New York CNN —Columbia University student organizers were given a midnight deadline Tuesday to resolve talks with the university over dismantling the pro-Palestinian encampment that has cast its campus into days of turmoil and unease, the school’s president said. Though the outcome of the negotiations is still unclear, Columbia President Minouche Shafik said the university would consider “alternative options” if no agreement was reached by midnight. As of 12:10 a.m., the NYPD had not been asked by Columbia University to respond to the campus, a police spokesperson told CNN. Harvard University has closed Harvard Yard and officials at the university suspended a pro-Palestinian student organization for allegedly violating school policies. The encampment at Columbia University was lively early this week, with many students congregating in circles, eating and talking.

The fallout from last week’s heated Congressional hearing and subsequent arrests at Columbia University continued to reverberate at several colleges and universities on Monday, as students erected tents and staged their own rallies and sit-ins. The demonstrations appeared largely focused on a few campuses in the Northeast, although at least some protests had spread to other parts of the country. At least 47 people were arrested during pro-Palestinian protests at Yale University in Connecticut, and a large crowd of students was occupying an intersection near campus on Monday afternoon.

Despite the warnings from police, many protesters refused to leave. “Safety is our highest priority as we strive to support our students’ learning and all the required academic operations,” Columbia University said in a statement Monday night.

The study also comes after years of political pressure on Novo Nordisk and other drugmakers to slash high costs of diabetes care, especially insulin. Ozempic can generally be produced for less than various forms of insulin, according to the study published in JAMA Network Open. CNN —Several New England universities and colleges have reached a pinnacle of at least $90,000 for undergraduate tuition and costs starting this fall. The nearly six-figure sums reflect the rising cost of higher education, far outstripping the average inflation for other goods and services. Schmeidel said very few Wellesley students pay the total fee, adding nearly 60% of its students receive financial aid and the average financial aid award is $67,469. Riley added 56% of domestic students received some form of aid for this academic year, with the average financial aid package being $67,000, for an average cost of attendance of $16,000. “Because this is an average, some of the students with greatest demonstrated financial need paid $0, and others paid more,” Riley said.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Astronomers have discovered what may be the brightest object in the universe, a quasar with a black hole at its heart growing so fast that it swallows the equivalent of a sun a day. The record-breaking quasar shines 500 trillion times brighter than our sun. The black hole powering this distant quasar is more than 17 billion times more immense than our sun, an Australian-led team reported Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy. The rotating disk around the quasar's black hole — the luminous swirling gas and other matter from gobbled-up stars — is like a cosmic hurricane. Further analysis shows the mass of the black hole to be 17 to 19 billion times that of our sun, according to the team.

☆ Yale apologizes for past ties to slavery

CNN —Yale University has issued a formal apology for its historical ties to slavery. The apology is part of Yale’s “ongoing work to understand its history and connections to slavery,” the university said in a news release Friday. Yale also announced the release of a book, “Yale and Slavery: A History,” by professor David W. Blight with the Yale and Slavery Research Project, and a range of actions and initiatives based on the project’s findings. “Confronting this history helps us to build a stronger community and realize our aspirations to create a better future,” Yale President Peter Salovey said in the release. In April 2022, Harvard dedicated $100 million to research and redress its “extensive entanglements with slavery,” President Lawrence Bacow said.

The pomp, the glamour, the conflicts, the characters: When it comes to Britain's royal family, Americans can't seem to get enough. That was evident this week following the announcement of King Charles III's treatment for cancer.
