CNN —For most people, after winning the NBA Finals MVP trophy, you wouldn’t let it out of your sight. But Nikola Jokić is not most people, and the Denver Nuggets star seemed to have misplaced his award. After dominating in the Denver Nuggets’ 4-1 NBA Finals win over the Miami Heat, Jokić deservedly picked up the award given to the best player throughout the series. The Denver Nuggets' Championship Celebration gets underway Thursday. The Denver Nuggets’ championship celebration starts with a pre-rally at 11:00 a.m.

MIAMI—Describing the interplay between Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray presents the same challenge as stopping it: it’s built on a language all its own. “They know how to communicate with each other without even speaking, just reading and playing off of each other,” Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone said recently. “No matter how you guard that, there’s a counter to it.”

“He’s the biggest film nerd there is in the NBA,” Hanlen laughs. The ultimate scorerDespite his ‘Joel Troel’ alter-ego, Embiid’s approach to the game shows he is everything but a joker who fools around. Speaking after being named MVP, Embiid said: “I’d say the biggest key of it is, obviously, I’m all about family. Arthur is named after Embiid’s late brother who passed away shortly after the 2014 NBA Draft. But improbable doesn’t mean impossible.”Hanlen then summed up Embiid’s overall approach by saying: “I would just say he’s obsessed with greatness.

HOUSTON—Connecticut, Florida Atlantic, Miami and San Diego State will form one of the most unlikely Final Four fields ever when they convene here on Saturday in search of the NCAA men’s college basketball titleOne archetype of the tournament’s recent history will be glaringly absent, however: The star freshman who is passing through on the way to the NBA.
As last Sunday’s NCAA Elite Eight game between the Iowa and Louisville women’s basketball teams unfolded, the court at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena seemed to become a Broadway stage with an invisible spotlight tracking one player: the Hawkeyes’ Caitlin Clark. When the curtain fell, Clark not only finished with a jaw-dropping 41 points in Iowa’s 97-83 win. She added 12 assists and 10 rebounds to produce the first official 40-point triple-double in an NCAA tournament game. (Assists didn’t become an official stat until 1984.)
San Diego State Aztecs players celebrate after beating Creighton to advance to the Final Four. San Diego State, a No. 5 seed, on Sunday defeated sixth-seeded Creighton 57-56 in a thriller that came down to a string of controversial calls in the final moments. They join a Final Four that already includes a No. The winner of a Texas-Miami game in the Midwest regional final later on Sunday will join them at the Final Four in Houston next week.
Miami celebrates after their win against Texas in the Elite Eight. At this time last year, a collection of college basketball’s royalty—Duke, Kansas, North Carolina and Villanova—was preparing to gather for one of the highest-pedigreed Final Fours in men’s tournament history. This season, the glamor teams are out, replaced by a trio of lesser-known underdogs from beach communities—Miami, San Diego State and Florida Atlantic—plus the northerners from Connecticut, who are by far the most familiar basketball power in the pack. It is the first time since 2011 that none of the tournament’s No. 2 seeds reached the Final Four.
No one thought LeBron James would overtake Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the N.B.A.’s career scoring leader when he came to the league as an 18-year-old. In the next two weeks, barring injury or calamity, the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James will score the 89 remaining points he needs to break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time regular-season record. It is a testament to James’s versatility that not even those who know him best can guess how he will do so. He might stroke a 3-pointer; a few games ago, in a 46-point outburst against the crosstown Clippers, he made nine of them, his most in a single game. He might storm into the lane for a dunk; even though he recently turned 38 years old, he has rocked the rim 60 times this season.
Early in Wednesday night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Nikola Jokic caught a pass from his teammate, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Or, rather, Jokic touched the ball for a moment, hardly letting it come to rest before flipping it back again. A Minnesota defender had turned his head as Caldwell-Pope snuck to the rim; Jokic’s return-to-sender package met him there, and Caldwell-Pope laid it in. Alongside a retooled supporting cast, Jokic has averaged a career-high 9.9 assists per game. His distribution animates basketball’s second-best offense, an attack that has the Nuggets at the top of the Western Conference.
In one sense, what Donovan Mitchell accomplished Monday night was truly rare. The Cleveland Cavaliers guard scored 71 points in an overtime win over the Chicago Bulls, the most in one game since Kobe Bryant scored 81 in 2006 and tied for the eighth-most in NBA history. The list of players who scored 70 points in a game features just seven people, one of whom—Wilt Chamberlain, still basketball’s statistical colossus—did so six times. “We were treated tonight to one of the greatest performances in the history of the NBA,” Mitchell’s coach, J.B. Bickerstaff, said after the game.

The Financial Times reported that PSG’s Qatari owners wanted to offload 15% of the French champions. Recent deals valued the National Football League’s Denver Broncos and basketball’s Utah Jazz at over 9 times revenue, according to Forbes. Possible Man United, Liverpool and PSG owners might hope that the teams will eventually reach such valuation heights. Fenway Sports Group would consider new shareholders for Liverpool, having frequently received expressions of interest from third parties, the English Premier League club’s owners said on Nov. 7. The Financial Times reported on Nov. 28 that Paris Saint-Germain’s Qatari owners were considering selling 15% of the club.
Top Washington Post executives recently came to owner Jeff Bezos with a proposal. The company had spent the better part of a decade turning an in-house publishing tool into a broader software business, with some success. The Post’s software, known as Arc XP, now services the likes of pro basketball’s Golden State Warriors and energy company BP PLC. But the business, the executives said, had reached a crossroads and the Post needed to explore a spinoff or sale to realize its potential, according to people familiar with the discussions. Mr. Bezos gave his blessing to explore those options, they said.
Matt Ryan doesn’t remember the moment he was inducted into one of professional basketball’s most exclusive clubs. The last of them, a sideways-falling heave from the corner, forced overtime in what would become a much-needed L.A. win. But Ryan’s entrée into statistical immortality came in the second quarter, when he flipped a pass to LeBron James, who canned a 17-foot jumper. There have been 145 game-tying, at-the-horn shots in the past 20 NBA seasons, according to Stats Perform. Just 12 players, on the other hand, have recorded a single career assist to the man who will soon break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record.
Bill Walton’s Long, Strange Tale of N.B.A. Survival

Bill Walton arrived at the San Diego Natural History Museum carrying a large black chair. It’s so large that it made even Walton, one of basketball’s dominating giants, look small. We were standing inside the building, near the skeleton of a dinosaur (Allosaurus fragilis, the sign said), watching him approach. I had come to San Diego to speak with Walton about his life: the magic rainbows interweaving over the bottomless, flaming abyss. It suggests an existence largely shaped by dark matter — all the things that didn’t happen, that never coalesced, that went missing.
