Each member of the Barnes family is facing inner demons, too, which we learn about through alternating chapters dedicated to each character. In Dickie’s sections, we flash back to his past days as a Trinity College student and the secrets he kept while there, which feed into his present troubles — there’s a blackmailer threatening to destroy him. Sweet PJ is targeted by a bully who claims his mother has been ripped off by Dickie’s garage — and then he’s targeted by someone even worse. This all may sound bleak, but Murray’s writing is pure joy — propulsive, insightful and seeded with hilarious observations. Through the Barneses’ countless personal dramas, Murray explores humanity’s endless contradictions: How brutal and beautiful life is.

Paris 2024 Olympics - Training for test swimming event for Paris 2024 - River Seine, Paris, France - August 4, 2023 A tourist boat is pictured on the River Seine beside the Pont Alexandre III bridge REUTERS/Stephanie LecocqPARIS, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Participants of this weekend's Open Water Swimming World Cup were barred from a Friday morning training session in Paris' river Seine as heavy rainfall caused water quality to dip below health standards, the French Swimming Federation (FFN) said. The women's 10 kilometre race on Saturday - a qualifying event for marathon swimming at the Paris 2024 Olympics - is still scheduled to go ahead, pending a new river water quality test on Friday evening. "The water quality tests are done regularly, and they are progressively improving," the spokesperson added. International federation World Aquatics did not immediately respond to a request for comment about further backup plans for the races if Seine water quality does not improve this weekend. The city has been working on clean-up efforts to make the Seine swimmable again, as it was during the 1900 Paris Olympics more than a century ago.

Even harder to contend with is the fact that the food products most susceptible to contamination are often those we eat for their health benefits – produce items. “Produce led the list; about 46% of the foodborne illness that we saw in the US could be attributable to produce. But you bring up a really great point that the processing of packaged meats may actually protect the products from pathogens. I think water is going to emerge as a huge issue. I think we’ve got systems in place that do a good job of making sure that consumers are getting good products.

New York CNN —Soon, Americans are going to able to try chicken that comes directly from chicken cells rather than, well, a chicken. On Wednesday, the USDA gave Upside Foods and Good Meat the green light to start producing and selling their lab-grown, or cultivated, chicken products in the United States. In a nutshell, lab-grown meat — or cultivated or cell-based meat — is meat that is developed from animal cells and grown, with the help of nutrients like amino acids, in massive bioreactors. Meat eaters who are concerned about those types of risks might prefer cultivated meat. Eat Just Inc's Good Meat cultivated chicken.

PARIS, June 5 (Reuters) - On a sunny spring day, Dan Angelescu was testing the water quality of Paris' Seine river by the bridge Alexander III - a scenic view for next year's swimming marathon and triathlon Olympic trials. Angelescu has been working for the city since 2017 on its longtime project to make the Seine swimmable. The 2024 Games are a good opportunity to fast-track it in order to host some sporting events in the famous river - as was done at the first Paris Olympics of 1900. Stephane Vidalie, who lives in Neuilly-Plaisance in the east of Paris, was happy to no longer send wastewater into the Marne river, a tributary that joins the Seine just outside Paris. Bastien Coignon, a member of a kayak club in Sevres, west of Paris, said he had been waiting for this.

When the market collapsed, the "super pigs" escaped and have spread rapidly across the country. The environmentally destructive pigs may be invading the US, where feral pigs already pose problems in the South. Then the boar market peaked, collapsing in 2001, and many of the super pigs were simply let go. Others escaped, as the super pigs were stronger and more adept at getting under or over fencing. But the super pigs from Canada could easily survive the frigid winters of places like Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, or Minnesota.
Maiden Managing Director Naresh Kumar Goyal told Reuters he had "not done anything wrong" and did not respond to further questions. In December, India’s health regulator said it did its own tests and found no toxins in the syrups. Yet even as the doctors’ evidence of toxins mounted, Gambian government officials told Reuters they wanted more proof. “We took their histories and asked them if they took the drugs, and we just knew” that the syrup was the culprit. If tests for toxins had been done in late July or early August, a sales ban could have saved dozens of children, she said.
The expert called for a campaign to cut down the size of the feral pig population. These pigs are a cross between wild boars and domestic pigs, and were bred in Canada in the 1980s to diversify agriculture. The size and intelligence of the Canadian pigs has helped them survive the tough Canadian winters, and they can burrow tunnel ls into the snow, evading predators and freezing conditions, according to report. An expert told Fox News that the pigs can carry diseases transferable to humans, such as E. coli and hepatitis, and can devastate the environment. Brook called for a campaign to cut down the size of the Canadian pig population before they cause damage in the US.
Regan, who has spent the past year visiting communities struggling with water infrastructure crises — including in Alabama, Mississippi and West Virginia — acknowledged that the need is much greater. Engineers also had the forethought to build separate waste and drinking water infrastructure in Baltimore. Weather events routinely overwhelm the system, causing sinkholes that can lead to water main breaks and sewer backups in homes. Blue Water Baltimore filed a federal lawsuit against Baltimore in late 2021 over the issue. Two separate sinkholes, caused by the collapse of a stormwater tunnel and a leaking water main, led chlorination levels in the water system to drop.
Marijuana has been legal in New York State since March 2021, but there are still no licensed dispensaries in NYC. The first legal dispensary in New York State will be opened by an HIV/AIDS nonprofit in Manhattan on Dec. 29, Gov. In March 2021, cannabis was legalized for recreational use in New York state. Kathy Hochul said her goal was to open 20 legal dispensaries by the end of 2022, digital news platform The City reported. Prior to this announcement, how and where to legally obtain weed in New York City was a confusing matter.
Brian Niccol's New Year's resolution is to bump Chipotle's internal-promotion rate — the rate of how many current staffers fill open jobs — to 95%. Courtesy of ChipotleBoosting Chipotle's internal-promotion rate is part of a broader move to create career paths for all employees. Under Niccol's leadership, Chipotle has raised employees' wages and helped workers pursue a range of academic degrees, debt-free. In August, workers at a Chipotle store in Lansing, Michigan, formed the first union at the company, the Washington Post reported. But Niccol sees the employee proposition at Chipotle as simple: We're serving high-quality food and we're giving you a place to grow your career.
Marijuana's black market is undercutting legal businesses

