The messaging app let users build a "personal AI" complete with a 3D avatar and an upbeat, down-for-anything texting style. "Seems like AI will replace many human artists," Jay told Calisto in August 2022. Within a year, he was also using AI technology for work, as his firm experimented with generative AI to help draft legal papers. Former Replika users fled to various upstart companion apps that were popping up, like Chai, Paradot, and Soulmate AI. Schwarzenegger told The New York Times Magazine there's still a "home" for him in today's GOP. But he was critical of the California Republican Party, which he said wasn't listening to citizens. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn 2003, Arnold Schwarzenegger did something that seems nearly impossible these days: He was elected governor of California as a Republican. But he was much less charitable about the California Republican Party, which has struggled to elect any statewide candidates in recent years. "In the state of California, the Republican Party has done a horrible job to represent the people," the former governor told the magazine.

Ladbrokes owner Entain warns on online gaming revenue
  + stars: | 2023-09-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Sept 25 (Reuters) - Ladbrokes owner Entain (ENT.L) warned on its online net gaming revenues for the third quarter and the full-year on Monday, as the British gambling firm grapples with ongoing regulation in the industry, particularly in the UK, and slower growth in Australia and Italy. The owner of online brands bwin and partypoker, said it expects third-quarter online net gaming revenue to be down by "high single digit percent" on a pro-forma basis. It also expects group online gaming revenue for the full year to be down "low single digit percent" on a pro-forma basis. Meanwhile, sports-betting service BetMGM, which Entain jointly owns with MGM Resorts (MGM.N) was on track to report positive core profit in the second half and full-year gaming revenues at the top end of its expectations, the British company said. Senior State Department officials spoke to CNN about what happened on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive details. The Iranians even threatened not to include all five of the Americans in the release unless the US did more, the officials told CNN. “We held our line and the Iranians backed down and we made it work,” a senior State Department official said. But the Qatari officials, in a smooth diplomatic maneuver, countered that they would be offended if everyone did not eat while on board the Qatari plane and an agonizing final delay was avoided. ET, the US plane carrying the seven Americans, Carstens, Paley and other US officials departed Doha en route to the US.

This is the shortest column I’ve ever written — because it doesn’t take long to get things in focus:President Biden, you are meeting Wednesday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, for the first time since he returned to office in December. I hope you won’t proceed without getting satisfactory answers from Netanyahu on three key questions — so we know just what Israel, and just which Bibi, we’re dealing with:1. Do you intend to annex the West Bank, or will you negotiate its future disposition with the Palestinians? Iran, meanwhile, moved in with a diplomatic offensive, patching up its ties with all your Arab neighbors and eating your lunch. Prime Minister, the Saudis are ready to do something hard — normalize relations with Israel.

RTX said on Monday it would have to pull 600 to 700 of its Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines from Airbus A320neo jets for quality inspections over the next three years. The engine issue was first disclosed in July, but RTX made the extent of the problem clearer on Monday. The announcement caused waves up and down the industry, from component manufacturers like Japan's Kawasaki Heavy Industries to airline carriers like Germany's Lufthansa that rely on the popular Airbus jets. In July, RTX said microscopic contaminants were found in a powdered metal used in high-pressure turbine discs that are part of the GTF engine's core. RTX is one of two manufacturers of engines for the popular narrowbody Airbus A320neo, the other being CFM International, a joint venture between GE (GE.N) and Safran (SAF.PA).

For them the flooding was ordained by God, a sign that they were vindicated in a running feud with the team. For many of these conservatives, the ultimate decision to host the Sisters earned the Dodgers a special place in hell. The next day, the Dodgers’ official X and Instagram accounts posted images of a dry and sunny scene at the ballpark. In the movies, L.A. is the place where everything goes wrong; at least the rest of the nation can take lessons from its failures. How, I wonder, does the new visual language of social media train us to understand the world?

CAPE TOWN, Sept 9 (Reuters) - The Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritania and Mozambique qualified for the next Africa Cup of Nations finals with wins on Saturday, but the games were overshadowed by the earthquake in Morocco that killed more than 1,000 people. The Gambia and Congo teams had to evacuate their hotel rooms when the quake hit on Friday and spent the night sleeping next to their respective hotel swimming pools. Mozambique booked their place earlier on Saturday with a last-gasp 3-2 home win over Benin in Maputo. On top of hosts Ivory Coast and Saturday's successful trio, the other finalists are Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, the Cape Verde Islands, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia and Zambia. Now, 55 years after that harrowing evening in Vietnam, Taylor received the Medal of Honor – the nation’s highest military award – from President Joe Biden at the White House on Tuesday for his heroism. Larry L. Taylor assumed command of one of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment's combat engineer companies in Nuremberg, West Germany. Within two minutes, Hill said, Taylor and his co-pilot had strapped in and taken off, heading towards Hill and his men. On his last try, he learned that any attempt to save the men had been called off, the rescue helicopter was not coming. “I think about 90% of flying a helicopter in Vietnam was making it up as you go along,” he said.

