Nearly 7,000 athletes from 206 delegations were ferried down the Seine today in an extravagant and star-studded opening ceremony to kick off the Olympic Games in Paris. And Celine Dion closed out the night with a triumphant return to the stage. Some competitions have already begun, but the Games move into full swing tomorrow with men’s basketball, tennis and women’s swimming (including the exciting 400-meter freestyle). “Gymnastics, swimming and track remain the heartbeat of the Games,” Andrew Das, our lead Olympics editor, told me. “Good stories there will make any Olympics more memorable.”

CNN —Lady Gaga was in top form in Paris, France on Friday, when she performed on the banks of the River Seine as part of the grand kickoff to the opening ceremony for the Olympic Summer Games. After proclaiming, “Bonsoir et bienvenue à Paris,” which translates to, “Good evening and welcome to Paris,” Gaga danced and traipsed down a staircase on the riverbank surrounded by her dancers with feathers. At one point, Gaga sat at the piano waiting for an interlude before continuing her performance on the stage. Gaga join performers Celine Dion and Aya Nakamura in performing at the ceremony. It’s the first time the opening ceremony has not been held in a stadium, and it’s truly putting much of Paris on display.

CNN —Celine Dion is set to make her return to the stage at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris. Dion will close the ceremony on Friday with a performance from the first stage of the Eiffel Tower, singing a timeless classic, Edith Piaf’s “L’Hymne à l’amour”. Dion, 56, announced in December 2022 that she was taking time off from professional commitments to focus on her health after revealing her diagnosis. Lady Gaga performs in Paris, France, ahead of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics on Friday. In her documentary, Dion said she was determined to make her return to performing.

For the first time in the history of the Summer Olympics, the opening ceremony took place outside of a stadium. Athletes paraded down the Seine River on boats, passing some of Paris’ most iconic landmarks. There were also big screens set up across the city to allow as many fans as possible to watch the event. The six-kilometer (roughly 3.7-mile) route ended in front of the famous Trocadéro, opposite the Eiffel Tower. The ceremony closed with Celine Dion singing Edith Piaf’s “Hymne À L’Amour" from the first level of the Eiffel Tower.

Opening Ceremony Misses the Boat

About six hours before Celine Dion gutted out the final number of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, the streaming service Peacock emailed a promo for its coverage with the headline, “We’ll all be crying by the end of this.” So maybe they knew more than they were letting on. The homestretch of the marathon four-hour broadcast, when the celebrating athletes and dance extravaganzas and speeches were out of the way, had some starkly lovely images and moving moments: the speedboat carrying former champions up the Seine in the dark (like a real-life echo of Leos Carax’s great water-skiing scene in “Les Amants du Pont-Neuf”). The grand scale and dramatic lighting of the Louvre as the torch was carried, like a firefly’s flame, through its courtyards. The torch coming to the hand of a 100-year-old French cyclist, steady in his wheelchair, and Dion defying her illness to belt out “Hymne à l’Amour” on the Eiffel Tower.

Paris, France CNN —Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on Thursday that weather could pose a problem to Friday’s Olympic Opening Ceremony if it rains, but she remains optimistic in an international exclusive with CNN. Hidalgo would not confirm rumors that superstars Celine Dion and Lady Gaga may perform at the ceremony. “It’s a surprise,” she said, hoping that the Olympic Opening Ceremony will boost the public’s enthusiasm about the Games. Hidalgo last week swam in the River Seine in an effort to demonstrate the cleanliness of the river for the Olympics amid E. coli bacteria concerns. The triathlon and open water swimming Olympic events are due to take place in the Seine.

CNN —Like its titular tornados, “Twisters” blasts through a lot in its 122-minute runtime. Generally, scientists are the least certain about the connection between tornadoes and climate change as it’s unclear how warming temperatures are changing storms themselves or the outbreaks. Cathy, a local farmer, gripes that storms and floods are becoming more frequent, and the price of wheat more expensive, while stopping short of citing climate change. However, for a film populated by scientists and clued-in citizens to not mention climate change is a little like the twisters themselves: there’s a hole at the center. !”“Making a ‘Twisters’ movie in Tornado Alley during storm season, tornado season, it’s kind of perfect.

Celine Gallois is more careful these days about what she puts in her shopping basket. The cost to fill up the gas tank of her small car jumped to €90 a week from €60. And Ms. Gallois’s electricity bills, which President Emmanuel Macron’s government had capped during an energy crisis last year, shot up again last month after the subsidy ended. All of this led her to cast a vote for Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally party for the first time during France’s parliamentary elections this weekend. “People are struggling, and there seems to be no relief in sight,” said Ms. Gallois, her frustration clear as she wandered through an artisanal market in the northern French city of Beauvais with her fiancé, but refrained from buying.