Thriving, unregulated marijuana businesses across the United States are undercutting legal markets awaiting banking and tax reform. Unlicensed businesses are "taking a pretty hefty percent of the potential market share," according to Amanda Reiman, a researcher at cannabis intelligence company New Frontier Data. The problem is particularly cumbersome in New York City, Knowles said. Besides cease-and-desist letters, New York City has begun cracking down in other ways, too. "We will not let the economic opportunities that legal cannabis offers be taken for a ride by unlicensed establishments," the mayor said at a news conference.
A November survey tested 40 cannabis products from 20 unlicensed weed retailers in New York City. The study found harmful bacteria and pesticides in at least 16 of the products tested. Nearly 40% of the products failed at least one of the standard tests conducted on legal marijuana products, survey reports. A November survey conducted by the New York Medical Cannabis Industry Association tested 40 cannabis products from 20 unlicensed stores advertising marijuana. Consumers not only have to worry about the health concerns of potentially contaminated pot but also misleading packaging on THC products.
A fire broke out aboard the US Navy aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln on Tuesday. Nine sailors had "minor" injures, a Navy official told Insider, with six suffering from dehydration. It's the latest incident to plague the Lincoln, which reported polluted drinking water last month. The fire started Tuesday morning while the carrier was 30 miles off shore, but it was "quickly identified and extinguished" by the crew, according to a Navy statement. The injuries suffered by the sailors were classified as "minor injuries" in the Navy statement.
The US Navy found drinking water on an aircraft carrier was polluted with bacteria and bilge water. Videos shared with Insider by a USS Abraham Lincoln sailor show murky water bubbling out of drinking fountains and sinks on September 21-22. The sailor told Insider that the water smelled and tasted "horrible" and said "you can't escape it." One sailor told Insider "it was horrible" and that at times the water the crew used to drink, bathe, and cook appeared "black." The Lincoln is the second aircraft carrier to deal with water contamination within the last few weeks.
The US Navy found last month that the water on an aircraft carrier had an "odor and cloudy appearance." The service said early last week it didn't know why the water looked and smelled strange. Those tanks were immediately isolated and secured from the potable water system," Naval Air Forces Cmdr. A sailor on the ship — and their parents — told Insider that the issue was worse than what the Navy originally revealed to the public. Navy and Marine Corps veterans told Insider that sailors on Navy flattops, aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, have been drinking and bathing in water contaminated by jet fuel for decades.
The Navy discovered last month that the water on the USS Abraham Lincoln looked and smelled strange. Testing found E. coli in the water, but Navy officials said it was unrelated to the odor and cloudiness. Nearly a month later, the Navy still has no idea what caused issues with the ship's water. Sailors on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln first noticed on September 21 that the water they drink and bathe in had an "odor and cloudy appearance." The day after the unusual smell and appearance were detected, testing of the water supply revealed the presence of E. coli bacteria in a few of the ship's water tanks.
The US Navy said it recently found E. coli bacteria in the drinking water of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. Contaminated water on Navy ships is not unique to the Abraham Lincoln, which discovered its contaminated water shortly after another aircraft carrier did the same. "When you go to take a shower, it smells a lot like jet fuel. It tastes like jet fuel. It was terrible," recalled one veteran sailor who served on the Forrestal-class carrier USS Ranger in the 1980s.
A vegan falafel product sold at Aldi supermarkets in 38 states has been recalled after it was linked to 20 cases of E. coli — five of which resulted in hospitalizations. Cuisine Innovations Unlimited announced the voluntary recall of its Earth Grown Vegan Traditional Falafel and Garlic & Herb Falafel products in a release posted Friday afternoon on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's website. The type of E. coli suspected in the contamination, known as Shiga toxin-producing, primarily impacts elderly individuals, children, and people with weakened immune systems, according to the release. In a release on its website, Aldi said it had pulled the product from its shelves. Last year, Cuisine Innovations recalled a crabcake product after finding it contained undeclared egg yolks.
