The S & P 500 broke past 5,000 for the first time ever this week, but investors will see if the momentum can stick in the week ahead with more inflation data and earnings results on deck. On Friday, both the S & P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite were headed for their fifth straight week of gains, and their 14th winning week in 15. FactSet data shows S & P 500 earnings are tracking to have risen 2.8% in the fourth quarter, which would be a second straight quarter of earnings growth, and some expect that positive momentum will remain intact in the weeks ahead. A cooler-than-expected print has the potential to be greeted with enthusiasm, sending the S & P 500 even higher. The S & P 500 is up by 5% this year, with Nvidia higher by more than 40%.

This year could be a banner one for dividends, according to Bank of America Securities. For one, high dividend yield tends to lead in recoveries and global wave upturns, she wrote. Dividends also bridge a gap between "muddled macro signals" that impede a full cyclical/small cap recovery as the Federal Reserve pauses and/or cuts rates, Subramanian said. Atlanta Federal Reserve President Raphael Bostic said Thursday he expects policymakers to start cutting rates in the third quarter of 2024. "We expect more cash to revert to equity income as retirees reach for yield as cash yields ebb," Subramanian said.

It is one of several companies in North Carolina that are rapidly accelerating operations for extracting and processing lithium, which is essential to the flow of electricity within a battery, that can be sold to carmakers. Although there has been progress in expanding North Carolina’s lithium industry, obstacles abound when it comes to permits and the pace of approvals that producers need to move forward with their plans. Political backlash against electric vehicles, often fueled by Republicans including former President Donald J. Trump, also presents headwinds. And the prices for lithium hydroxide have fallen sharply this year amid waning global demand, adding to the financial pressure the companies are facing to make their investments pay off. Even if the permit process goes smoothly, however, the company does not expect the mine to be able to operate until 2027 or 2028.

SYDNEY, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Australasian pharmaceutical distributor EBOS Group (EBO.NZ) has shelved a A$3.75 billion ($2.4 billion) deal to buy Australian vet chain Greencross, sending its shares down 7% during early trade on Wednesday. EBOS was due to pay A$3.75 billion to acquire Greencross, and was set to raise about A$2 billion as early as Wednesday, said one of the sources who could not be named discussing confidential information. The capital raising and associated buyout was put on hold because of weaker than expected demand from EBOS investors, the second source said. TPG and Greencross did not immediately respond to a request for comment. U.S. private equity TPG bought Greencross in 2019 and delisted it from the ASX in a deal worth A$669 million.

These are some of the forecasts for 2024 from Goldman Sachs chief US equity strategist David Kostin and his team. But that doesn't mean it's time to expect a full-on bull market or rapid economic growth anytime soon. So, to leave room for alternative outcomes, Kostin envisioned an even more optimistic scenario that would see rate cuts and stronger economic growth. The second strategy is to not shy away from growth stocks, but rather, be discerning. Yet, their forecasted sales growth is below their 2023 numbers.
