At least 1,017 out LGBTQ candidates ran for election this year, a 1.1% increase compared with 2020, according to the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, a political organization that tracks and supports LGBTQ candidates for elected office. The LGBTQ+ Victory Fund endorsed and tracked 477 of the LGBTQ candidates who made it to the general election. As of Friday afternoon, about three-quarters of those races had been called, with LGBTQ candidates having a success rate of approximately 80%. LGBTQ candidates won elections to at least 37 state legislatures this year, according to the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, and several were historic firsts. “Having LGBTQ+ candidates in the halls of power will be paramount in helping to protect and uphold pro-equality values,” Meloy said.

Bomb threats sent to polling places and ballot-counting locations in at least five battleground states across the U.S. Tuesday targeted mostly Democratic counties, an NBC News analysis has found. Of the 67 locations, 56 were in 11 counties that voted for Joe Biden in the 2020 election, including the eight most populated. Those high-population Democratic counties include voting locations for Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Detroit, Michigan; Phoenix, Arizona; Atlanta, Georgia; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Maricopa County, Arizona, which Biden won by a slim margin, has consistently been the subject of election denialism conspiracy theories. Some of the threats also included counties that voted heavily for Donald Trump in 2020, including the comparatively smaller Blair and Clearfield Counties in Pennsylvania.

Arizona voters approved a controversial ballot measure that will give state and local law enforcement greater authority to enforce immigration-related laws typically left to the federal government, NBC News projects. The lengthy ballot measure makes a number of changes to state law related to immigration. The measure also requires a court to kick out migrants convicted of illegal entry, allowing state and local law enforcement to deliver them to federal custody. While the ballot measure’s supporters have long argued for the need to make immigration law stricter, Republicans also hoped that the measure could help boost GOP turnout. And Arizona’s controversial attempt to enact stricter immigration laws in 2010 was partially blocked by the Supreme Court in part because the court found that federal immigration law pre-empted much of the legislation.

Vice President Harris is expected to call President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday to concede the 2024 presidential race and is also expected to speak publicly, according to two Harris aides. NBC News called the presidential race Wednesday morning, projecting that Trump won just after 5:30 a.m. Harris, 60, launched her presidential campaign after President Joe Biden, 81, withdrew from the race on July 21 and endorsed her as the Democratic Party's nominee. While Harris had about three months to campaign, Trump launched his re-election campaign, his third for president, shortly after the 2022 midterm elections that November. Polls had shown in recent weeks that the race was dead even and Harris faced a gender gap in which more men, specifically white men, were backing Trump.

But voters in Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota rejected proposed amendments that would have done the same — becoming the first pro-abortion-rights ballot measures to fail since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. The other amendment, that would have enshrined abortion rights until fetal viability in the conservative state’s constitution, was rejected. The defeats of the amendments in Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota ended what had been an unbroken winning streak for ballot measures backing abortion rights in the 2½ years since the fall of Roe.
