CNN —Sunday’s announcement of the four teams selected for the College Football Playoff sent shockwaves through the sport. Instead of folding, Florida State rallied, coming from behind on the road to defeat Florida in Gainesville with backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker. With the selection, the Crimson Tide will make its eighth appearance in the College Football Playoff, the most of any team. Speaking on ESPN on Sunday, College Football Playoff committee chair Boo Corrigan explained why FSU was left out of the top four. It renders the season up to yesterday irrelevant and significantly damages the legitimacy of the College Football Playoff.

At the very end of another tiring duel with Zach Edey, the fifth-year guard was the last man standing — again. Buie scored seven of his 31 points in OT to help the Wildcats beat Edey and the top-ranked Boilermakers for the second straight season, winning 92-88 in the Big Ten opener for each school. Ty Berry also scored seven points in OT and finished with 21, and Ryan Langborg added 20. Edey had 35 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots, but Purdue (7-1, 0-1) had trouble with Northwestern's guards all night. Fletcher Loyer scored 17 points for Purdue, and Braden Smith had 12 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

Washington moved ahead of Florida State and into College Football Playoff position, coming in fourth in the rankings on Tuesday night. Now fifth-ranked Florida State stayed unbeaten, too, though the Seminoles lost quarterback Jordan Travis to a season-ending left leg injury. He was seriously injured in the first quarter against North Alabama, an FCS team, but Florida State went on win easily with backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker stepping in. “Didn’t shock anybody that was on our team because we’ve seen him do that before,” Florida State coach Mike Norvell said earlier this week about Rodemaker. “After the (conference) championship games we can look at who’s going to be available and who’s not going to be available," Corrigan said.

Make America Build Again
  + stars: | 2023-11-16 | by ( Adam Rogers | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +37 min
America is the sixth-most-expensive place in the world to build subways and trolleys. The solutions will cost trillions of dollars and require a pace of building unseen in America since World War II. Perhaps the single most pressing question we face today is: How do we make America build again? "For this class of projects, federal environmental laws are more the exception." The prospect of overhauling our hard-won environmental laws might feel like sacrilege to anyone who cares about the Earth.

CNN has contacted UEFA, the governing body of European football, and the Israeli Football Association for comment. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Former President George W. Bush threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 1 of the World Series to former Texas Rangers catcher Iván “Pudge” Rodriguez, bouncing the throw from the front of the mound. When he was president, Bush famously threw out the first pitch of the first World Series game in New York after 9/11 terrorist attacks, making that toss from the rubber without a bounce. “Well, this is Texas,” Jeter said Friday in a brief interview from the tunnel behind the Texas dugout on the first-base side. Rodriguez was still playing the last time the Rangers reached the World Series in 2010 and 2011. They paired up before Game 4 of the 2010 World Series in Arlington, Texas, and Game 5 in Houston in 2017.

For Lol Tolhurst, co-founder the influential “goth” band The Cure, it's all of the above. He explores what he calls “the last true alternative outsider subculture” in a new book titled, “Goth: A History,” published late last month by Hachette. From there, the book dives into gothic literature and the French existentialists, whom Tolhurst considers formative to the subculture. LA was also home to the psych rock band the Doors, who were the first group described as “gothic rock" — by critic John Stickney in 1967. Elsewhere, he draws connections between goth and Catholicism, a relationship Tolhurst believes goes beyond a shared iconography and morbidity.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sister Helen Prejean remembered when she first spoke with Jake Heggie about adapting her book “Dead Man Walking.”“I don’t know boo-scat about opera,” she told him. It’s established in a lot of these abolitionist countries that there is no death penalty — the government, we don’t kill people for their crimes. The Met and Carnegie Hall plan to present excerpts at Sing Sing on Sept. 28 with DiDonato, Sister Helen as the narrator and inmates as the chorus. There have been 1,575 executions in the U.S. since the Supreme Court allowed the death penalty to be reinstated in 1976, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Twenty-four states have death penalty laws, 23 do not and three have governor-imposed moratoriums, the center said.

Kasselakis replaces Alexis Tsipras, a firebrand leftist whose anti-austerity rhetoric rallied voters around Syriza during the debt crisis. Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the Zulu nationalist who positioned himself as Nelson Mandela’s most powerful Black rival in South Africa’s tortuous transformation from a white segregationist society to a multiracial democracy in the 1990s, died on Saturday. His death was announced in a statement by President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa. Proud, ambitious, descended from royalty and intolerant of criticism, Mr. Buthelezi was a hereditary chief of the Zulus, South Africa’s largest ethnic group. Like his battle-hardened ancestors, who had challenged colonial invaders in the 19th century, Mr. Buthelezi sometimes wore leopard skins and wielded assegai spears, but only in ritual war dances for political advantage. He was also the prime minister of KwaZulu, the homeland of six million Zulus, and the founder of the Inkatha Freedom Party, a Zulu political and cultural movement with 1.9 million members.

The former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, who short-circuited Marco Rubio in a 2016 debate, entered the race with the goal of hammering Mr. Trump over his attempts to overturn his loss in 2020. Initially, he went after Mr. Ramaswamy as the next best thing, saying that he “sounds like ChatGPT” and likening him to Barack Obama; Mr. Ramaswamy reminded Mr. Christie that the then-governor notoriously hugged Mr. Obama in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, just before the 2012 election. Around an hour in, Mr. Baier finally invoked Mr. Trump — “the elephant not in the room” — and his indictments, to the boos of the crowd. The hand raise began with Mr. Ramaswamy and moved across the stage like a sluggish wave at a stadium, stopping at Mr. Christie. But Mr. Trump was not there to make his own noise, which left more room for one of the main goals of a first debate: to let candidates introduce themselves to a broader audience.

Donald Trump's absence led to a night of barbs between the remaining GOP presidential hopefuls. The first presidential debate of this cycle was dominated by attacks on Vivek Ramaswamy.
