Follow live coverage of day 3 at the 2024 Paris OlympicsPARIS — Novak Djokovic dispatched Rafael Nadal 6-1, 6-4 in the second round of the 2024 Paris Olympic’s men’s singles at Roland Garros on Monday. AdvertisementDespite a stunning run of four games in the second set in which Nadal showed flashes of his old self — and exploited the scar tissue he has inflicted on Djokovic over the years — the Serbian recovered to see out the second set. In the Wimbledon final earlier this month, Djokovic had suffered at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz with the same shot. Nadal missed his forehand wide after it ticked the net, and Djokovic had the advantage he would never come close to giving up. Roland Garros, Paris CNN —There is a notable absence among Novak Djokovic’s 98 career singles titles, but the Serbian star is hoping to change that over the coming weeks. In the end, Djokovic progressed with ease, potentially setting up a thrilling second-round match against Rafael Nadal. It’s a feat, sometimes described as a career golden slam, only achieved by Steffi Graf and Serena Williams in the women’s game. “Playing in the Olympic Games is very rare for us tennis players,” Djokovic told reporters, ”and of course for anybody, as it comes every four years. The early stages of the match were particularly one-sided, with Djokovic taking the first set with back-to-back aces in just 24 minutes.

Roland Garros, Paris CNN —After all these years, Rafael Nadal is still finding new ways to win matches on his favorite tennis court. The victory against two seasoned doubles players was by no means easy, likely a sign of the limited time that Nadal and Alcaraz have spent training and playing together. But it was nonetheless an entertaining introduction to tennis’ new favorite double act. Another break of serve followed two games later, which Alcaraz had engineered with a cross-court backhand, before Nadal was able to serve out for the match. And who can blame him when he’s still winning on his favorite court, all to the applause of thousands of fans?

CNN —Portugal’s Nuno Borges played the match of his life to comfortably beat Rafael Nadal 6-3 6-2 in the final of the Swedish Open and claim the first ATP title of his career. Borges’ victory in his maiden ATP Tour final – against Nadal on clay, no less – lifts him to a career high of No. 161, was playing in his first final since the 2022 French Open, but two mammoth three-set victories in the previous two rounds had perhaps taken their toll on the 38-year-old. The 22-time grand slam champion is due to compete in the singles and doubles with defending French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz.

In defeating Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon men’s final in straight sets – a straightforward 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-4) victory against one of the sport’s greats – Alcaraz became the first Spaniard to successfully defend his Wimbledon crown, a feat not even Rafael Nadal had managed.
