LYON, France, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Uruguay savoured their victory over Namibia on Wednesday all the more as they were well aware the opportunity to add another World Cup success might not come any time soon. Uruguay has only had three wins in the World Cup, the fourth win was really important. "Now we are going to enjoy the week and then play the best team in the world (New Zealand on Oct. 5). We don't know if we will have a chance to play in the World Cup again." Uruguay coach Esteban Meneses said his team had prepared to make history.

5 Places to Bask in Spectacular Foliage This Fall

Heat domes, droughts, smoky skies, tropical deluges: After a record-breaking summer of extreme weather events, dare we dream of crisp nights, cozy sweaters and the colors of fall? “This summer really was a chaotic mix of record wettest and record driest, and fall colors will reflect that,” said Austin Rempel, director of forest restoration at American Forests, a nonprofit forestry organization. The Northeast and parts of the northern Rockies and Southern California had extremely wet summers, while the Southwest had one of its driest on record, he said. That stress can make trees lose their leaves earlier, but it can also make the leaf color “really pop,” said Tara L. Bal, a forestry professor at Michigan Tech. When leaves and trees are stressed, she explained, “the bright reds and oranges and yellows actually are stronger.”Just how vivid those leaves are depends on the right combination of cool and dry fall weather starting in mid-September, when colors start to change in the West and Northeast, and through late October, when they are at their prime in the Midwest and the Southeast.

With Melvin watching from the first base dugout in Oakland for the first time since May 2009, the Padres (78-70) delivered an 8-3 win in the opener of the three-game series on Friday. Melvin was back at the site of six A's trips to the postseason in his 11 seasons. "I loved it," said Melvin, who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area town of Atherton and attended the University of California. Padres starter Matt Waldron (0-3, 5.55 ERA) hopes to get the type of support on Saturday that Seth Lugo received in the Friday opener. The 25-year-old has allowed just one home run in 25 1/3 innings, none when he served as an opener in a 4-0 win at Houston on Monday.

Mrs. Ume-Ezeoke already had a delicate lace robe to wear while getting ready for her July 2022 wedding, but she sent it to her sister anyway. Mrs. Ume-Ezeoke, a senior associate at a health care tech company, had three wedding ceremonies to celebrate her and her husband’s different cultures — Nigerian, Korean and American. An ornate robe felt right for getting ready with her bridal party for the American wedding. “I wanted to have this one moment of collective feminine energy and to pop champagne and be sexy,” Mrs. Ume-Ezeoke said. Pinault’s Hollywood foray is untimely distraction

REUTERS/Charles Platiau Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Sept 8 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The story of European business trying to mingle with Hollywood has often led to unhappy endings. The Pinault family, which controls $61 billion luxury group Kering (PRTP.PA), thinks it can buck the trend. Pinault may have overpaid for CAA, especially in the middle of a major strike of Hollywood writers and actors. The transaction, through holding company Artemis, adds Hollywood's premiere talent agency to Pinault’s family empire which spans fashion, wine and contemporary art. CAA was valued at $1.1 billion when TPG acquired a majority stake in 2014, four years after having originally invested in the talent agency.

That was never more true than when Shelton trailed 2-4 in the third set, desperately trying to extend the match. He found himself with a point to break Djokovic’s serve and did not disappoint, drawing Djokovic into a wide forehand that generated a brain-rattling sound. There was still a little more Shelton and Djokovic for the packed stadium to enjoy. Shelton saved match point and sent the third set to a tiebreaker, then stuck around a bit when he went down, 5-1. But Djokovic had things to do and a rightful place in his 36th Grand Slam final.

With the Federal Reserve steadily raising interest rates to fight inflation, high-yield savings account payouts have steadily risen, too. After years of near-zero returns, the average savings account rate has risen to 0.43%, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Unlike some high-yield online savings accounts, you earn a high APY—currently 5%—on every dollar in your account. You can conduct immediate electronic transfers between your brokerage account and savings account, and manage both savings and investment activities on a single platform. How we pickedTo pick Buy Side from WSJ’s Best Savings Accounts, we looked for accounts that offered the best APY on deposited funds without restrictions.

