Dollar weak as traders add to wagers of big rate cut from Fed
  + stars: | 2024-09-13 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
While the Fed is all but certain to cut rates next week, uncertainty around whether it will go with a 25 basis point cut or 50 basis points has kept investors on the edge and weighed on the dollar. Analysts pointed to media reports from the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal suggesting the Fed's decision would be a close call as one of the reasons for traders adding to wagers of a big rate cut next week. Higher U.S. jobless claims data released on Thursday and the Wall Street Journal article on the Fed's rate cut dilemma revived bets on a jumbo cut at the September meeting, according to Christopher Wong, currency strategist at OCBC. Besides the Fed, the Bank of England and Bank of Japan hold policy meetings next week. "Risks remain that inflation may not return to target as easily as everyone, including the Fed, seems to expect."

But there's another lesser-known S&P 500 index that you might not have heard of: the SPW. In contrast, the conventional S&P 500 allocates more weight to the biggest companies based on market capitalization. Big Tech names carry very little debt on their balance sheets, meaning that they are less affected by elevated interest rates. Bank of AmericaIn contrast, the cap-weight S&P 500 is approaching overvalued territory. Examples of SPW index funds include the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) and Goldman Sachs Equal Weight U.S. Large Cap Equity ETF (GSEW).

London CNN —The European Central Bank (ECB) cut interest rates Thursday, lowering borrowing costs for the second time in recent months as inflation slows and Europe’s economy stumbles. The ECB cut rates for the first time in five years in June, but kept them unchanged at its last meeting in July. However, it marginally downgraded the outlook for economic growth in the eurozone to 0.8%, from 0.9% projected in June. “Financing conditions remain restrictive, and economic activity is still subdued, reflecting weak private consumption and investment,” the ECB said. Earlier this week, former ECB chief Mario Draghi said in a report that slowing economic growth and productivity present an “existential challenge” to Europe.

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde addresses a press conference on the Eurozone's monetary policy, at the central bank's headquarters in Frankfurt am Main, western Germany, on July 18, 2024. LONDON — European stocks are expected to rally at the open Thursday as investors in the region await the latest monetary policy decision from the European Central Bank. New York CNN —It’s easy to dismiss many presidential candidates’ campaign promises as empty, because Congress would need to approve them. Alex Durante, an economist at the Tax Foundation, a right-leaning think tank, told CNN that 100% tariffs would threaten the economy. It’s possible he is floating 100% tariffs as just a threat designed to change the behavior of other countries. ‘No question it’s inflationary’The Trump campaign did not provide an explanation to CNN about how Trump would implement 100% tariffs nor what the trigger would be. He said Trump’s tariff plan, if enacted, would risk setting off a market panic like former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss did in 2022.

But while mortgage rates are one piece of the housing crisis puzzle, don't expect mortgage-rate relief to fix the locked-up housing market, according to Zillow's Chief Economist Skylar Olsen. In fact, she thinks falling mortgage rates could have a long-term effect of locking up the housing market even more. If more people are able to afford houses but existing owners aren't selling, then the housing market will remain frozen. As a result, mortgage rate relief might temporarily open up the housing market, but any relief is likely to be short-lived. Until then, don't bank on lower mortgage rates to unlock the housing market.

Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, at the ECB And Its Watchers conference in Frankfurt, Germany, on March 20, 2024. Traders are widely anticipating an interest rate cut at the Federal Reserve's Sept. 17-18 meeting, as well as at the ECB's meeting this week. "The rate cut this Thursday should be largely uncontroversial," Holger Schmieding, the chief economist at Berenberg Bank, told CNBC in an email to clients. In July, the ECB left interest rates unchanged in a unanimous vote following June's landmark cut. According to Bank of America, one area of the market is set to benefit from increased market volatility: quality stocks, or stocks with strong business models and financial fundamentals. And the cherry on top is that quality stocks — which typically become expensive during downturns — are still cheap despite their recent rally, coming out of a two-decade rut. As seen in the graph below, the high-quality factor serves as a hedge against elevated market volatility. Bank of AmericaQuality is still cheapLuckily for investors, this safe-haven area of the stock market is trading at an attractive valuation. Bank of AmericaWhile quality stocks have recently re-rated to a slight premium, they're still reasonably priced, according to Bank of America.

They found that registration for Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders increased by 43%, from 550,682 to 787,982 voters. However, things changed in 2020 when Asian Americans had a significant double-digit increase in presidential election turnout. Ramakrishnan pointed out that since the data set ended before Vice President Kamala Harris entered the race, it’s likely that the increase in Asian American voter registration is even more dramatic. “We’re seeing this more generally, regardless of race and ethnicity, but especially what I’ve seen is among younger voters, among female voters, voter registration has gone up significantly in the last month,” he said. “I would expect the Harris candidacy to also drive higher voter registration and higher voter interest among Asian Americans.”For more from NBC Asian America, sign up for our weekly newsletter.

Alibaba has completed a three-year regulatory "rectification" process following an antitrust fine it received on charges of monopolistic practices in 2021, China's market regulator said on Friday. In 2021, China's SAMR fined Alibaba 18.23 billion yuan ($2.6 billion) as part of an anti-monopoly investigation into the tech giant. Jefferies analysts said in a note Friday that the conclusion of the regulatory process was a "positive" for the company, which "highlights this is a new start and ensures compliance in operations." Ant Group itself also underwent a regulator-supervised rectification process, with most of the major issues resolved by last year. Regulatory concerns have been an overhang on the Alibaba stock, which has fallen more than 70% from its peak in 2020.

Greek organizations tend to be the domain of colleges, with students pledging and developing life-long connections in fraternities and sororities. But Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign is thrusting Black Greek organizations into the political sphere. She is the first presidential nominee to come from a Divine Nine Greek organization, so would be the first president from the Black Greek system if elected. That means Harris has ready access to the Divine Nine’s more than 2 million members — including activists, community leaders, philanthropists and more — and what could be a potentially powerful voting and mobilization bloc.
