WASHINGTON — After more than two years of demanding that the Justice Department appoint a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden, Republicans in Congress finally got their wish on Friday. "If Weiss negotiated the sweetheart deal that couldn't get approved, how can he be trusted as a Special Counsel?" Republicans argued that a special counsel probe would effectively draw a curtain around evidence they are seeking. "Now, Merrick Garland expects us to trust Weiss to be the Special Counsel that finally brings Hunter Biden to justice," said Leavitt. "The Biden Justice Department is trying to stonewall congressional oversight as we have presented evidence to the American people."

Washington CNN —The Trump-appointed US attorney who is investigating Hunter Biden has been given special counsel status after plea talks between the Justice Department and the president’s son fell apart. It’s the latest dramatic turn in the long-running criminal investigation of Hunter Biden that’s impacted President Joe Biden’s White House and has been a priority of congressional Republicans. The probe appeared to reach its conclusion when a plea deal was announced in June. The GOP had criticized the plea deal, accusing Weiss of giving Hunter Biden preferential treatment. Two career IRS agents who worked on the Hunter Biden probe went public as whistleblowers, claiming there was political meddling in the probe.

CNN —A sudden new twist in the investigation into Hunter Biden means his legal tribulations will likely stretch on for months, creating an unwelcome new drag on his father’s White House and reelection bid. Just weeks ago, the shadow of criminal suspicion over Hunter Biden seemed about to lift. The change of status followed the collapse of a deal last month that likely would have seen Hunter Biden get sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges. But the symbolic weight of an appointment of a special counsel stiffens the perception of scandal and potential wrongdoing even if the legal realities of the case haven’t shifted. Important differences between Hunter Biden and Trump casesThere are two important distinctions between Biden and Trump that the Republicans are trying to blur.

The jury ruled in favor of Emory Hernandez Valadez, who filed suit last year in California state court in Oakland against J&J, seeking monetary damages. The six-week trial was the first over talc that New Brunswick, New Jersey-based J&J has faced in almost two years. Hernandez will not be able to collect the judgment in the foreseeable future, thanks to a bankruptcy court order freezing most litigation over J&J's talc. Jurors heard from Hernandez's mother, Anna Camacho, who said she used large amounts of J&J's baby powder on her son when he was a baby and through childhood. Tens of thousands of plaintiffs have sued, alleging that J&J's baby powder and other talc products sometimes contained asbestos and caused ovarian cancer and mesothelioma.

National security law experts were struck by the breadth of evidence in the indictment which includes documents, photos, text messages, audio and witness statements. They said this made a strong case for prosecutors’ allegation that Trump illegally took the documents and then tried to cover it up. Trump has proclaimed his innocence and called the case a “witch hunt” orchestrated by political enemies. Cato's Neily said that based on his reading of the indictment, prosecutors likely have many witnesses who have given them similar accounts of Trump's efforts. Legal experts disagree over whether Trump could pardon himself if he wins.

