The General Catalyst-backed startups Commure and Athelas are merging in a deal to bring more artificial-intelligence tech to hospitals and health systems. The new company, which is keeping the name Commure, plans to stack Athelas' software on top of Commure's data platform for health systems. General Catalyst is investing $70 million in the new firm at a $6 billion valuation, and Tanay Tandon, the founder and CEO of Athelas, will lead the combined company. Commure will consider companies making those tools in a range of categories, including credentialing, contracting, and patient engagement, he said. The company has about 100 open positions, Tandon said, and expects to hire hundreds more people in 2024.

It may have weighed twice as much as a blue whale because of its dense bones. That's nearly as heavy as a Boeing 747 or twice as much as a blue whale, which typically weighs between 72 and 180 tons. That means the other fossils retrieved from the area may not offer clues to how P. colossus lived. A 3D model shows what a complete skeleton of Perucetus colossus would look like, above a blue whale and smaller Cynthiacetus peruvianus skeletons. No limbs were found near the P. colossus skeleton, but fossilized evidence suggests it likely had both front and back legs.

Its skeletal mass alone was estimated at between 5 and 8 tons, at least twice that of the blue whale. The researchers suspect Perucetus lived like sirenians - not an active predator but an animal that fed near the bottom of shallow coastal waters. The researchers said it was unlikely Perucetus was a filter-feeder like today's baleen whales including the blue whale.

Legendary venture capital investor Marc Andreessen has used this week's Sun Valley conference to espouse the benefits of homeschooling. Musk and Zuckerberg have been been trading barbs online since Musk summoned Zuckerberg to a cage fight last month. Meanwhile, it's not the first time that Andreessen has called for more homeschooling. "It certainly feels like we're on the front end of a pretty dramatic homeschooling boom," Andreessen said.

I AM just crazy about Milan’s Pirelli Tower. The stylish but severe 1950s skyscraper, once headquarters of the Italian tire company, was the brainchild of Giovanni “Gio” Ponti (1891–1979), the colossus of 20th-century Milanese design. A polymath architect-designer whose output ranged from ocean liners to cutlery sets, Ponti went on to complement this high-modernist office building, still his best-known work, with a late, imaginative masterpiece—1970’s La Concattedrale Gran Madre di Dio, a church in Taranto, a remote harbor town in Puglia in the heel of Italy’s boot.

The bubble in China's property market finally popped. In April, China's economic data came in weak largely across the board. The problem is that while consumers may be picking up, the biggest drivers of the Chinese economy — property and exports — are going to stay dormant. Consumer consumption makes up about 37% of the Chinese economy (in the US that figure is about 70%). Beijing has tried to shift the country toward a consumption model, like the US, but exports still make up 20% of China's economy.
