Mandel Ngan | Afp | Getty ImagesThe U.S. and India are set to announce a slew of defense and technology collaborations on Thursday during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit, U.S. officials said. India has overtaken China as the world's most populous country and is set to become the third-largest economy in the coming years. According to Reuters, Modi has not addressed a single press conference in India since he became prime minister in 2014, making this an extremely rare occasion. India and the U.S. are expected to announce a deal to jointly produce F414 jet engines in India, involving General Electric and Hindustan Aeronautics. Thirdly, the so-called India-U.S. Defense Acceleration Ecosystem will aim to integrate India's growing private sector defense industry with the U.S. defense sector.

Menon has discretion over several institutional clients' portfolios including endowments, foundations, pensions, and healthcare institutions. Regardless of expectations, Menon emphasizes that it's hard to build a portfolio around any particular macroeconomic outcome. This means creating a portfolio that prioritizes offensive assets through equities while adding defensive securities, she noted. When it comes to defensive positions, the two most important things a portfolio needs protection against are inflation and deflation. "Private equity would fall more in the space of offense in terms of generating long-term growth in a portfolio," Menon said.
Foxconn struck a deal in November to take a near-20% stake in the money-losing U.S. firm for up to $170 million. It has since invested $52.7 million and is balking at purchasing additional shares, citing a breach of their agreement, Lordstown said. "There is substantial doubt regarding our ability to continue as a going concern," Lordstown said in a filing, referring to its dispute with Foxconn over the investment deal. Their course of conduct has resulted in material — and what is becoming irreparable — harm to the company," Lordstown said in a statement. Lordstown shares, which at one point tumbled more than 50% on Monday, closed down 23%, or 12 cents, at 40 cents, in heavy trading.
India's crude imports from Russia are expected to reach a record high in April as Asia's second-biggest oil buyer increasingly turns away from its traditional suppliers in the Middle East. As Russian oil was increasingly sanctioned and shunned by European buyers and some in Asia, such as Japan, the steep discounts on offer led to India's refiners buying increasing volumes. The Middle East's share of India's imports likely dropped to 39.8% in April, according to Refinitiv, down from the 12-month average of 56%. While the buying of Russian crude is fairly broad-based among India's refiners, the biggest buyer is Reliance Industries (RELI.NS), which operates a 1.24 million bpd refinery complex in Jamnagar. Kpler data shows that this complex is expected to receive 20.87 million barrels of Russian crude in April, or about 30% of the total volume of India's imports.

First Republic Bank plunged 30% on Thursday following a report that it was considering a sale. The bank has been roiled by the collapse of its regional banking peer, Silicon Valley Bank. Almost 70% of First Republic's deposits have no FDIC insurance and the bank has $4 billion in unrealized bond losses. First Republic Bank has many similarities to Silicon Valley Bank, including the fact that nearly 70% of First Republic Bank's deposit base doesn't have FDIC insurance. First Republic Bank is also sitting on $4 billion in unrealized losses on its held-to-maturity bond portfolio, which is what sparked the initial downfall for Silicon Valley Bank last week.

London/Abu Dhabi CNN —Dubai has scrapped a 30% tax on alcohol and will no longer charge tourists or expats for permits to buy alcoholic drinks as the emirate tries to attract more foreign workers and visitors in the face of growing regional competition. Two major retailers in the city, located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said they had slashed their prices to reflect the tax cut. MMI, one of Dubai’s biggest alcohol retailers and a subsidiary of the state-owned Emirates group, has 21 stores across the city, according to its website. Muslims are prohibited from acquiring licenses for purchase of alcohol in Dubai. The sale of alcohol in the UAE is already more liberalized compared to neighboring Gulf countries.

