against the stock, Cramer said.

It Is Impossible to Break Your Phone Addiction Now

In many ways, we've so thoroughly integrated the devices into our lives, it's become impossible to break free. It's not just people's personal lives that are affected, but their work lives, too. To enter the store, customers need to download a separate app, connect it to their Amazon account, load a credit card, and swipe into the location. Instead, it lets customers register to scan their own items while they shop and pay from their phone. When internet connections aren't reliable, phone batteries run low, or you don't have a smartphone, these changes actually make everything much harder.

According to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s critical technology tracker, China appears to be lagging more in quantum computers — which perform many calculations in one pass, making them faster than today’s digital computers that perform each calculation separately — while narrowing the gap in quantum sensing for navigation, mapping and detection. Chinese scientists have even said they are building a quantum-based radar to find stealth aircraft with a small electromagnetic storm, though quantum specialists outside China have questioned their claims. He and his start-up, with offices in Sydney, Los Angeles, Berlin and Oxford, are among a cutting-edge group of global quantum leaders who see hyperbole and statecraft in many Chinese quantum announcements and hope to capitalize on what technology-sharing partnerships like the AUKUS security agreement represent. “AUKUS, for us, is exceptionally important,” said Professor Biercuk, noting that Q-CTRL works on sensors and quantum computing. The company’s main software product, which “stabilizes the hardware against everything that goes wrong in the field,” Professor Biercuk said, is already being used by quantum developers in the United States, Canada and Europe, where precise sensor technology is also advancing.
