Roivant attracted investors including Masayoshi Son's SoftBank Vision Fund, Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, and the hedge fund Viking Global Investors. Former Roivant employees said Ramaswamy worked hard and expected the same of others. McLaughlin called the employee's recollection "inaccurate," adding that Ramaswamy "has never once raised his voice or used bad language with employees." At Roivant, Ramaswamy kept his politics largely to himself, former employees said.

Opinion | Why Is Joe Biden So Unpopular?

The woke wars and Covid battles that disadvantaged Democrats are no longer central, and the post-Roe culture wars seem like friendlier terrain. Biden’s foreign policy team has defended Ukraine without (so far) a dangerous escalation with the Russians, and Biden has even delivered legislative bipartisanship, co-opting Trumpian promises about industrial policy along the way. The hope has to be that inflation continues to drift down, real wages rise consistently and in November 2024, Biden gets the economic credit he isn’t getting now. Across multiple polls, Biden seems to be losing support from minority voters, continuing a Trump-era trend. — much as culturally conservative white Democrats drifted slowly into the Republican coalition between the 1960s and the 2000s.

Sen. Tuberville called out "wokeness" in the Navy, saying people are reading "poems on aircraft carriers." But the art form has been a long been a part of military service, especially for sailors. Tuberville faces widespread criticism for blocking hundreds of promotions over the Pentagon's abortion policy. Tuberville's comments on poetry and "wokeness" in the Navy come seemingly out of nowhere — especially considering the art form has a long history for sailors. But could the debate over how schools teach history, race, gender and sexuality be coming to an end? This week on “Matter of Opinion,” the hosts look at signs that these wedge issues are no longer dividing us, ask whether we have reached “peak woke” and disagree on whether it’s even worth fighting about wokeness at all. Earlier this year, the Republican presidential primary looked as though it would be driven by conservative cultural battles, especially fights over education that had animated the party’s base since the pandemic. Even Donald J. Trump seemed to be trying to outflank Mr. DeSantis on education policies, promising to root out “Marxists” in the Education Department. But anti-wokeness has not played as large a role as expected in the Republican race so far. On the campaign trail, Mr. DeSantis has refocused his stump speech on the economy and border security while leaning less into culture-war issues. Former Vice President Mike Pence called in a speech this month to redistribute federal education spending to states — a traditional Republican goal dating from long before anti-woke crusades.

Mr. DeSantis is in the midst of rebooting a presidential campaign. On Saturday, Mr. DeSantis frequently slowed down the pace of a parade in Londonderry, N.H., by stopping to shake hands with onlookers and pose for selfies. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, a Republican who has clashed with Mr. Trump, said of Mr. DeSantis after the two governors met briefly at the parade. Recent years have brought numerous headlines about another liberal term that has been dismantled by the right. Some scientists believe climate change is a more accurate description of the environmental challenges facing the planet. Demonstrators march across the Brooklyn Bridge during a climate change protest in New York on March 3, 2023. Instead of acknowledging the science pointing toward a looming environmental disaster, one Republican pollster offered another phrase to mute the alarm: climate change. Two decades later, many liberal politicians and activists continue to use the phrase “climate change, the cognitive scientist George Lakoff noted.

Critics have pointed to drag shows and the use of critical race theory, both of which Milley said are overstated. Milley, the nation's highest-ranking military officer, said he supported Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's decision to ban drag shows at military bases after some Republican lawmakers sparked an outcry. Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Florida Republican, who criticized the drag shows, called the Pentagon's new policy a "HUGE VICTORY." Critics have also taken aim at critical race theory, an academic theory that looks at America's history of racism and discrimination through a modern lens. Already, three military services are without a Senate-confirmed leader, the first time that's happened in the nation's history.

When it comes to the Republican primaries, attacks on “wokeness” may be losing their punch. Ron DeSantis last year used the word five times in 19 seconds, substituting “woke” for Nazis as he cribbed from Winston Churchill’s famous vow to battle a threatened German invasion in 1940. Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor, speaks of a “woke self-loathing” that has swept the nation. Though conservative voters might be irked at modern liberalism, successive New York Times/Siena College polls of Republican voters nationally and then in Iowa found that candidates were unlikely to win votes by narrowly focusing on rooting out left-wing ideology in schools, media, culture and business. Instead, Republican voters are showing a “hand’s off” libertarian streak in economics, and a clear preference for messages about “law and order” in the nation’s cities and at its borders.

GOP voters aren't as concerned with wokeness as some GOP candidates might think, a new poll suggests. Some GOP presidential hopefuls built careers on anti-wokeness, but that's not the priority of most voters. If given a choice, most GOP voters polled by NYT and Sienna College chose a "law and order" candidate. Voters don't really care as much about tackling "woke" issues as Republican candidates may think, new polling suggests. The poll surveyed 1,329 registered voters nationwide, including an oversample of 818 registered Republican voters, according to the Times.

But it is tens of millions of voters who may deliver the ultimate verdict. For months now, as prosecutors pursued criminal charges against him in multiple jurisdictions, Mr. Trump has intertwined his legal defenses with his electoral arguments. He has called on Republicans to rally behind him to send a message to prosecutors. In effect, he is both running for president and trying to outrun the law enforcement officials seeking to convict him. That dynamic has transformed the stakes of this election in ways that may not always be clear.

GOP presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Likely Republican voters, however, told the New York Times they'd prefer the government stay away from limiting what corporations can support. Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign is in hot water after a majority of likely Republican voters said they want the government to stay away from influencing what corporations can and can't support. As he continues to double and triple-down on his anti-woke schtick, it doesn't seem like it's doing him many favors in the race to become the GOP presidential nominee. As he flails to reverse a polling decline that is beginning to resemble a rockslide, Gov. Ron DeSantis must be feeling a little clueless about why his political fortunes are crumbling so quickly. Attacking wokeness and bullying transgender people seemed to work so well in Florida, so why aren’t national Republicans in awe of the divisions he’s deepened? A Monmouth University poll published on Tuesday showed Mr. Trump with a 20-point lead over Mr. DeSantis in a head-to-head match, and the advantage grew to more than 30 points when all the other candidates were thrown in. Major donors have started to sour on him, and The Times reported on Thursday that they are disappointed with his performance and the management of his campaign, which he says he will somehow reboot.
