The Rays Plan to Keep Calm and Carry On
  + stars: | 2023-08-02 | by ( Matt Martell | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The Tampa Bay Rays were the best team in Major League Baseball over the first three months of the season. With 16 losses in 24 games, it was their worst month since 2007, the year before they dropped the “Devil” from their moniker. During this monthlong about-face, they went from leading the American League East by 6.5 games to trailing the upstart Baltimore Orioles by a game and a half. The Rays understood they were never going to keep up the fast pace they carried through April, just as they recognized they would not continue to play as poorly as they did in July. The Rays had just withstood the nadir of their season, and they still had the third best record in the majors and held a four-game lead over the Houston Astros for the top spot in the A.L.

CNN —A cameraman who was hit by an errant throw in Wednesday’s New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles game is “conscious” and “undergoing tests” in the hospital, his network said in an update after the game. In the fifth inning, Orioles rookie shortstop Gunnar Henderson attempted to throw a ball to first base to get the Yankees’ Anthony Volpe out. However, Henderson’s throw flew over first baseman Ryan O’Hearn’s head and sailed into a camera positioned behind O’Hearn where it appeared to hit Pete Stendel, a cameraman for YES Network, on the head. I’m just thankful for the guys that rushed over there to him to help him.”After the game, YES Network provided an update on Stendel’s health saying he was “conscious” and “undergoing tests” at the hospital. Pepsi made its first-ever condiment

New York CNN —Typically, Pepsi is best with a hot dog… not on a hot dog. The beverage brand is making its first-ever condiment — called “Pepsi Colachup” — that is actually infused with Pepsi. Beginning with a Pepsi reduction, the sauce is infused with a variety of ingredients such as smoked tomatoes; a blend of spices including cinnamon, thyme, oregano and paprika; plus onions and ketchup. That results in a “sweet, citrusy taste” of a crisp-tasting Pepsi, created to bring out the spicy flavor notes of a hot dog, Danzi told CNN. The sauce is part of Pepsi’s two-year-old “Better with Pepsi” ad campaign, which ultimately hopes to chip away at Coca-Cola’s drink dominance.

It was a rather unremarkable Tuesday at Central Park West and Columbus Circle. A light breeze rustled the sycamore branches hanging over a bicycle rental kiosk filled with neat rows of mint green helmets. Then, at 4:41 p.m., a black Mercedes van crept through the jam of buses, police vehicles and flower-adorned bicycle cabs. He was on his way to Yankee Stadium to throw the ceremonial first pitch for Tuesday night’s game with Seattle. But before that, he wanted to try something he had never done: ride the New York City subway.

CNN —A string of sports games and practices have been postponed as smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to choke the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast parts of the United States. Around 75 million people are under air quality alerts as wildfire smoke shrouds major US cities, with Major League Baseball (MLB), the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) forced to postpone games due to concerns over dangerous air quality. Zack Wheeler of the Philadelphia Phillies warms up at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday. Following consultation with the NWSL Medical and Operations staff, it was determined that the match could not be safely conducted based on the projected air quality index,” the NWSL said in a statement. Smoke from Canada’s fires has periodically affected the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic for more than a week, raising concerns over the harms of persistent poor air quality.

Jessica Burstein, a photographer who in extended assignments captured three quintessentially New York institutions — the “Law & Order” television franchise, the new Yankee Stadium as it was being built and the restaurant and celebrity hangout Elaine’s — died on April 11 at her home in Manhattan. The cause was lung cancer, her sister Patricia Burstein said. In 1992, Ms. Burstein became the official photographer at Elaine’s, the night spot on the Upper East Side of Manhattan where writers, athletes, actors, politicians and filmmakers gathered in a salon overseen by the imperious owner, Elaine Kaufman. Ms. Burstein came as she pleased, with her only tangible reward the display of her framed pictures on a restaurant wall (Ms. Kaufman did not pay her). She also crafted striking tableside portraits of luminaries like Liza Minnelli and William Styron.

With the most recent version of Photoshop, the Quick Selection Tool streamlines the process for you, making separating your subject from the background simple. Pull up the image you'd like to remove the background from by clicking "File," and then "Open…" from the top menu. The Quick Selection tool isn't the only way to go about isolating subjects in Photoshop, but it is definitely one of the easier ways. Deselect "Layer 1," and select the "Background" layer, with your photo as the icon image, under "Layers." With that layer selected, you will now see the option "Remove Background" under the "Quick Actions" panel.

Baseball’s new postseason format has been rough on some of the regular season’s winningest teams. But the game’s biggest brand, the New York Yankees, on Tuesday survived their American League Division Series by beating the Cleveland Guardians 5-1 at Yankee Stadium. In only their fifth game in 13 days, an unusually airy schedule that reflected Major League Baseball’s expanded playoff format and two rainouts, the Yankees got an early three-run home run from Giancarlo Stanton, another home run from Aaron Judge and five innings from starting pitcher Nestor Cortes.
