CNN —Huawei is in the midst of one of the most stunning comebacks in the history of the tech industry. The Chinese giant, which has been a flashpoint in the escalating rivalry between Washington and Beijing, says more than 900 million smartphones now use its in-house operating system Harmony OS. Harmony, which is called “Hongmeng” in Chinese, was first unveiled in 2019, months after Huawei was placed on a US trade blacklist that barred American firms from selling tech and software to the Chinese tech company without a license. The US ban prevented companies like Google (GOOGL) from supplying new Huawei devices with its version of Android OS. Sales of the iPhone began bouncing back in May, after the company aggressively cut prices in its largest overseas market.

Bank of America sees more room for Broadcom to run, with its sales growth likely to double as a result of the artificial intelligence craze. Analyst Vivek Arya hiked his price target by $150 to $2,150 while reiterating his buy rating and top-pick designation. Arya's new target implies that shares of the semiconductor stock can rally around 30% from last week's closing level. A key part of Arya's call is sales growth approximately doubling to a compound annual rate of around 13% between the 2024 and 2026 fiscal years. This will be propelled by a 24% compound annual growth rate in the AI-connected silicon and VMWare businesses, he said.

So far in the artificial intelligence hype cycle, software engineers are still operating at full force, with demand for skilled engineers expected to grow by 25% in the decade ending in 2032, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But is the hyper-growth of AI as an engineering solution throwing a wrench in that expectation? This is a form of computational thinking, or computer-like thinking — one skill that will remain prevalent amid AI-enabled software engineering, Schuerman said. Talented engineers, Tang said, have a higher level of problem-solving, logic and reasoning skills. David Hsu, CEO and founder of app development platform Retool, believes AI in the software context is a propelling factor.

Since briefly becoming the world's most valuable company last week, Nvidia has dropped for three consecutive trading days and is now down 13% from its peak. Nvidia's decline brought with it a slide in chipmakers and other tech companies that have been tied to the artificial intelligence boom. Super Micro Computer , which sells servers packed with Nvidia's AI chips, slid 8.7 percent, and Dell , which competes in that market, fell 5.2%. Last week, it topped Apple and Microsoft as the most valuable U.S. company with a market capitalization over $3 trillion before giving up some of those gains. Later this year, Nvidia will start shipping its next-generation AI chips, called Blackwell, that some analysts say could kick off another cycle with significant growth for the chipmaker and its partners.

The risk of an economic slowdown now outweighs the risk of inflation, according to Morgan Stanley. But Morgan Stanley worries that the poor breadth of the market , measuring the number of advancing stocks against those declining, is a sign that slowing economic growth is becoming a bigger risk than stubbornly high inflation. To be sure, the Morgan Stanley strategist does not expect weak breadth to herald weak returns. The S&P 500 alone has generated an average return of 7% during presidential election years since 1952, according to LPL Financial. If you limit that to election years in which the incumbent president is running for reelection, the average jumps to 12.2%. CNN —A group of major record labels is suing two AI startups, alleging they wrongfully used popular artists’ work to train their systems to produce copyrighted music without their consent. Udio is the company behind “BBL Drizzy,” the AI-generated song that went viral last month during the Kendrick Lamar and Drake spat. Udio was founded last year by former Google DeepMind researchers to make it “easy for anyone to create emotionally resonant music in an instant,” according to the company. The platform, which allows users to create songs with only a few prompts, relies on OpenAI’s ChatGPT for lyrics and title development. OpenAI has reversed its policies towards secondary share sales, and will now allow current and former employees to participate equally in annual tender offers, CNBC has learned. Service providers include employees and advisors, OpenAI said in the document, which was viewed by CNBC. Earlier documents indicated that, for former employees, secondary sales typically took place months after transactions for current staffers. In at least two tender offers, the limit for former employees was $2 million, compared to $10 million for current employees. In that case, "we will prioritize giving liquidity to current service providers over former service providers," resulting in a potential "cutback" for those no longer at the company, OpenAI said.