MILAN, Aug 24 (Reuters) - It's hard to be bullish about real estate in an environment of sharply higher interest rates. Two years of steep falls have made European property a short-seller favourite as sector valuations and investor positioning plunged to levels last seen during the 2008 global financial crisis. A gauge of European real estate shares (.SX86P) has halved in value to about $131 billion since 2021, but the mood shifted in July as earnings expectations improved. "Things aren't great for real estate companies and that's why they are trading at a huge discount. "Over 90 percent of the excess energy on earth due to climate change is found in warmer oceans, some of it in surface oceans and some at depth." Put simply, the greenhouse gases serve to trap more heat, some of which is absorbed by the ocean," Kirtman told CNBC. In addition to the daily record on July 31, the monthly sea surface temperature for July was the hottest July on record, "by far," Copernicus said. CopernicusThese record sea surface temperatures arise from multiple factors, including the El Niño weather pattern, which is currently in effect. "These climate variations occur when sea surface temperature patterns of warming and cooling self-reinforce by changing patterns of winds and precipitation that deepen the sea surface temperature changes."

Stingy UK bank saving rates may become a non-issue
  + stars: | 2023-08-10 | by ( Liam Proud | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
LONDON, Aug 10 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Banks are keeping the fruits of higher interest rates for themselves. Between January 2022 and May 2023, the Bank of England hiked rates by 4.25 percentage points. The nine largest UK banks boosted the interest on easy-access savings accounts by 1.18 percentage points, the FCA found. The upshot is that they’ll have to bid more aggressively for funding in the future, for example by raising interest rates on savings accounts. Second-quarter results suggest it too is paying more for funding: interest expense almost doubled between the second half of 2022 and the first half of 2023.

CNN —William Friedkin, director of iconic 1970s films including “The French Connection” and “The Exorcist,” has died, his wife Sherry Lansing, the former CEO of Paramount Pictures, told The Hollywood Reporter on Monday. Friedkin won the Oscar for best director for “French Connection” in 1972, going on to be nominated for the same trophy again two years later for occult horror “Exorcist,” the genre-defying hit that racked up ten nominations and two statuettes. Curiously, Friedkin once told Cinephilia Beyond that his original intention wasn’t even to make a horror film with “The Exorcist.”“I recognize that audiences for generations have considered it a horror film,” he observed. “I won’t deny that, but when I set out to make it, the writer and I never had any concept of it as a horror film. Many borrowers are dismayed after the Supreme Court struck down President Biden's student-debt relief plan. Anderson said she consistently made her loan payments, but it didn't make a dent in her balance. But in a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court, driven by its conservative majority, ruled that Biden's debt-relief plan was unconstitutional and required explicit approval by the US Congress. "Now that the Supreme Court has rejected the student loan forgiveness, I have no hope," she told The Post. But hours after the court's decision, Biden initiated a process for using the Higher Education Act of 1965 to cancel student loan debt.

LONDON, June 28 (Reuters) - Prince Harry was a "prime target" for the tabloid press and must have been a victim of phone-hacking, his lawyer told London's High Court on Wednesday as the trial in the British royal's lawsuit against a newspaper publisher nears its end. MGN, owned by Reach (RCH.L), is fighting the lawsuit and says there is no evidence for the accusations. The claimants' lawyer, David Sherborne, told the court on Wednesday that the case against MGN was "inferential", stressing that phone-hacking and other unlawful information gathering was a covert practice. But, he added, the court could find that Harry was a victim of phone-hacking because of the prevalence of the practice at MGN newspapers and the level of press interest in the prince. "The newspapers regarded him as a prime target, perhaps one of the most prime targets, in the sense of royal stories drive newspaper sales," Sherborne said.

Wagner's aborted rebellion in Russia over the weekend was a chaotic mess that ultimately failed. That's the question anybody following the chaotic attempt by the Wagner mercenary group to stage a rebellion in Russia last weekend probably asked themselves. Prigozhin bailed on his plan, sent everyone home, and headed off to some kind of retirement in Belarus. The soldiers wouldn't need to look far for a motive: widespread hatred for defense minister Sergei Shoigu and army chief of staff Valery Gerasimov.