A great deal of eeriness is due to the highly explosive Russian “petals.” “Petal” — or, “lepestok,” in Russian — is the poetic name of an internationally banned Russian-made anti-personnel landmine. The Russian wish for Ukraine appears to be death: to render Ukrainian land uninhabitable, to maim and kill those who live on it. But as one learns from Kataev’s tale, the Russian petals travel far and know no borders. In November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that 200,000 hectares (almost 50,000 acres) of Ukrainian land were contaminated with unexploded mines and shells. New York CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday denied a request by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office for a temporary restraining order to stop a House Judiciary Committee subpoena of former prosecutor Mark Pomerantz. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil said Pomerantz must appear for a deposition as the House panel investigates Bragg’s recent indictment of former President Donald Trump. Bragg’s office says it will appeal. During the hearing, an attorney for Bragg’s office argued – unsuccessfully – that Pomerantz ignored cautions from the DA before publishing the book, so the district attorney’s office should not be penalized. The clash between federal and state powers began in March when Jordan asked Bragg’s office for documents and communications after news organizations reported that Bragg’s office was moving closer to seeking to indict Trump.
Democrats believe former President Donald Trump, who was indicted on Tuesday for his alleged role in paying hush money to a porn actress ahead of the 2016 election, is a threat to democracy and shouldn’t return to the White House. Many of them also think he is the best possible opponent for President Biden in 2024. With protesters and news media assembled in the streets, Mr. Trump reported to a Manhattan courthouse, where he pleaded not guilty to 34 counts related to the hush money and the alleged coverup. On his way to the proceedings, he posted on his social-media site: “Seems so SURREAL—WOW, they are going to ARREST ME. Can’t believe this is happening in America.”
A New York judge will soon unseal criminal charges against Donald Trump related to a payment to a porn star. The alleged cover-up that followed the payment is likely to be as important for the future of the case. A Manhattan grand jury has indicted Mr. Trump after an investigation of the hush-money payment to adult-film star Stormy Daniels in the final stretch of his 2016 presidential campaign. Mr. Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen , paid Ms. Daniels $130,000 in October 2016 to keep her from going public with allegations of an alleged sexual encounter with the then-candidate.
Pope Francis has been criticized for not releasing the names of bishops and heads of religious orders investigated for abuse. ROME—The Vatican on Saturday published new legislation that extends to lay leaders of Catholic organizations the existing rules for investigating bishops over sex abuse or its coverup. The amended rules aim to fill a major gap in the Vatican’s effort to improve accountability over sex abuse, following revelations of abuse by lay leaders, but the changes are unlikely to quell criticisms that the procedure in place lacks transparency.
The notion that powerful forces control the world in part with the careful deployment of body doubles is a long-standing conspiracy theory. As a medical team worked on him, anti-vaccine activists flooded social media sites with unfounded claims that a vaccine was somehow to blame. Hamlin’s injury came during a surge in anti-vaccine misinformation that attributes any recent death, without evidence, to vaccines. Much of the misinformation came from a handful of serial misinformers, including longtime anti-vaccine activists, conspiracy theorists and podcasters. While still recovering, Hamlin has tweeted a photo of himself in front of a mural painted in his honor., seemingly winking at the conspiracy theory.
A screenshot that was made to look like a New York Post article says the Biden administration drafted legislation that would prohibit the filming or photographing of illegal immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. While the story was created as satire, some people online took it seriously. The image appears to show a New York Post article in its color scheme and format, but the publication’s title has been changed to “New Fork Post” with authors “Veterans Take Back” and “Political Goof” – indicating the image was likely created as a spoof. Reuters did not find any evidence that an article with this headline exists on the New York Post website (here) . An inauthentic New York Post article circulating online, which claims the Biden administration banned the recording of migrants at the southern border, has been taken seriously by some.
China’s Let-It-Rip Covid Reopening

China put the world in peril with its coverup and slow response to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 three years ago. The country’s current approach to Covid-19 is creating new risks—in China and beyond. Xi Jinping has made an abrupt about-face—swinging from total Covid suppression to population-wide immunity through viral spread. Chinese experts predict a Covid explosion, with hundreds of millions of cases. China will also become a petri dish for new variants, which will inevitably spread globally.
Deutsche Bank's scapegoating ruined the reputation and career of Connolly, a married father of two, and caused the "destruction of his life," the complaint said. Investigations worldwide into Libor manipulation resulted in about $9 billion of fines for banks, including $2.5 billion for Deutsche Bank in 2015. Connolly sued Deutsche Bank four weeks after a New York judge tossed a Libor-rigging indictment against former UBS (UBSG.S) and Citigroup (C.N) trader Tom Hayes and another trader. Hayes had already served more than five years in prison in Britain for rigging Libor. The case is Connolly v. Deutsche Bank AG, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No.
‘No coverup, no resistance from the bishops,’ Cardinal Matteo Zuppi of Bologna has pledged in regard to clerical sex abuse. ROME—Italy’s Catholic bishops released their first national study of sex abuse in the church on Thursday, a limited and belated move in the reckoning over abuse by comparison with church efforts in other countries including the U.S., Germany and France. The Italian report, based on allegations received by church counseling centers and other agencies, cited 89 victims of abuse by 68 church personnel reported in the years 2020 and 2021.
NEW YORK — Two New York hospitals have agreed to pay more than $165 million to 147 former patients who have accused a former gynecologist of sexual abuse and misconduct. Last year, the two hospitals reached a settlement to establish a $71 million compensation fund with 79 of Hadden’s former patients. He currently awaits trial on separate federal charges of sexually abusing dozens of young and unsuspecting female patients for over two decades. Among Hadden’s accusers was Evelyn Yang, the wife of the former presidential candidate and New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang. Kathy Hochul in May will offer an avenue for what she called “countless other Hadden survivors.” The act opened a one-year window for sexual abuse claims that would otherwise have been time-barred under law.