TOKYO, Dec 23 (Reuters) - A senior Japanese lawmaker said on Friday that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (2330.TW), the world's largest contract chip maker, is considering building a second plant in Japan in addition to an $8.6 billion dollar facility now under construction. "I believe TSMC is looking into further investments in Japan. TSMC said in an emailed statement that it did not rule out any possibility for Japan but there were no concrete plans at the moment. The Taiwanese company is building a chip plant in southern Japan, with Sony Group Corp (6758.T) and auto parts maker Denso Corp (6902.T) each taking a minority stake. "Technological innovation is fierce in the semiconductor industry," Seki said.
Goldman Sachs is expecting weaker growth in 2023 as interest rates stay elevated. Here's why the firm is optimistic about emerging markets and willing to invest in China. Instead, the investing chief at GSAM prefers emerging markets equities and debt in 2023. "It's had the trifecta of rising US rates, strong US dollar, and weaker growth," Shah said. Within emerging markets, Shah is most bullish on stocks in Asia, specifically India and China.
[1/2] Caucus goers wait in the corner for Democratic 2020 U.S. presidential candidate and former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden at their caucus site in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S., February 3, 2020. After Iowa, both Democrats and Republicans hold state primaries that narrow down presidential candidates even further. Their push to change the primary calendar picked up momentum after 2020 when the Democrats' Iowa caucuses were plagued by technical and communication issues that delayed the announcement of a winner. The state has traditionally held the first primary, right after Iowa's caucuses, but some Democrats would like more-diverse Nevada to get that spot. But New Hampshire state law requires its secretary of state to set the primary date seven days before any other, providing state officials a firewall against any efforts to boot them as the first primary state.
Three companies vie to build new Czech nuclear plant

The Czech Republic has been a strong backer of nuclear energy as a carbon-free power source for the future, unlike European Union neighbours Germany and Austria. CEZ plans to build three more nuclear units - on top of the one now planned - at its Dukovany and Temelin nuclear sites, as the country diversifies away from coal. It is also planning to build smaller modular nuclear power plants. Poland picked Westinghouse last month to build its first nuclear power plant, and also agreed to cooperate with South Korea on potential further units. In 2020, the cost of the project - not including financing and inflation - was estimated at 6 billion euros ($6.2 billion).
Matt McLennan and Kimball Brooker have guided their fund to a top 8% performance in the past decade. That's in sharp contrast to Matt McLennan and Kimball Brooker, co-managers of the $42 billion First Eagle Global Fund (SGENX). "What you'll find is that the amount of whatever it is that we're collecting never becomes large enough to do too much damage to the portfolio," Brooker told Insider. Those first two points are often prioritized by managers seeking quality stocks, but fewer fund managers target those latter two attributes. Fund managers should carefully consider a stock's long-term outlook instead of simply whether or not it diversifies and lowers the volatility of a portfolio.
Some may want to see the explosive, racist diatribes of a handful of prominent Los Angeles City Council members as an unfortunate incident that will eventually fade away. But the reality is that such prejudice from Latino to Latino and Latino to other racial groups is not so uncommon. That was on stark display in the conversation among former Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez, council members Kevin De León and Gil Cedillo and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera, who resigned Monday. "If you’re going to talk about Latino districts, what kind of districts are you trying to create?” she asks her colleagues in frustration. Zapotecs, or Indigenous people of Oaxacan descent, number about 200,000 in Los Angeles County, one of the largest Oaxacan communities outside Mexico.
Over half of Gen Z and millennials could enter retirement with insufficient savings, says a Boston University economist. As of 2017, roughly half of all retirement age Americans had no personal retirement savings, per a January Census Bureau report. While the expectation that young Americans will live longer than the generations before them is a positive development, this also raises the total cost of retirement. "The retirement age will rise and it's been rising," he said, pointing to BLS projections of older workers' labor force participation. To prepare for retirement, Kotlikoff says Gen Zers should be saving 15% of what they earn after taxes, although he adds that that "may well be on the low side."
Only 32% of older investors said the same. The wealthy millennials surveyed said they allocate 25% of their portfolios to stocks, compared to 55% for older investors. Cryptocurrency is popular among these millennials as well, accounting for 15% of their portfolios compared to only 2% for older investors. Wealthy millennials see cryptocurrency as the best investmentLooking forward, the wealthy millennial investors ranked cryptocurrency or digital assets, real estate, private equity, and direct investment into companies offer the "greatest opportunities for growth." Older investors favored US stocks, followed by real estate and equities in the emerging and international markets.