Left-wing and centrist parties in France are scrambling to block the rival National Rally from winning the ongoing parliamentary election, according to analysts, after support for the far-right faction surged in the first electoral round on Sunday. Figures posted on Monday morning by the French Interior Ministry showed that the far-right National Rally (RN) and its allies had secured a combined 33.1% of votes, while the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) alliance won 28% and French President Emmanual Macron's centrist Together bloc garnered 20%. The outcome of the first round of the election has led to discussions from left-wing and centrist politicians about how to minimize the amount of parliamentary seats secured by the RN in the second round of voting on July 7. "Our objective is clear: to prevent the National Rally from having an absolute majority in the second round, from dominating the National Assembly and from governing the country with the disastrous project that it has," French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, a Macron ally, wrote on social media platform X late on Sunday according to a CNBC translation. "I say it with the force that the moment demands to each of our voters: not a single vote must go to the National Rally," he added.

Some time over the past few decades, a strange thing happened: We started treating chefs as temperamental rock stars and restaurants as a barometer of cultural vitality. But with growing cultural importance came heightened scrutiny of the restaurant industry’s failings: poor pay, punishing hours, a toxic culture of macho aggression and brutality. Into this environment in 2022 came “The Bear,” a show that seemed both forged in the fire of the food world’s worst excesses and determined to seek a way out of the inferno. But the televised fantasy of a better, more moral restaurant culture — with better, more moral chefs — is part of what makes the show such intoxicating entertainment. Carmy exhibits both the worst and the best elements of the tortured chef-genius archetype.

Celine Dion Can Only Be Herself

“I always envy people who smoke and drink and party and don’t sleep,” Celine Dion tells her physical therapist with an exaggerated sigh, midway through the new documentary “I Am: Celine Dion.” “Me, I have water and I sleep 12 hours.”This monastic constraint has long been a core part of the Celine Dion legend. In a cruel twist of fate, though, even the ceaseless care Dion devoted to her voice could not preserve it. In 2022, she revealed in an emotional Instagram post that she has stiff person syndrome, a rare and incurable neurological disorder that causes painful muscle spasms and affects roughly one in a million people. After watching “I Am: Celine Dion,” a remarkably candid portrait directed by Irene Taylor on Amazon Prime Video, it is difficult to imagine a disease that would be more personally devastating to Dion, whose entire career has been one long exercise in control, sacrificing all for the ecstatic release of live performance. Since her emergence as a Québécois child star with a precociously huge voice, something about Dion’s essential nature has remained constant, impervious to both changing trends and scathing critique.

CNN —Céline Dion insisted that graphic footage of herself having a violent muscle spasm should stay in a new documentary about her life, the film’s director has said. In an interview with Variety, Irene Taylor, the director of “I Am: Céline Dion,” said the legendary singer insisted on keeping the “intensely revealing” moment in the final cut. Upon being shown the footage, “the very first thing she said was, ‘I think this film can help me,’” according to Taylor. Only minutes before, Dion had finished two days of recording for the first time in four years. Despite her discomfort and uncertainty about filming the incident, Taylor told Variety that she held on to her boom mic and kept filming.

In an Instagram post in December 2022, Dion tearfully revealed her diagnosis to her fans, but the documentary had already been in production by then. Taylor opens the film with relaxed scenes of Dion at her home in Las Vegas with her children and staff. Then the part that’s painful to watch: The singer is heard moaning as she has a seizure on the floor. Learning early on that she had always wanted to sing “all my life” intensifies the tragedy of watching Dion, now 56, struggle to continue to live that dream. Dion’s voice made her a star; this film is keen on making her a person.

Nearly two years ago, I huddled with some co-workers over a phone watching a video Celine Dion had shared on Instagram. “I miss you all so much.” This was Ms. Dion as we’d never seen her — fragile, tentative, worried — and all of us watching got a little emotional. This week, Ms. Dion will premiere “I Am: Celine Dion,” a documentary about her life since that diagnosis. Ms. Dion, 56, released her first album in 1981 at age 13, and she’s come to stand as one of the last pillars of a dwindling category: the pop divas. In the opera world, being labeled a diva can come with sexist overtones, a shorthand for a famous woman who makes unreasonable demands.

CNN —When it comes to Celine Dion’s ongoing treatment for stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological condition, the singer says she’s starting to feel like a new day is coming. Dion spoke at a screening of “I Am: Celine Dion” in New York that was also live streamed at an event in Los Angeles, which CNN attended. Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is “a rare, progressive syndrome that affects the nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord,” according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Dion announced in 2022 that she was diagnosed with the condition and that she was taking time off from professional commitments to focus on her health. “This movie is a love letter to each of you and I hope to see you all again very soon.”“I Am: Celine Dion” will be available to stream on Prime Video on June 25.