U.S. President Joe Biden gives a fist bump salute to the audience during an event to celebrate the anniversary of his signing of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act legislation, in the East Room of the White House in Washington, August 16, 2023. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden celebrated the one year anniversary of the signing of the Inflation Reduction Act, arguing that the bill had done what it was intended to, namely, reduce inflation. "When the Inflation Reduction Act was passed a year ago today inflation was at 8.3%," Biden said at a White House event. Yet tying the drop in inflation to a bill that funded investments in green energy and healthcare subsidies is a tenuous case. Speaking at a fundraiser last week, Biden said he regretted naming it the Inflation Reduction Act, admitting "it has less to do with reducing inflation than it does to do with dealing with providing for alternatives that generate economic growth."

Good Luck, and Bad, on New York’s Sidewalks

Look down, and you may find yourself standing in a “good luck spot,” drawn in pastel pink or blue or yellow. Or maybe a “bad luck spot.” Or maybe many bad luck spots. “It’s like a practical joke,” Mr. Morelo, 51, said on a recent afternoon, his hands dusty with chalk. Some days, Mr. Morelo fills an entire stretch of sidewalk with bad luck anemones, leaving only a small path between them. Or he may draw one huge bad luck sinkhole, right where skateboarders gather.

The current exhibition, “Desert Flood,” co-curated by Jérôme Sans and Mr. Riestra and running through July 31, is a good example. Another gallery space features “We Are All in the Same Boat,” from the Danish art cooperative Superflex. Viewers walk all around the illuminated words, with many of them seizing the opportunity to bask in its moody lighting and snap selfies. It consists of a series of 35 neon sculptures, hung from the ceiling, and casting purplish-red hues on the walls, floor and ceiling. Spaces meld together as artworks flow up and down staircases, blend into the cafe area and push outward through the main lobby.

With inflation raising the cost of everything, I've been looking for creative ways to save money. Being more mindful of food waste is helping me save money at the grocery store. For the last two months, I've started to brainstorm ways that I can change my habits around the house in order to save $200, or more, every single month. In an effort to lower the bill as much as possible, I've started to get strategic about my habits around the house using advice from my local energy provider. When I switched most of my cleaning products away from well-known brands, my savings started to increase.

CNN —Even before the full-time whistle blew in Manchester City’s 4-0 mauling in the Champions League semifinal Wednesday, Real Madrid players looked to have accepted their fate. To see a club like Real Madrid get put to the sword is always a surprise, but it’s even more shocking when you consider it was this team – in this competition. Luka Modrić has been one of the best players in the world during his time at Real Madrid. In truth, the chastening defeat against Manchester City has only amplified what madridistas already knew. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti looked on as his side lost 4-0 on Wednesday.
Spending time in forests, hiking in mountains, and just being outside can lead to significant health benefits. Studies have shown that walking in the woods can improve blood pressure, boost mental health, and decrease cancer risk. Go spend some time "forest-bathing" to improve your health. Psychologists and health researchers are finding more and more science-backed reasons we should go outside and enjoy the natural world. But humans do need to spend time in natural environments if they want to improve their physical and mental health.

Gordon Liddy at Brown University, Hunter demanded that Betsy Berg, whom I now worked alongside at GTN, score him some crystal meth.

Morning Bid: EU inflation risks loom large for markets

March 2 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Wayne Cole. Asian markets had thought to bask in the glow from Wednesday's radiant PMI data from China, and the region in general. Markets are now leaning toward a peak of 5.50%-5.75%, compared with 5.0% just a month ago. That leaves a lot riding on what EU (HICP) inflation figures for February show later on Thursday. Median forecasts are for an annual figure of 8.2%, but risks are on the upside following the surprises from France, Spain and Germany.
